Mr 83C has asked me to go look at a Rover 75 with him this AM.

Trouble is, I know nothing about them. (except OMGHGF)

I don't think I imagined it, but did someone on here visit a Citroen hoarder/scrapyard near Gatwick a few years ago?

I'm just actively thinking of good places to go for fancy bits for the ZX but I also have a feeling that the above was run by a person with no sense of values?

I'm also thinking (pure blue sky) of going to France later this year to see if I can get any parts, but am I likely to be disadvantaged by 1) not being French and being charged the earth and 2) picking the wrong yards to visit?

That was probably me, about a year ago. Buying anything from that chap would certainly be a challenge. Thought it was near Heathrow rather than Gatwick, though I can remember amazingly little about it, probably because the bloke made it feel like an utter waste of my time paying a visit. You'd have more luck convincing Farage to kiss Cameron than actually convincing that bloke to sell you anything. An annoying waste!

Errur

Driven 300 miles since I've redone the timing and all was looking good.

Bit tappy top end and a little low on oil so topped that up.

Driving into work it got seriously hot x2. First one was following a big lorry up a hill, so I just coasted down the other side. Temp seemed to settle and thought nothing of it. Then boiled over in the car park at work and top hose was rock solid.

Hope this is not OMGHGF the ungrateful shit.

Thanks DW, knew I hadn't daydreamed about it. Shame the guy is like that, although I'd be happy enough going just to see all the old Citroens really, even if prying anything off of him is impossible.

Also beko, cheers for alerting me to that. The thing is, I don't really need anything but needing and wanting are two separate things! I really want some ZX alloys which aren't 200 miles away, and can't help but feel that anything exclusive to the carb models will become like gold dust reasonably soon. When I pass my test, we should definitely arrange some form of ZX meet.

Bought a new wing for the SD1 from Rimmers - £112 delivered.

Travelling to Sheffield to collect the £70 would have ultimately cost me £100 with the diesel so it's a no brainer.

Currently in Le Mans.

Came down in my mate's Winnebago, couldn't resist getting a shot of it through Tetre Rouge.

Punto sold, down to using a 24 year old car as a daily   Going to invest* about 300 quid in another cheap motor as a back up. Something 51 plate onwards, fancy a suzuki Ignis!

Had 'the' phone call from specialist cars. Changed the fuel gauge bulb, so that's all good!

That, unfortunately, is where the good news ends. Nothing horrendous though, just all inconclusive... again. My temp gauge reads 'wrong' and the temp on the computer is spot on, the wheel bearings are spot on just tyre places are making a religion out of being fucktards that want to try it on and scam a few quid (well, there's a surprise!) and there is nothing wrong with the starter motor or the wiring to it, all earths are good, all relays working properly, starter itself on bench test admittedly, checks out fine.

This is getting FUCKING TEDIOUS!

The last thoughts that Craig, Paul and myself (conference call - posh eh?) could come up with is: the immobiliser is playing up. The chip in the key 'could' be faulty.... Now, we all recall (we do all recall, don't we? Are you lot paying attention?) the fun and games trying to get a new key for this fucker... none match/work in this, awkward bloody car. So I suggested getting a blank key, having it cut to match my key and then coding it to the car. Paul decided to investigate if this was possible...

It is! But, there NO Bentley master keys anywhere in the entire universe, certainly not this side of the rings of Saturn and so, once again, we are fucked. But, there are Rolls Royce master keys aplenty! So I will be forced to have an RR key in my Bentley (oh the shame!) and of course, this is going to cost a fortune. How's this for sense: a key direct from Bentley, cut for my car is £80 plus vat. An uncut, blank key for my car is £90 plus vat... Then of course, it has to be cut and then coded to the car....

A new lock set however is about 5 grand plus about three days labour (exaggeration again, like 97 speakers) so, let's hope it works.

Oh, and they adjusted the handbrake... I have NEVER used the handbrake since it was all re-built!

So, the car is staying up there for a few days/week. I suggested sending Craig out to get chips in it to see if it would play up and Paul countered with, they have to fetch twelve new tyres, they'd use my car for the trip!

I genuinely have no idea how much this is going to cost this time, so any/best guesses?

Well done, you know my opinion of Gammas, I loved mine but was terrified of it dying. At least you have a choice of using something reliable (like the XJS) instead. Mine was a 2.5 IE automatic, I used to get about 13mpg out of it running around.

Ouch.  That's a bit crap for an injected four, being about what I get out of the V12.  Thankfully most of them seem to have been converted from the unique and frail standard auto to a manual gearbox, which I'm sure* is much* better on fuel.

Or does mpg = miles per garage visit?

Or does mpg = miles per garage visit?

I have to be fair to the car and admit that it never completely let me down. The 13mpg was probably down to short trips to and from work, the one time I was brave enough to do any distance in it, I think I got just over 20mpg from it. It's main issues were random electrical ones, probably due to lack of use. Occasionally it liked to leave the thermostatic electric fan running to run the battery down unless I pulled the wire off the relay and put it back later, the central locking was quite random in its decision which door to leave unlocked; on its only long trip I had to drive in the dark and experienced the headlights getting bright and dim randomly, which I assumed to be alternator related. The only other odd fault was with the autobox, sometimes when you put it in D it didn't want to go, move it to 2 and set off it was fine and when you moved it back to D after setting off it was fine. I have heard so many bad things about them that I was quite scared to use it as transport in case it died. It's only other issue which put me off was how low it was, it had quite a long wheelbase and putting it in and out of the garage, unless I was very careful, it would ground out on the exhaust. I did get the exhaust reslung and slightly altered, but it was still a 50% success rate whether I got it in and out without clouting it. To make up for it I bought two 164s to use instead, a V6 Alfa and a straight 6 Volvo and kept the Lancia as an ornament until I ran out of space.

There is literally nothing to dislike about that as a lifestyle choice.

When I drive right, it comes back to life and wants a CODE

Will be controlled by a boost solenoid tho if you are thinking of tuning . Adjustments to the rod will be compensated out by the ecu and more than likely throw a code / limp home

They are ok, nice to drive and easy 35mpg no matter how hard you drive, turbo's, clutches, gearboxes and seized injectors in the head are common faults, I've done over 400k in them over the last 7 years, they are very comfy and I only began to get uncomfortable after a 6 hour stint, the renault ones are usually better specced and have AC.

Is the 1.9 diesel a Renault unit?

The one of Laguna hell?

First time I fitted a stereo to a car when I was 17, I just picked a random wire to rig it up to. Sadly the one I chose was the indicators and the radio would only work when i was turning a corner.

Ever rebuilt the fuseboxes?

Had some odd things like that on my XJ40 till I did that job.
