Nope! I am scratching my head as to how it happened. This morning the door opened freely. This afternoon, it caught the wing and did that in a second. I've been within 20 feet of it (the other side of a ground floor window) all day at the computer and haven't been watching it, but I think I would've noticed something happening to it. Really odd. This was An Job.  That's the dynamo from the Lanchester, and the old fan belt.  You see the bolts that go through it for the bracket there?  Not plain through bolts.  You have to undo the nuts on the inside of the bracket then hold the two flat sides on the threaded bar with pliers and undo the outer nuts before being able to slide the bolts out.  There's also holes in the threaded bar that look like they should take a locking wire, just to make it even harder to deal with, and thankfully those wires were long gone.  On the plus side, the mounting bracket makes for a perfect handle to carry the dynamo with.

Now I can deal with that stud that's spinning which I couldn't access with the dynamo installed.  Did I mention it took two of us to remove this because of how it's all designed?  I suspect when the engine isn't in the chassis this is a lot easier to deal with.

Yeah I'd hoped they'd just do the oil and filter change however they seem to be a knowledgeable place. Also the technician report was as thus:

"Standard Labour
Investigate gearbox fault.
Checked fault memory, 2 faults logged
" clutch 2 tolerance limit reached"
" clutch 2 mechanical malfunction"
Carried out test plan for faults, test plan
automatically checked pre selected
measured values and evaluated event
entries.
Concluded that the dual clutch requires
replacing.
The next step would be to remove the
gearbox and inspect clutch for damage
or wear.
It might be worth also removing the
mechatronic whilst gearbox removed to
check selector forks as these are known
to fail.
8 hours for clutch replacement
may require fly wheel
if we do remove the mech would require
new gasket and bolts plus 0.6 hours"

I've been seconded from my current trust to assist teaching in university, teaching new Paramedics. Wonderful. Looking forward to it. Was a bit down and out thinking I was getting slightly pigeonholed in my role but this a good chance to build up a route of of here. 

Sad thing is that I've to commute to city centre Manchester which I've not planned on the right way to do it. 

Still a few beers are in store for the weekend. 🥳

Is the £1700 quid including the dual mass flywheel and selector fork?

Got the PAS pulleys swapped. It's been slightly mullered though, as the first people I went to tried using a gear puller instead of a hydraulic press, and bent the pulley out of shape a bit. Their neighbour pressed the old one out and the new one on after making sure it wasn't too bent. As he took the paint off to look at the damage, I've splashed some of my own back on.

I've two chips to rectify on the wing, so it's looking like I'll be spending tomorrow getting the car mobile then Sunday making it look nice again.

the smart cars brakes needed bleeding, unfortunately the fluid reservoir lid was on too tight - some minor disassembly was required

got ya, ya wee bugger !

re-assembly involved rather a lot of cable ties 

and the brakes are still rubbish (i didn’t have time to do the rears as it started chucking it down and only the front half would fit in the garage )

How low is low mileage? How often has it had a DSG service and when was the last one? (time/miles) 

If the box hasn't been looked after I wouldn't bother repairing it as they're ticking time bombs if not looked after, in that instance I'd just get a trusted reconditioned one fitted. 

A £1700 repair is a lot for a 14 year old Golf. But you can't get a decent one for that to replace it 🤔 add in the sentimental factor (?) I'd say get it fixed, whether that's a replacement box or repairing your existing box

Jag is booked on at local specialist on Monday for a diagnostic etc to tell me what the griff is with it. 

Yesterday though the engine management light came on and I plugged in my £20 diagnostic jobbie and it said the egr flow was high. 

Not sure if this is a new issue or is maybe its the cause of its woes. It probably would fit the issues it has. 

I'd take it apart this weekend and give it a service with some 3 in one in case its stuck but I'm taking the lad out both days, so is still going to the Jag specialist to get looked at still in case its something else too. They can look at it with some proper Jag diagnostics and some sort of mechanical know how. 

I hope its fixable. I do genuinely quite like this car. Even if this one is bollox, I'd consider another but I do think/hope this one is actually salvageable. I've been smoking around in it all week and its been quite cool and I like the old man colour as I am old man these days. I'm completely sure I don't look like an absolute tool driving around in it blasting out Fantazia 92 at full volume wearing my Fila bucket hat.

I would get it done. 1700 is a decent price for fixing a dsg.

My local auto specialist won't even change the fluid on my powershift.

Garages don't like dsg boxes, due to borkage potential.

Plus the sentimental value of the car, plus what else are you going to get for 1700. Yes you could get something else, but it won't be as tidy as what you have now.
