Can you imagine trying to run an old car if we weren't allowed to work on them?

Ahh! I didn't realise that was you! Good to meet you!

No problem whatsoever if you know what you're doing. I suspect most people on here do know what they're doing. But when someone cannot identify if there's a problem or not with the brakes that surely rings alarm bells of whether its for the best that they pick up the spanners?

the public shouldn't be allowed to fuck around with cars when they don't know what they're doing...!

But the only way the government can divide people between the camps of 'competent mechanic' and fuckwit is by insisting people are trained to a certain standard.

I've been on one of those courses and the other students didn't give me much confidence in the future of Herefordshires garages.

Whereas there's loads of completely untrained people on here I'd happily trust to fix my car.

No don't get me wrong I do agree with you that it would be an impossible thing to enforce.

To be honest, with cars becoming more and more unrepairable without specialist tools/computers it's going to be passively reigned out of their control anyway in due time.

But what can be done is removing public access to salvage auctions. It's not right that an unqualified person can buy a structurally damaged vehicle from Copart, repair* it to their own untrained standard - cutting corners if they wish and then selling it to another member of the public. There's not even any sort of mandatory inspection or certification.

To get around the loophole of buying salvage outside of an auction, there should be some sort of professional certification before a new V5 is issued. Maybe certified by someone with an MOT tester license etc

A similar system works to keep Cat B vehicles under close control by only allowing licensed breakers to buy them so a similar system for qualified repairers should apply for Cat S vehicles.

My problem is that these people are allowed to freely purchase the vehicles, repair them incorrectly and for whatever reason feel the need to talk about things they don't understand and publish it on the internet trying to spur others on to do the same thing.

It's those sorts of outfits that make people feel hard done by they've paid £100 to have new brake pads fitted, they make it look easy and make out nothing ever goes wrong etc

Anyway, the point has gone a bit off topic for this thread, my fault I shouldn't have posted it in this thread to begin with anyway!

Laurel put back into use yesterday, should have done it earlier with all the decent weather we've been having but there was always other stuff going on. Did a great job of just being 'an car' getting me to work then off to a meeting, despite minimal prep. I'd topped-up the tyres several weeks ago and checked the oil before setting off from home.

Foolishly I forgot to check the rad. Had a bit of a moment when I got the the petrol station, when I walked back I saw a puddle of coolant directly underneath the engine bay. Popped the bonnet to start looking for a leak, then the chap came out and said not to worry, it was from the previous customer. Phew.....

Will try and use it again at some point, although this morning it's blocked-in by a certain Tuscan Plum Avensis SR so it'll have to wait until tomorrow for another trip out.

just been checking my pensions .. :-)

after spewing my job at easter as I had a basinfull of it ,  and the setup I left behind was going tits up thanks to the management .

this was more of a jump than a contolled exit thanks to the stress/shite that went on . 1 staff left behind out of a team of 3 and no takers on the recruitment , but the work load is going up ..... thankfully I am out of it and I feel a lot better , I cant believe how my body feels , stress plays funny games . just a body scan to go now .

despite a bit of a worrying wobble over the future I decided to get my arse into gear and do some checking   ... better late than never ( after jumping ! )

govt  , up to date , 40 odd years of qualifying , cannot be improved .....  claim it in 2019  .

private  . was avb at 55 , I gave extra time to it  , just need to tick box on quote , and put feet up .

look for work   .hhhhmmmmmm   , perhaps , if only to get out of the house ..and earn beer money !

I am going to save 800 notes next week by being availible to do some painting instead of working and paying someone else to do it  .

OAP pass already in use ..  car sat on drive .. sun is shining

About 18 months ago I got the Talbot recovered from where I had it welded up, and the bloke who did the job had my pants down big time - it was over £250 (cash!!) for 10 miles,  not a rush job or anything. More fool me for not asking for a quote etc etc. Yesterday he turned up with an ECU off his truck that he needs fixing....

Oh, how the turntables!

A little. But the correct repair is crappy roofing metal and pop rivets.

☑️rusted through wobbly danger machine

☑️Locate galvanised fencing bracket..

☑️ Grind to what’s left of metal, rust convert it, galvanised fence support bent and pop riveted,  paint the lot

☑️good* as new

☑️mow grass for another 10 yrs

Our baby is being born tomorrow— that’s a grin anyway, but not really Autoshite related.  😁

What is, however, is that the 480 is out of the garage and in daily use this week as the chariot of choice for hospital duties and bringing the baby home.

New baby boy came home in Dutch wedge style today. 7lbs 11oz. A good start to life I think!

I take it it came out the sunroof ?

You don’t get the pleasure of the 3 weeks checking your phone every 20secs , hot Currys and slightly awkward sex .

Anyone remember those Big Rig games at the Fun Fair or Amusement Arcades back in the 90's where you had a steering wheel and controls and you had to hitch up and take you load around course before unhitching again ?

My son has just aquired this old one and is going to uprate it with a modern motor and controller to use as a drink and food delivery wagon at a R.C track he helps run.

R.C drifting and banger racing seems to be a really big thing with the yoof at the moment.
