The brake fluid reservoir cap on the Colt says to use Dot 3 fluid. I put the reg in on a few online supplier sites and they all say Dot 4 (and they do sell dot 3 fluid..).

Wiki says

Will the elastomers in my system accept the borate compounds, or should I just buy Dot 3?

Dot 4 is fine. It's the 'same but better'.

Dot5.1 is totally different, doesn't mix & ruins seals in systems not designed for it.

why does the fuel filter on my Audi have two inputs and two outputs ? (2004 Audi a3 diesel) I've only ever changed fuel filters on petrol engined cars that had a single input and output.

Hooli, you're confusing Dot 5 (silicone) with 5.1 which like 4 is glycol based. 5.1 will mix with 4

re: parts - for the Mondeo I'm usually taking the following route....

http://eucatparts.com/?action=cat_ford has a brilliant list of all Fords and exploded diagrams of most parts of the cars. From there you can usually get a Ford FINIS part number.

Then I tend to put the FINIS code in ebay.

There is a lot of new old stock about on there, and it is quite exciting (!) when you find something you need in its original box.

And that's on a 23 year old mass produced Ford. Must be a much better feeling on older/rarer cars!

Main dealers aren't interested in it

Don't tar all dealers with the same brush. My local, Koping Volvo in Dublin, is interested, but that's only because Dave the parts manager has a 400 series himself!

VAG diesels usually loop returned fuel back into the filter for fuel heating.

You're on your way to a booked test, officer.

£100 fine for driving without valid MOT iirc.

However doesn't it also mean your insurance is invalid?

I'll take it to bits and find out what is going on - I just assumed it was the filter, I don't really know much about these modern diesel things.

I'm guessing that is some sort of bleed screw in the middle ?

Just a filter on those . Vag diesels have a thermostatically controlled fuel return which returns to the filter instead of the tank under certain temp ranges

Thoughts on the safest way to lift an engine using a crane when there are no lifting eyes on the block?

Is it possible to tax a car without the renewal letter from the dvla or the v5? My lotus is sorned, I've mislaid the V5 and want to get it on DD just in case there is a summer this year.

Use old seat belt as a sling under the engine

I got a replacement door handle for my van from the scrapyard but I can't shift the lock barrel to swap it over, any ideas? I've already JFGI'd it and I think barrel should slide out. It's a Mk2 VW Caddy

Unfortunately not - you need either the V11 or V5 reference number

Crap, thanks for confirming.

I was also about 30 years younger than any other customers in the place.

That's always fun. I spent a good chunk of time in a Mazda/Suzuki/Kia dealership a few weeks ago. I was dressed pretty well but still NOBODY came up to me.

Here's what happened to me:

I was cruising around the m25, behind a police car. I pulled out and overtook, and shortly got blue lights and we pulled over.

The coppers said the car had no mot which surprised me. They did a roadside check of the car and found a bald tyre. They did the usual caution thing - I was unaware of this procedure and thought my car was going to get seized. I changed the tyre for a spare and explained not knowing mot was out etc.

I received two letters a couple of weeks later - one 100 quid fine for no mot and another for bald tyre.

I tried paying over the phone, but something went wrong, and it remains unpaid, This was 7 months ago and I haven't heard anything since.

Old seat belts wrapped around/underneath the engine.

Oops colc beat me to it.

I've been a thick idiot, I think I've fitted one of the wishbone bushes on my van the wrong way, I definitely didn't pay any attention to the arrow on it when I hammered it in.

It needs to be refitted the right way, doesn't it? The steering is still sloppy.

Probably yes, they are designed to allow movement in one plane but not the other so if it's say 90 degrees out it will be doing the opposite of what it's meant to.

If it's within a few degrees I personally wouldn't bother.

RE the door lock, it looks like it's held in by a clip thing, #26. Have you got the handle off the van to try and get the lock out?

Thanks for that. I'm trying to get the lock out of the scrapyard one before I tackle mine. I found it in the footwell of a SEAT Inca in the scrapyard, I think someone looked at it and decided it was buggered, that clip has already been removed and it doesn't come with the lock pin, spring, etc.

The lock on mine is okay, it's the handle that's buggered, so maybe I can make a good one out of both.

At least the handles are easy to remove, it's almost as if they knew that their door locks were made of chocolate...

You may need the key in it to withdraw it with even with the clip off.

Assuming that you didn't get the key with it, drills or violence may be your only option there.

Was driving my gf's modern Fiesta and every so often at motorway speeds there's a random "kerdonk" sound or 2, that's coming from underneath, either halfway along or near the rear that occurs every so often. Doesn't happen at lower speeds, and it seemingly only occurs when on flat unbroken surfaces, not on joints, bumps etc, and I never see anything that I could have hit either.

I picked up that it happened twice when I'd just overtaken someone at an indicated 70, and move across back into Lane 1 then take my foot off the accelerator a smidge. Would a modern Fuel injected car possibly be firing unburnt fuel into the exhaust where it's then combusting? Car tends to be warmed up when it happens, which kind of backs my hypothesis.

In every other sense the car seems to drive fine, certainly pulls a lot better than mine (though hers is 35k v mine at 117k miles)

I had something similar with my Punto when you were doing 70 and higher and decelerated there was a horrible 'brrr' noise for a couple of seconds. It didn't happen at lower speeds or over rough surfaces. I eventually traced it to the new exhaust I had fitted, one of the hangers was slightly too long and for some reason it vibrated against the under body when on the overrun at high speeds. I chopped a little bit off the hanger and it was perfect. The strangest thing is this didn't happen immediately after I had fitted the exhaust I think it took about a month before it started, which threw me finding the cause of it. It sounds like your exhaust could be doing the same thing and knocking against the under body.
