Yes hub off then can you find socket same size and bash it out then with uniform pressure applied to the socket and new bearing hit it back in? That is if you don’t have access to a press....?

Posted

All things considered I'd just remove the complete hub and take it to a friendly garage. It can be done without a press but it's no fun at all and you do risk buggering the new bearing with all the violence.

Id say you have more chance of shitting in the queens handbag than doing it that way

Did it this way before but put a piece of wood between the socket and hub so that I didn’t get it stuck half in or wedged half in and stuck. Plenty of grease and went in after a few whacks. Car was B5 Passat

The 406 is going through a stage of locking the central locking then unlocking it straight away.

It only has a key, no remote.

Been round and adjusted all the striker plates, tried manually locking all the doors but then still does it.

Any ideas of fix?

There’s a multi plug in the side of one of the foot wells that gets wet and causes all sorts of havoc with the locking.

You could also try if you have a vice that opens wide enough and slowly wind in with a piece of wood to apply the pressure evenly....

Part is ordered and I shall attempt on Monday, if I struggle then you will all be able to hear the swearing from wherever you are!

Failing that I will find out where the Queen is and her handbag!

Send the info to eBay and they should be ok, I say should as they have a habit of being aresholes but as long as you evidence it’s been posted you most likely will be ok.

Have a look on ebay, you can get stuff like TomTom Start 20s with lifetime europe maps for £30-40 refurbed.

You can't plan fancy routes as they only do one waypoint, but for A to B they are fine.

Any points for a budget satnav? I would only need it occasionally but would like something modern and updated.

Waze on your mobile? Free and traffic in real time - absolutely gold in London

Waze as mentioned above - best option really and helpful for police warnings and speed cameras.

Didn’t DW get hopelessly lost using Waze recently?

Better in cities.... My favourite was the little cut through from Embankment, down the side of the Savoy and out onto the Strand to cut through to Trafalgar Square and then down towards Buckingham Palace

Put tracking info into eBay. He can open a case but won't win.

Let them open a case, provide tracking info and proof of delivery, case closed in your favour.

Have you told him/ her it says delivered?

OSMAnd on an android phone or tablet, it's all for free and works well offline. Better than many paid-for ones ime.

Multiple intermediate points, car/bicycle/walking settings and a load of fine tuning within. But it works great, as is.

Bike setting has avoid hills/less hilly/don't care settings which can be useful.

Re the wheel bearing, unless you are Geoff Capes, bung the local garage a tenner or whatever to press it out and the new one in. Fannying about on the garage floor with old sockets and hammers is horse work. Bearings etc want gradual strong pressure to knock them out successfully. Unless you can exert 10 tonnes off the end of your elbow.

This is were allthread, nuts, washers and big sockets are your friends. Granted a garage is a way to do it but not much is beyond a home mechanic with a bit of ingenuity in terms of pullers/ press.

Sometimes it’s not worth wrenching your bollocks over the vice for a couple of beer tokens to someone with a press.

Posted

Never wrenched anything off doing it, just moving a spanner a bit. Key is having the right sized sockets and spacers.

do you have a smart phone ?

if so a vent bracket for your telephonic device and download waze ...

What I said above

It will, however if you lock the boot or glove box with the black Key then try to open it with the grey it wont do it, doesn't matter how old the car is or the spec it's just something Toyota do.

Toyota dont give out master keys like the red Honda Keys as far as I know.

Tailgate is a 'slam to lock' so key only turns clockwise to open. If you didn't want the valet/car park attendant to get in the boot, then surely it wouldn't have a remote mechanical release under the driver's seat? Glove box doesn't have a lock, so really, it's like having a 3rd key that does nothing special!

Posted

Don't a lot of cars like that have a 'turn to lock more' after shutting the boot so that the valet key doesn't work?

it might be something I've imagined over time though.

Not noticed it. All keys only turn one way, and it's turn to open or turn other way to snap key

Fair enough, must be my imagination then. I've not had a jap car for over decades.
