Question: a colleague/friend has a 2004 Nissan X-Trail that she has just treated to a new exhaust. The garage (independent) now tells her it needs a heat shield, £140 fitted.

Leaving aside the fact that this would have been much better to know before they’d nailed on the new exhaust, are they right or are they taking the piss?

I am not certain but I think there was something in the new mot regulations about heat shields now being in the mot. It is possible that it has fallen to bits when they have removed the exhaust. They can normally be bodged back on but it depends how bad it is. Knowing Nissan prices it is probably about right as it will be a dealer only part.

Another insurance question, I want to keep my Mondeo on full business cover (I commute to multiple locations, so having single location commuting cover is inadequate), but also really need to get an agreed value on it. Does such a policy exist?

Not that I can find unfortunately:(

I’ve checked and you’re right - missing exhaust heat shield is indeed now an MOT fail.

Thanks for the answers gents.

I have one of these DBpower jump packs.  It'll start my diesel Land Rover from a totally flat battery more than once on a charge, and is also useful for charging phones and so on.  I'm pleased with it.   I have heard less good things about the cheapo ones.

Me too, highly recommended. Good for charging computers etc or using as a flashlight as well.

Where the hell do I get a side pin fixing wiper blade, without it being a bloody modern shite aero one?

How long does it have to be? I think I've got one somewhere but its only about six inches.

Does anyone know where I can get new gaskets for my indicators?

Alternatively, does anyone have a recommendation for what material to use to remake them as I have no idea what the original ones are made of as they are so crispy and crumbly.

have a look on my website for closed cell foam, either Scapa 3507 or NSS

I can let you have a 'sample'

Ask Captain70s, I'm pretty sure he's fitted some recently on his Acclaim.

Loads of places. You might not get the pin though, but you'll get a blade with the hole(s) in it.

Last el-cheapo one I had from Tesco. I think even Wilko does 'em.

Yup Wilko non Aero's come with every connector imaginable

Do we still have the double entendre/innuendo thread?

re the heat sheild theyre often dog eared and the holes worn over size , anyone capable of a bit of thinking can usually re affix them with some oversize penny washers etc

What is Waze and why is it better than Google maps

Waze is free community app. Benefits are that it is updated by users so in theory should be better for traffic.

It is actually owned by Google now so I would imagine it is all shared.

Where possible I use those self drilling hex head screws. To be fair if you’ve removed a heat shield there is every chance the tester will miss it.

Not ideal when the heat shield screws into the plastic tank tho

No I’ll give you that. Ok for the shields over the cat etc. Just need to make sure it’s not screwing through something it shouldn’t. Those threaded washer things are hopeless after a few years on a salty road.

As I haven't owned a trailer myself for bloody ages - I'm unaware of the legalities for them now. Are they tested? Need a certificate or anything? I'm OK with insurance etc... but want to know if they need a gov check or anything.

Couldn't find clarification - specific - online.

Edit - I am aware of anything after 2012 - I was meaning earlier - old stock or converted ones………. sorry for forgetting that bit.

Wrap it in some asbestos WCPGW?

Morris Oxford Series VI would be my guess for the blue car beside the Atlantean (though I can't zoom in on my phone, so that's possibly wildly inaccurate).

Yup, deffo a series VI Farina Morris Oxford. The yellow spotlights are aftermarket, but rather fetching. And a Sunbeam Rapier.
