Can anyone identify the burnt out component on this circuit board? And what are the chances of replacing it for somone who can twist and solder wires reasonably competently.

Looks to me like you might have at least 3 dubious components, two of the capicitors on the left look like they have started to split their tops which means they are drying out also the components towards the back in the metal can...

See what you mean about the other capacitors. Its the control board for the oven, i replaced it but the replacement lasted about 20 minutes so will see what i can do with the original.

I thought that the dips always stayed on with the main? I don't recall ever seeing a car where they turn off.

I had a car that turned the front fog lights off when you used the main beam

My Jag won't allow fogs and main beam, you have to choose!

Can anybody recommend a firm who would fix/product to inject into a 5p-sized windscreen chip?

As I am running on veg, from the convenient Indian supermarket at 16 for 20litres.

That is a very good price for new oil. Is thst a chain, or a one-off shop?

DIY it with one of those kits on eBay.

Got glass cover on your insurance? Leave it til it cracks and then get a new screen - repairs are crap

Not got glass cover? eBay DIY job as said

172 phase 2 screens are blue tinted and I think take a while to order so I would rather try and save it.

I've used a cheap Laser windscreen repair kit with reasonable success before, didn't make the chips completely invisible but improved them and they didn't turn into cracks in the remaining year or so that I owned the car.

Laser is a brand name, no actual lasers are involved!

I think 5p sized is too big for the chains to do, an independant or a cash job might do it.

You should be able to get like for like on the insurance, if it's a blue screen coming out then a blue one should go back in.

I've been offered an 05 or 55 plate (can't remember which) Saab 9-3 1.8t Linear petrol convertible by a work colleague.

It's being offered at a very reasonable price. It's a bit scruffy here and there, but the roof works ok, and he uses it everyday for work, so there can't be too much wrong with it.

Other than that, I don't know too much about these. On certain models, I've heard about sludged up sumps and steering rack mountings rusting away from the bulkhead.

So, what problems does the above model suffer from, and what should I inspect closely?

Thanks in advance

Sludged up sumps and rusty/floppy bulkheads are problems with the previous generation, I think these are a bit better.

Where the hell can I get sensibly priced insurance for yon little Fiesta?  I have no no claims available (on two other cars) and want it insured but wil hardly ever use it. Cheapest I can find is a couple of hundred quid, I wanted classic for about half that!

Tried multicar with one of your existing policies?

Yes I did, the one the Merc is with don't do it and the other mob (Hastings) would rather shove wildly enraged wasps up my arse than be helpful!

Try Direct Line on their website (not on comparisons).

Lancaster? It's who I had my last two 'classics' insured with.

The timing chain guides break up and then the chains can jump a tooth or two.

Replacements are a upgraded design but not cheap...around £250 just for the parts alone from neo brothers as there’s two chains.

Not too bad to do though...on with one at the moment.

By the way, the 1.8t is actually a two litre but with a lower power map on the ecu.

Noobtune online can provide aero levels of performance for little cost.

Provided you use less than 2500 litres a year it is perfectly legal. Might fuck your car up though...

I've been using veg, when it's cheap enough, for a number of years and it's not fucked up my 1.9 Xud. I change the filter every year, which seems enough. I add 2 stroke to it which keeps seals good and so far no problems.

Indian supermarket, not a chain. It's been that price, more or less, for a year.

Quick driveshaft related query. The nearside driveshaft on the Mondeo has about 5mm of in/out movement. It also clacks when you accelerate on full lock. Obviously the CV joint is knackered. But how much in/out movement is acceptable?

Anybody know what a set of 17" alloys are worth in scrap? They're off an MX5 with no tyres.

About £8-10 last time I weighed any in.

Anyone got a recommendation for a decent set of metal drill bits? Got some broken bolts to drill out and am sick to death of polishing the ends and nothing more. Could do with 1.5/2mm as smallest size. Ta.
