I'm telling myself, it will polish out.

It mostly will I agree!

The ex's car got a similar love kiss and after a good polish, then a wax and glaze and normal wash, 5 minutes with a black sharpie over the time remains then another coat of wax and it vanished*

*for 3/4 months until the sharpie wore off and needed reapplying but she backed it into a bollard in another place a while later so it mattered less after that 😂

Been a mad couple of weeks for the Mini.

120 miles after buying it it became obvious that HGF had occurred.

Called the trader I bought it from who offered to take the car back, or to get the HG replaced.  I agreed to getting the HG replaced, and paid to get the timing chain replaced at the same time.

Car was delivered back to me a couple of days ago. I took it for a quick spin and after about 5 miles noticed that the heater had gone colder. That's never good when a cooling system has been flushed and the head has been off. Take the car back home, leave it for the night. Next morning I topped up the coolant and bled the cooling system until coolant ran steadily from the bleed screw and the heater was blowing hot.

Let it run for 10 min and the fan kicked in and out so happy days.

Now one of the daftest bits of car design in history means that if you have a Mini Cooper S with factory navigation it doesn't have a temperature gauge, just an idiot light.

The BMW Mini has a two speed cooling fan. The low speed kicks in at 105°c, high speed at 115°c.  The one without nav also have a heavily weighted temp gauge where 104°c will read as normal, so the gauge doesn't move.

There's a secret menu in the dash where it is possible to get a coolant temp reading. It's a fiddly thing to access, but I dialed it up and took the Mini for a spin. Temp comes up to 90°c pretty quickly, heater working well, all good. Then I get stuck in heavy traffic. The temperature starts to rise quickly. 95°, 100°c, 105°c, 110°c - at this point I'm beginning to get stressed - 114°c then it starts to drop quickly back down as the fan has kicked in.

I drive back home and the temp stays between 84°-94° when the car is moving. As soon as I park up I open the coolant bleed screw and lots of air is obvious in the system as the heater matrix is gurgling away. When the gurgling stopped I ran the engine for another few minutes with the bleed screw closed,  when the temp reached 97° switched off the engine and opened the bleed screw again. More gurgling from the heater pipes for a few minutes until eventually a long, satisfying burp was heard from the bleed screw.

I suspect the garage had attempted to bleed a coolant system that was above 100°c, and that's difficult to do as water turns to steam...

Anyway. It looks like all the work that has been done to my mini was all down to a failed £5 100w 0.33 ohm resistor that controls the low speed cooling fan.

Resistor ordered, I'll fit it over the weekend and hopefully the little Mini will be fighting fit.

Fitted after 18 months my reversing camera,  I ordered a camera to replace numberplate light,, as u can see it don't..grrr.

Followed instructions but somehow the screen is on permanently rather than just when reverse is selected,  but after 3 hours standing, in the cold irritated my hip and hands so it'll do for now.

Well, a package has finally arrived from ECP, hopefully containing the Outback's new droplinks.

It's as well their security seal system is totally* impregnable.

Fantastic choice of tagline from Starline:

'Attractive solution'.

Not high quality.

Not long-lasting.

Not precision engineered.

Just an attractive solution.

Well, if it stops the front end from banging for a while, then it'll do the job...

Ooosh, fingers crossed it’s more negative than a EuroNCAP review of a Renault Zoe

@Talbot, I think you need to step your death-mower game up.

@Six-cylinder @Mrs6C With the green Range Rover gone there must be a space in the field for another nugget of Green-Oval shite 😉

Could you show a bit more at the top of the photo please, for Advertisement purposes.

My DiL is a Manager at Althams Travel, but not that one.

FAKE NEWS

Oh, and SLR? Is it named after a Belgian assault rifle in British service or is the geek part of my brain riffing in this respect?

Out with the fam for my mother's birthday last night. I got talking with the fil and he mentioned the scrap man was collecting his '07 300c estate today. It's a 3.0 v6 diesel auto. I told him to cancel and I'll have it (the mental fucker).  The mot runs out today and it needs a battery. It's also been done up like a bentley with all the badges, grille etc.

At £280 it could be the bargain of the year.
