Is it possible that the carb has too-small jets in it?  Or the float level's too low, for some reason?

Update from vac gauge wars and thanks to all who contributed -

I got more vac at idle by adjusting idle mixture in accordance with carb makers instructions - that put me in the green on the guage.

Spraying car cleaner all over the inlet manifold made zilch difference.

Car still won't start easily without booting the slammer a lot, and runs rough when cold in spite of auto choke working OK, but runs better when warm.

Something is still not right - I have bought a cheap electric fuel pump on a tip from another thread - if that doesn't help I am going to put the spare engine in.

You call a breakdown company who send a flatbed to carry it away. I would take a wild guess that since its not a "breakdown" but owner error it wouldnt be covered for free by normal breakdown cover and likely cost a bit for the tow.

Renault and Nissan both include breakdown cover that covers this if you lease your battery / for the first few years if you don't

If you run out of fuel in diesel or petrol car,you just put a gallon in from a can & off you go.What happens with electric car????

With our leaf you call Nissan and they pick you up and take you to the most local charge station, this is free of charge. you can't tow electric cars as it fucks the motors up so flat bed.

Both entirely possible, however since it did a similar trick with the old carb, (and I had checked the float level in that) I am thinking not - which may be wrong-headed of me. Maybe I'll just try the carb off the spare engine first, before changing the whole thing :)

Surely towing should charge the battery, not fuck the motors?

Ben

indeed there is a story of someone who had the regen on whilst being towed home and was practically fully charged when reached home

It's not strictly true that running out of fuel in a diesel car just requires topping up from a jerry can and off you go, don't you need to bleed diesels?

As far as I'm aware you've got to lease the battery from Renault on their cars do you not? Remember reading somewhere about it.

Not all - the Zoe comes in an "i" version that includes the battery for ££££ more

Most modern diesels will self bleed via a lift pump, older ones can be a huge PITA

You can buy a leaf with the battery or lease it so I imagine Renault is the same as it's all financed through rci, which is renaults bank .

Missus Moog is taken by puma but only does autos. Thought I would ask

It was the Renault Fluence (battery powered booted Megane) I was thinking of, they only come with a Renault leased battery. 12 plates are now £3.5K, so paying the battery lease when the value plummets will likely see them all scrapped id imagine.

We can hope, the sooner such shit (not shite) is off the roads the better.

Is there a way of knowing if a car is likely to have cruise control? I've decided I really want it but it's kinda hard to pin down. Also having cruise & auto but not leather seems to be unusal as they tend to come together as the top whack spec ie; Ford Ghia X or Honda Executive.

What make, model, year and spec is said car?

Have we got a thread dedicated to HBOL wants/swaps/free/sales hidden anywhere? If not, would it be a good idea for me to start one?

Parents had a car to get rid of (Vectra, 51 plate I think; 1.8 Manuel). They found some website where, apparently, you put in details of the car and scrap merchants bid for it. Anyway, no offers, so they rang they local scrappy, agreed a price, and arranged for it to be collected.

On the day arranged, chap turns up in a tranny. 'I've come for the car' he says. Beavertail then turns up. Tranny man speaks to truck man, truck man leaves. Parents smell a rat, say they no longer want to get rid of it. Tranny man leaves. Truck man telephones, says tranny man told him car was already sold.

What's happening here? Is the first website a fiddle, on which no-one will ever bid, so they (yes, I suspect it's them) can get your details, turn up with cash, and avoid any sort of paper trail? (and all the attendant inconveniences of having to pay tax, be properly registered to dispose of vehicles etc)

Actually can kill the batteries. Which you don't want to be near in any way shape or form.

I hope they're electric powered flatbeds otherwise it rather pokes a brolly in the spokes of the whole green ethos.

Yes, every single part of all electric cars is made without using oil at all, including all the tyres, plastics and even the tarmac outside the factory.

"Can't tow electric cars because...." makes no sense.

How can the car know it is being towed and not just going down a  long steep hill?

I've got a problem. The c2 has peeling paint. On the rear arches it is peeling in flakes from the lip edge and showing bare metal. Should I be worried or even bothered? I think the car is galvanised but not sure and it won't have another owners so aesthetics aren't a major problem at all. Just don't want it to progress to serious galloping rot. Anyone else know of similar issues on cars?

Anyone an expert on getting broken bolts out?

Its not broken now but I've been told a bolt feels like it's going to snap (I don't know how as when I've done it in the past they just felt like any other bolt turning)canyway I know they can be drilled out but there's only about 4 inch to the bodywork so a full size drill won't fit.

How would I go about getting it out?

Can you get a blow torch flame on it? Plenty of WD40 type oil, soaked overnight, then plenty of heat, cool it with water to shrink, more WD, then gently try undoing the bolt, a little at a time, then more WD, you get the idea :-D
