Off to Kefalonia tomorrow for a couple of weeks with Mrs CCC. Any interest in posting pictures of random chod in the spotted thread? Last year there was some beautiful* Dataun pick ups still working for a living....

It's taken just over three months, but MrsH and I have finally exchanged contracts on our first home. A lovely three bed stone cottage in a quiet village with a large driveway and a garage that can actually be worked in, even better, the local pub is a five minute walk uphill, and a two minute downhill stumble.

Pick up the keys next Wednesday and move next Saturday, I can't bloody wait.  :-D

Wuvvum, what is the needle valve made from? Anything magnetic?

Sadly they are usually brass.

There is nothing more exciting than the last few minutes of an eBay auction.

Those wheels I nearly sold for £7 on Facebook are currently at a nice round £500. That's without centre caps and wearing 20 year old rubber.

Unbelievable scenes Jeff.

£530. Already paid.

That's numberwang.

I owe both Trigger and a couple of his car club lads a pint.

That van appears to be Somerset rather than A70 based, which makes it even more mysterious as I thought that the "Devon" based A40 van outlived the Somerset cars.

I can't reconcile the body pressings to anything Austin produced, I know that some Dutch and Danish coachbuilders did Morris based vans that we didn't get here so maybe this is something Scandinavian or European in origin?

Bloody lovely, whatever....

Bit late to the party here, but the A40 Somerset van is definitely a homebrew. There was never a Somerset based commercial, the Devon based commercials soldiered on until 1956 when they were replaced with the A50 ones. There were A70 pickups and shooting brake estates, though this one is a Somerset.

It's definitely a Somerset front end, cab, doors etc but interestingly the back is very similar in style to a Devon van. It's a cut down Somerset saloon, definitely, but what I'm less sure about is if the back end is a home fabrication or if it's the back end of a Devon van grafted onto the Somerset front end and chassis. The chassis is the same so it's certainly doable. It does appear to have Somerset saloon rear wings and the matching bulges where the back doors would be. Would love to see some pictures of the back end and hear more about the story behind it, great looking van and not one I'm aware of.

I've still got my salvaged 75 tourer. Initially this was due to the new v5 not materialising, so I simply couldn't get rid untill I sorted that. In the time since I've given it a load of TLC and its a different car to the one I picked up in April. I suppose it shows I bought a dummy but I've really enjoyed learning about These ( very underrated IMO) cars and found it therapeutic. I was out on dartmoor in it at the weekend....

Which is the old knacker?

After recent good behaviour I decided to sort the mangled up front end and broken bumper by getting hold of a better one to sort the cosmetics a bit

Just had a long chat with Paul from Specialist Cars re my dollop. It seems that the starting is fixed (fingers, toes, arse cheeks crossed!) and they can get the discs skimmed... at the local Ferrari dealer! For £102 per corner! Plus VAT of course. It is getting stupid now: the car has been gone for eight weeks and will be another week at least. All that we 'know' is properly fixed is a fuel gauge bulb and the clock which I bought separately and had sent to them. It is booked in for a service and MOT on the 12th of September and it is looking like there will be no point in it coming home before that date!

I tried to get an update on the bill from him, but failed. His idea of 'not horrendous' and mine probably differ somewhat!

That is utterly beautiful in a "all of a sudden I'm reading Max Power and dreaming of Porsche Mint Green Astra GTEs" again.

As a few of you may have read I had engine failure on my saph, today I have stripped the ancillaries off, drained it down and unbolted everything ready to be pulled when I have the replacement, i thought I'd look down the exhaust ports to see if anything was untoward, no1 exhaust valve was missing completely

I am intrigued at what failed etc, i am planning to do a post mortem on it if I get chance when I've got the replacement in

Posted

If the camchain tensioner wheel hasn't collapsed then the missing valve is the likely culpret, wouldn't be the first one I'd seen.

Posted

The Chain tensioner wheel was replaced as was the timing chain and guides, i havn't come across valves getting up and fucking off randomly on these, every day is a school day

Posted

It's not that common, but I've personally dealt with a snapped valve trashing the engine at least five times in the last 20 years, three were catastrophic on the road failures and the other two were both "good" engines supplied to fit.

Chain failure most common, followed by serious HGF and then big ends on these imo.

Our old Metro dropped a valve. No idea why. Made some impressive carnage, especially as Mrs DW drove it home...

I think I've f*cked up. I did about 230 miles in the RAV today. Jeepers those seats are crap! I have many aches. Next week, I have to drive it about 600 miles in two days. I may have to drive it another 300 miles later this week. Why am I so shit at buying cars?! Why don't I own something GOOD at motorways?!
