I did wonder if you still had the Carina E. Best colour ever.

1996/97 Toyota Carina E 1.8 GLi liftback

Heh, that must have been a time I managed to get on the booking app at 18:00:01 to bag one of the spaces right outside the door!

Yeah, the Carina E is my grandad's old car so that won't be going anywhere.

Saw one on the road today in mail collection mode. Not leccy, unlike the ones @Yoss has got at work now, and has the Pug front end:

Yes we have some 74 plate ones of those. And they have nice big badges on the back so you can see which of the Stellantis sub brands pretended to make them.

These electric ones are unmarked on the rear.

They are also noticeably shorter than our diesel versions. You can see the difference on both sides of the rear wheel arch. You would have thought the long wheelbase platform would have been better for electric to squeeze more battery in.

Also our diesels are proper red vans and not grey vans in a red wrap.

That second pic looks like you sneaked off the shot, upskirt style, while the driver was taking a slash or something.

I mean it wasn't my van but I was trying to emphasise how grey it was.

I was out in the drive earlier working on the Rover 75 (fitting a new brake pad wear sensor in a (successful) attempt to get rid of the annoying warning light that had been on for the last year or so), and a bloke I'd never met before stopped and asked me if I wanted a new front spring FOC.

He told me that he had a 75 a few years back and bought a spring to replace a broken one, but then realised what a twat of a job it was and just bought a complete secondhand strut instead.  (Story checks out, thought I.)  The spring has been cluttering up his shed ever since so he was happy to find a good home for it.  I love old cars sometimes.

Roffle win RC Crawler from @Dick Cheeseburger now up and running.

Softer springs and a few more suspension adjustment and its good to go.

I'm going RC bashing on Thursday with one of the other basketball dads. The council have left a large pile of gravel and dirt in a nearby car park. Hopefully the new spring is will have arrived then.

Because I'm an idiot, I threw a load of money at my £300 Vel Satis V6 to make it cosmetically better. It was this clean for under 24hrs...

20250821_201234.jpg.d2d23e66a2e73e955fb2838d6b7c2a16.jpg

Then I drove it to the Sussex/Surrey/Kent area for various reasons. It is dusty there.

20250822_164729.jpg.d2b9be66b218aa5128420a3059a66c1b.jpg

Even worse, the gearbox started misbehaving just like the V6 turbo diesel I owned earlier in the year. Plus the rear suspension sounds like boulders in a barrel rolling down a hill. So that's standard Vel Satis then.

It's the usual problem of it going into neutral, which was so shit an idea that Volvo disabled that feature when they in used the same gearbox. Then it thinks back into Drive, eventually by which time you're now shitting yourself at a junction because it won't move, so you floor it and now it neutral drops into gear and wheelspins away, quickly caught by the traction control which now cuts power so it looks like you're a new learner driver who hasn't sussed the clutch yet.

This has steadily got worse on the drive home today to the point it went into full meltdown limp mode in Bracknell, which is not somewhere I wanted to get stuck. Pulled over, rebooted, drive back to Wales with no further issues apart from a few scary junctions.

So I'm doing the sensible thing and offering it up for a loss in the For Sale section if anyone is interested. You HAVE to try one, just to see if they're as bad as everyone says. You do NOT have to try two of them. That's just stupid.

Oh and the cruise control packed up on the way home too. I wondered if a long trip was a good idea in this car. It wasn't. The air con is also kaput. It has a week of MOT left.

(Done…NM)

Went to a lovely little show over in Amlwch on Ynys Mon today. Great variety and it seemed like most of the cars were local (many sporting local dealer plates).

Aw nice!

Were you displaying a car or just visiting?

I had the Corsa parked just down from that Landcrab.
