I had a bloke show up here with an Irish accent offering cheap tools, of all things. There was something about a shipment to Oslo that got cancelled and he had been given permission by the boss to sell the tools at a discounted price.

Of course I wasn't interested.

So have I now encountered my first UK/Irish traveler that I've heard about here? I guess so.

none of this left over from a job nearby?

Clearing out my boss's industrial unit, which was at one time used by a vehicle repairer. We have now uncovered the long lost ladies toilet, which is stuffed full of all-sorts of interesting junk including a MK5 Cortina centre console and radio, as well as various Saab and Jaguar bits

Is it correct to suspect that the tool belongs to someone other than those selling it?

If the tools are new, then No,but they tend to be of poor quality.

Secondhand tools,Yes.

Please do.  I've always had a hankering for a 1984 calendar.

And they're back, I aren't home but Dad is and got them to leave despite his lack of English. It was a different bloke now but the same van.

I'm starting to get a little scared of a break-in and things disappearing at night now.

I'd keep an eye on things, and lock the shed that you normally don't or whatever. Take a note of their plate number, too. In the UK they often have GB style plates made up with their ROI number, so that they stand out less.

Usually when I see them they ask if my drive wants block paving, and then fuck off when I tell them no.

Photograph them and their vehicle. They will probably get cross with you but they might feel like you need leaving alone.

Saw a free Erde 122 trailer on marketplace on Sunday, they said the tyres would need pumping up. Drove over there, fuck me, the tyres weren’t on the rims anymore and were so perished they’d split into different sections pretty much.

Anyway, ordered a set of brand new rims and tyres for £49 on Amazon and went back today for it.

Has a cover too, pretty happy for what it owes me! I have no need for it so will probably just see if I can flip it for a quick £100 profit.

Coincidentally, there's now a small group of the travelling community staying in a park here (which isn't really allowed, but the police doesn't seem interested) who offer to do up driveways and roofs. Transit Mk V on British plates, towing a trailer with an Irish reg. Weird.

Last year another bunch of travellers crashed their pickup while trying to flee out of town, chased by unhappy customers!

I spotted a green GT6 outside one of my shops this afternoon, chap was trying to put a tall bunch of flowers in the hatch 🤣

He said he's spent 8 months painting it, today is first time it's been on the road and he'd just driven 100 miles in it. He had a big smile, and back ache.

Don't be too worried, they just want quick cash for their shit tools.

They'll move onto another patch once they've exhausted the current area.

Noice trip out last night to the East Coast Retros meet at Shotley, Suffolk. Despite being eligible, it didn’t feel right to ‘show’ the Avensis - so we just had a perv.

It was a much quieter show than I’m used to, but still some lovely stuff. My favourite car of the night being…

IMG_3916.jpeg.a1a5e6b73667fc1c0b6b77cb62f81194.jpeg

The best 850R I’ve ever seen. What a colour! As a James May fan, I was disappointed not to find a workshop in the back along with a library and an itchy blanket - but it was great.

IMG_3920.jpeg.2b07cc1ad4e149c77671f8f87a46b783.jpeg

Everything on this was brown. Paint, vinyl roof, door cards, seats, dash - even the owner’s wallet and leather sunglasses holder was brown.

Also present was the Ford Granada of many shiters but my phone is having a spaz and won’t let me upload the photos. Suffice to say it still looks gloriously rubbish.

Been to the pub for the first time in years this evening. Much better experience in the last time I went, not least because pints cost half what they did in the last pub I went to. They did good pizza too!

Now on the bus home wondering why everything is so wobbly.

As long as they aren't called O'Driscoll, and they aren't from Rathkeale.

In 2018, two O'Driscoll men from Rathkeale followed a 72 year old lady from Goleen in West Cork home, and filled her living room with the following items:-2052686_1_articlemedium_51385340_10156691336548001_6259181296455516160_o.jpg.fef67f2ea244db6f9fb854f7a795eb2b.jpg

Generators, Pressure Washers, and Chainsaws, mainly. All the things your average 72 year old lady needs. Then they coerced her to write out €25000 in cheques for them. When it got to court they got 3 years each. They appealed their sentence the following year, but at the start of the case Mr Justice George Birmingham, President of the Court of Appeal , pointed out that their sentence could also be increased. So after a quick discussion with their SC, the appeal was withdrawn.

I've bought cheap stuff off one or two travellers, and sold cars to them, and they've been all right. But a substantial stratum of the "travelling" community are ruthless outlaws.

I've two rules I stick by when dealing with travellers,

1: Don't buy from them.

2: Don't sell to them.

It's stood me well this far.

The guys selling tools generally want a quick sale, then they'll move onto a new patch quickly.

Those lads you refer to,were greedy and stupid to pull that stunt, and thankfully they were caught for it.

Ah bugger, didn't realise that was on last night.  I'll have to try to get to next month's one.  I'll have taxed the Carina by then so will have something to drive down in.

Wouldn’t fit. Tried up on its side but too tall, and the van has racking so wouldn’t have gone in the correct way up either… trust me I tried 😂

Been on another 200 mile day trip with the Škoda. This time to the Gloucestershire Warwickshire Railway diesel gala (reports in the railshite thread).

Stopped off at Stow on the Wold for breakfast.

Parked in front of a fancy building (yes I can see the Maxus, I parked next to it deliberately but that has its own thread).

IMG_20250726_080634.jpg.9824c040b0458509c37cd4acef8be6f4.jpg

But also this was over the road.

IMG_20250726_080710.jpg.86753871f58afe0224101fb50c420fc6.jpg

IMG_20250726_083007.jpg.42200fe93b6feaaab18eec09a11ebe06.jpg

Then I found a bakery.

IMG_20250726_081250.jpg.5f62236ed058d84bb148610a9924c8c9.jpg

IMG_20250726_081429.jpg.ba373874939bae320512008c0a827169.jpg

I had actually already had one breakfast so I kept it light.

IMG_20250726_081753.jpg.8865de6a4e78594d5890756b857a97fa.jpg

I then stopped off at Stow again on the way home mainly because I had no signal to post my last railshite post when I was parked under this viaduct.

IMG_20250726_165120.jpg.5a9b88ace67cc78f5069e658ccdc7a30.jpg

Obviously much busier in the afternoon but I found another space right next to the Rolls which had moved further up the High Street.

IMG_20250726_172127.jpg.2326128ca8d17b8790dec529768a65c9.jpg

IMG_20250726_172141.jpg.0c7315e5c52058efa2f380fa8c34d7ac.jpg

IMG_20250726_173624.jpg.c705a6a4761fc800b26dd7d6c39322e8.jpg

Which also happened to be outside an ice cream shop with a couple of chairs outside. So I sat here and ate my ice cream and watched several old men eye up my car including this one.

IMG_20250726_172724.jpg.dc2baa51e86ae0d559c24ad160b4c54f.jpg

The Rolls was obviously attracting all the normal tourists but my car seemed to attract men of a certain age.
