I was on a bus going into town to meet mates yesterday evening. Halfway along the route the driver informs us she can go no further and we can wait it out or get off. We were at a 4 way junction with traffic lights. I waited 5 mins and started walking. Multiple cop cars start arriving.

Somehow this idiot went into the back of a supermarket delivery lorry. Me thinks he was going a little faster than the 30 limit. One walking and talking wounded. One uninjured.

I had a 20 mins walk through the less salubrious parts of Nottm whilst my mates were sending me pictures of them and their pints. Gits!

I hope the prick driver had the book thrown at him.

After a "flying" visit to the UK, now back in The Netherlands and tomorrow heading back to Spain.

In the UK I wanted to visit the house where my dad was born and grew up in. I too grew up in the same house. The rather intrusive questions applying for ULEZ exemption put me off.So headed for Ely. I like the city. Harwich old town was nothing to write home about. However, very good fish and chips with this view on a sunny day was bliss.

Ely is nice isn't it and has some very nice places to eat down by the river.

MoT parts for the 205 have been ordered so I’m going to prepare that in the next week or so.

I wanted to re-do the bathroom floor this afternoon as I had the house to myself but sadly I was one piece of laminate flooring left over from our recent kitchen refit short. Annoying when there’s a 6” x 10” hole I cannot fill!

So I sorted my shed. I have another load of shite to take to the tip but once I have sorted all the bits and pieces on the workbench into their new cubbies I will have a functional workshop in there.

Hopefully this week I’ll get my plug sockets and cabling laid out in the garage ready for connection to the main consumer unit.

Back in the UK again. Most of today was pretty good and easy. I popped to near Chelmsford to pick up some OEM rubber floor mats for the S-Type.

20260322_130002.jpg.f72e49bc933c37336eb9df20eaba9a23.jpg

They need a clean but are in otherwise excellent condition.

I didn't take my usual way home from Dover which is usually south of M25 past Heathrow to junction 21 M40. Instead I went via the Dartford tunnel and got to the sellers place in good time.

The grump though was getting back into the Midlands, everything started going downhill, a camera van I hadn't spotted in time, then in Bromsgrove, a massive flying stone had decided to hit my windscreen and cause a tiny crack. That fucked me off big time, and then the fucking egotistical drivers, lazy twats and dawdlers.

I've spent a good week in Brussels driving in towns, cities and motorways and didn't get my car damaged once, even down south, nothing happened, but once I'm back the vicinity of FUCKING Bromsgrove 😡 my car, it would seem, needs to be vandalised. Last time it was on the M42 when dickhead lost control of his car, hit the barrier and sent a load of stones flying into the front of my S-Type.

Fuck Bromsgrove and fuck its vehicle damaging stones.

Then I get home, oh, need some bread, for dietary reasons, I prefer brown bread, not one bastard around here sells it, the only place that does is Sainsbury's who helpfully close at 4pm, when I'd just arrived home. Local Tescos don't stock it, so back in the car it was to go out and try and find somewhere who does. Had to pop back into town to find it. I'm in doors now. The outside world can fuck off.

The family Jimny has been out near Maidstone today doing a bit of off roading. Another lad was going to bring his Freelander but it shat its slave cylinder this morning.

The only casualty was loosing never to be seen again the front number plate in a bfo bomb hole.

What is the view of the AS massive - DRLs on the Rover 75, yea or nay?

They're dual colour bulbs which also do indicators:

Nay, from me

Wait, I'm going to sound a bit dumb here, but the DRLs go orange for indicators and white for front fog light potential?

If so, that's a yay from me.

Yep, they're quite clever.  When you put the indicator on the white LEDs switch off and the bulb flashes orange like a normal indicator.  Stop indicating and it goes back to white light.

They're okay but I think it would look better if you used the front fog lights. I'm sure there's some law about not using fog lights when it's not foggy but surely they're not as bright as DRLs anyway.

Our Up! shares a bulb for DRLs and sidelights. It just gets dimmer when you put the sidelights on. It's one of the things I like about it. There are LED lights on it, just easily accessible normal bulbs.

⚠️ ...SAD MAN ALERT...

As alluded to earlier, I bought myself a set of OEM rubber mats for the S-Type. They were looking a little tired. Rubber mats generally do after years of weather/dirt etc... They start to go a bit white in places. Well, this is where the magic of black shoe polish comes in.

Before:

During:

After:

20260323_153510.jpg.d18562418636360d3e704d4f115bc6c9.jpg

Comparison to when I got it yesterday:

20260322_130002.jpg.f72e49bc933c37336eb9df20eaba9a23.jpg

Looks a lot better.

Left one done, right one not done:

20260323_154211.jpg.49c9f0b9380f0a7ea7e7043fef6689f7.jpg

It makes the car feel cleaner and nicer and is generally a good way to make mats look better.

Also, shoe polish is good for sidewall tyres if you don't want that tyre shine look.

I like them, clever stuff those switch back indicators/DRL's.

I always think they make you more visible during the day, which has to be a positive.

Gave the couriering Caddy a good scrub earlier, it was embarrassingly minging inside and out.

I noticed I'd worn the hard plastic door card top smooth.

Shoe polish makes a brilliant tyre dressing - a certain Mr Munro of Invercargill would testify to that !

I'd managed a dent in my Qashqai in a similar spot after about 15-20k - I'm seeing one starting to form on the X-Trail!

Yup. Dad taught me that, late 1960's. Still have the wooden box he made to store brushes, polish, and velvet buffing pads. (Ex Navy)

Nothing quite as therapeutic as bulling ones' boots?
I still relapse now and then and chuck some parade gloss on the funeral & wedding shoes. Everything else just gets neglected....

p.s. also good for a sun bleached, black PVC front door and Bini wheel arch plastics

Looks like PUF the crappy Audi has had a weekend face-lift from someone who cares about duct tape application.

Just hope they don't drive at night much.

I was in the public loos. One bloke said to his mate. This place is very 60s, with its free parking  and free toilets.. The wife and I was greeted* near the Cathedral by a woman who warn us the place is not what it seemed, She had been accosted several times. Nutters everywhere.

Now home in Spain.

Total of 6848  km in three weeks we are home. Bought petrol in the Uk and shipped it into the EU. It is cheaper than The Netherlands (@2.40€/L) Belgium and France (1.99/L) So a tour of Rotterdam area and a trip homeward managed to get south of Rouen before filling again.

The Spanish government has cut VAT on fuel to help with the fuel crisis. Paid just  1,49/L

I have spent an awful lot of time in Ely.  One to three days a week for five years.  In fact, this is from the top of the tower as the radio station I used to work for has a transmitter on top

People love to knock places but it's lovely.  People are nice.  Scenery is lovely.  History is fascinating.

25 years ago it was a lot weirder with inbred fuckhead fen folk everywhere but fortunately the gentrification (and inflation of house prices in Cambridge) keeps them largely out of the city itself these days.  Stay out of Littleport and the like and you'd be very unlucky to have any issue whatsoever.

Yep - you'll find the odd fruitcake.  Drugs are bad things eh?  But I'd stand up for Ely time and time again.

Goodbye, for now. Off to Duncan the Rover guy for some final work to get it road legal again. I just dont have the time at the moment to get it all done and to be quite honest, apart from the subframe, each and every MOT fail was due to me concentrating on getting the bodywork sorted and not attending to little things. All easily sorted and hopefully back home soon.

Last car ride my Dad ever took was in this (although he was very ill) and it now wears his plate, so it must live on.

Forgot to post about it but the Evoque got a full service. It’s in such good condition, previous owner lavished it as she had it for 9 years and was its second owner. Lots of specialist history and it’s got a matching set of Pirelli Scorpions all round..says it all really. Thanks to me buying a flex head ratchet spanner the oil change is easier.

I’m booked in at Bell Engineering next week for a Haldex service and rear diff oil change too.
