This bus came straight out of service in 1998 and other than attending shows from time to time,  has not been touched since. It now lives at the Glasgow Vintage Vehicle Trust.

I have been photographing it since just after that time as it was numerically the last Leyland Atlantean for Glasgow, but I have never noticed the advert for the 'new' Daewoo cars on the back until this afternoon:

Dents, wood screws and all, I really hope this one just gets left alone and not restored, erasing its story.

I bought my first car from the Yorkhill Quay.  Although by that time it was Sharks Ford.

Love the daewoo ad. Agreed - its brilliant exactly as it is hopefully they preserve rather than restore.

You don’t get posh people on there any more. Someone I know appeared on it; she was from Chatham

History repeats itself.

Fit new Michelin to CRV.

Short time after, get a flat.

Will find out when I get it off later.

Jacking a car on a hill and removing wheel. What could possibly go wrong?

Gonna try and get some air in it, hope it holds for long enough to find a flat bit of road.

Posted

Well it took some air.

Then I moved it forward to rotate wheel 1/4 turn and found the culprit.

Thankfully bang in middle of tyre so will be pluggable :)

You never know, it could be only half a meter or it could be well over 1 meter. Every winter is different.

I can expect the first snow within 2 to 3 weeks and road salt can start at any time now.

Nope. St Mary’s island.

A SMOLL update on the Auction-find Fiesta.

Whilst it was having a snooze, I got bored and attempted to sort any gremlins out that I had found.

First up, the drivers seat fabric was torn on the bolster with a smaller hole next to it for good measure.

A quick needle and thread session later and it’s better. I’m not a seamstress but that’s not a bad job I think.

IMG_9628.thumb.jpeg.cdf67c19d48e2f6c26774245a96b045b.jpeg

I’ve found out it’s also great for storing all your worldly possessions (well, some of them.)

IMG_9629.thumb.jpeg.9b8d443aeed09ff1b2b3e2e821b5b2f4.jpeg

Further de-snagging - it had no brake or clutch pedal rubbers which is an instant MOT fail IIRC. A quick trip to the bay of E sorted me a brand new pair for under £4. I was astonished when they plopped through the postbox the very next day, that’s amazing delivery make no mistake. Bunged them on and they fit like a glove. Unlike O.J. Simpson’s.

I’m after a set of these hubcaps if anyone’s got a set going spare?

IMG_6363.jpeg

Has to be these ones as they are TEH SEX. Ford really know how to make a good set of trims. Not just of this era of Fiesta, take a look at the Escorts, Mondeos with the GLX swirly trims. Fucking peachy.

Bonnet up and let’s have a look at that catch.

It will release, but very very slightly. It doesn’t seem to feel as free as it should.

Verdict: FUKD. Get a new one, greengartside.

So just assessing the engine bay in general. Nice and tidy, and looks honest for 99k miles.

IMG_9644.thumb.jpeg.2a601dce111184c1a25971d2a7fee03b.jpeg

Not su…..WAIT, what’s that?

IMG_6487.thumb.png.ad6f5019308d2670d42a9351b0015d6d.png

A white wire? Hmm, let’s have a look then.

IMG_9649.thumb.jpeg.0592a7c92c97a7b9633ddfbedeef4090.jpeg

Speaker wire! Someone’s been bodging! It came from down near the N/S headlamp & the horn. Both of those work though, and the wire was chopped at that end. Let’s follow it and see where it goes.

IMG_9648.thumb.jpeg.2a3e33707d258bb8dfbc95605b9c28f6.jpeg

The fuck is this bodgery? I’ve already removed one side of the earth wire by this point. I also found this cut gubbins atop the headlamp screw point.

IMG_9650.thumb.jpeg.8b3d9f969917e4be9ba520a883910f2f.jpeg

So I carefully* removed this fire waiting to happen and disposed of it in a sensible black bin manner. I kept the fuse holder though because hoarder.

All I can surmise is that the speaker wire led to one of those LED light bars that Nicky or Luke like putting on the front of their cars to make them look like a Transformer, or a Hyundai. Fair play that they actually used proper spade connectors, and not twisted the wires together and taped them like someone used to do 20 years ago. I did that with fucking stereos 😳 - I think this would also explain why there are no wheeltrims with it. Nicky or Luke fitted some 17 INCH SICK RIMZ I guess and chucked the trims away.

Anyway, more updates as and when and all that.

Officially properly up for sale now.  The cause of sale is a house move caused by (totally amicable, no drama) relationship ending, or rather turning into a friendship.  Would very much appreciate a hassle free sale as I've got quite enough adulting to deal with over the next few months.

TR6 had the Triumph straight six in it at 2500cc with twin carbs or injection.
Same engine was in my Vitesse at 2000cc with twin carbs - the exhaust was virtually a straight pipe and the wee thing burbled away nicely like you say - drank fuel like a Glaswegian Jakie on Buckie
Like @artdjones says - the GT6 also ran the 2000cc version too (early Vitesse had a 1600cc version of the straight six). I think you got about 90 HP out of the 2000 but the TR6 got about 130 BHP

There's about 83 different power outputs on the Triumph straight six depending on model and year but the early TR6s had 150bhp and early 2.5PI saloons had 132bhp by having a different cam more suited to to a saloon car. Later cars lost a bit of power as more emmisions gubbins was added and the last 2500S which replaced the 2.5PI only had 106bhp on its twin SUs which was not great for a 2.5 even then. Despite this they still went well enough, mixture of better low down torque and revised gearing I think.

These days of course most cars have probably had at least one engine swap and there are plenty of GT6s and Vitesses with 2.5 engines which they never sold with. I once had a very early mk1 2000 with a mere 91hp mated to a Borg Warner 3 speed auto. It was slower than my 1300 TC but that didn't matter because it had that straight six under the bonnet. And these days most of the big saloons have a Chris Witor stainless exhaust and sound absolutely glorious. I've said several times on these pages that the Triumph straight six is the best sounding engine out there, I'm glad some other people have started noticing this too!

I still hanker after one of these but, to be honest, I don't really have the facilities to properly look after a 1970s car (so I'm running the 940 as our estate car)

At some point Triumph changed over from quoting HP to SAE standards to doing it to DIN standards, which are lower. Early TR6s are 150hp (SAE) and later ones 125hp (DIN) but there's not much real difference between them.

Ooh, that's nice. Looks like Saffron yellow. You see quite a few TR6s in that colour but very few saloons. Also, that's a Chris Witor exhaust, that'll sound lovely.

I'd love another one too but prices went silly a few years ago. There used to be a time when they cost about the same as as the small saloons, although that was about thirty years ago admittedly. Also I only have one garage and I've built shelving and a bench all around the 1300 for maximum storage so I'd struggle to get one in. I could leave it outside if course, I'm just making excuses now.

They did but the two measurements are much closer than that, the above was mostly down to emmisions control, though fortunately we weren't in the US where even stricter controls meant the TR5 and 6 had twin carbs instead of injection and a mere 111hp.

Obviously I was exaggerating for comic* effect but as an example the  mk1 2000 saloon only had 91hp whilst the Vitesse and GT6 had 104hp at the same time. Many of those engines found their way in to the saloons over the years.

It's mostly promoted on Facebook but you don't need to be on there to participate as I have a separate website for buying tickets and you will be contacted via email or phone if you were to win.

More ‘goona action. The scrubbed up and generally borderline front tyre with inner shoulder wear has finally been swapped for a nicer* part worn. Managed to get an identical Michelin to match the rest too. These things matter on a sub £500 motor.
