Bought a Volvo 343 last week and generally happy. Reacquainted myself with the Volvo300Mania forum and was appalled to see contagion from Germany to Holland.

The old man has just gone and bought an ex council Nissan Leaf at auction wcpgw

Posted

I really should check my email more often; I received one two days ago from my brother to tell me he has mot'd the TR7 and asking when I'm going to collect it.

It is already insured (it's been insured all the time, even though it hasn't been used for the last few years) so I will tax it on Friday. I really don't need this at the moment, but I think it has outstayed its welcome with him. I will make absolutely sure he doesn't want it first, but I think it will be up for sale. The trouble is while it's been parked up it has deteriorated, the paint has lifted on the headlamp pods and any small stone chip has blossomed. I'm not sure what it will look like with a good clean and polish, but I expect it really needs paint. I have no idea what it should go for, or even whether it is worth sorting the paint out first.

It's a 1980 TR7 Convertible in Triton Green metallic with blue check trim and a black hood. (and MGF alloys, because they had new tyres)

If anyone is interested "speke" now before it hits ebay

High miles? Cheap?

Plenty to go wrong but I await news with interest - don't hear many stories about how they get on with second and third owners (yet at least)

I honestly don't know whose fault it is in these situations.  Yes, I should have seen them but equally the main reason I didn't see them is because their vehicle just blended in to its surroundings where if they'd had just sidelights on they wouldn't.  I suppose I ought to get my eyes tested again too, just in case.

The daft thing is, every time there's a post on the GOM thread about headlamp brightness (which is approx. every 6 days) it turns around to Daytime Running Lights, and people getting all frothy about them, wanting them disabled etc etc.

This is exactly why DRLs are a good idea. Vulg, like most* of us on here you're only human and you make mistakes - great news is they're not scraping you off a UPS truck, so it's all good. More lights equals more visibility when your brain is having to deal with rain, shadows etc, I really don't see why we didn't have them years ago, and why people get so upset at a pair of lights on their car.

The trend for grey cars doesn't help either. Half the

Right then, I appreciate this is one of those irritatingly vague questions that no one's going to be able to answer properly, but my great aunt died at the weekend and as her closest relative the right side of 90 my mum has various things to sort out. Not the biggest priority for her right now, but apparently someone has already left a note asking if my aunt's Mini is for sale. No pictures and only a vague description as it's the other side of the country, but it's a mid-90s Mayfair auto with 30k-odd and owned by my aunt from new. We've been offered £2k but looking on eBay and Car and Classic asking prices seem to be all over the place. Seems a bit low to me though, any thoughts?

Sorry for your loss.  Regarding your question, the car is worth double that offer if it's really nice.  Autos aren't as desirable as manuals but someone will pay plenty for a genuinely unmolested Mini.

The trend for grey cars doesn't help either. Half the < 3 year old cars around are monochrome, just like tarmac.

The trouble with DRLs is they don't do the back lights. If they did they'd be a lot more use as you'd see the idiots in front of you with no lights when it's raining too.

The Sam Glover Allegro gives me tingles in the nether regions and I get paid tomorrow.

BUT it's at the wrong end of the country. All I want to do is completely ruin my life with shit cars, is that too much to ask?!

On the other hand, people are used to seeing retina piercing DRLs now so cars like mine in resale silver but without the lights just get pulled out in front of like there's nothing there. I hate it when people drive during the day with dipped beam on but sometimes I end up doing it to avoid having to brake like hell 4/5 times a journey. There's also the wankers with Kia Sportages (possibly the most badly driven cars on the road at the moment), Ford Kugas and the like who have the fucking things right on the line of the rear view mirror and drive up your chuff.

The Iveco breakdown truck has DRL's, but front lights only. Sometimes I need to sit on the wrong side of the road facing oncoming traffic at night. Do I take the risk of being shunted up the rear, or blind oncoming cars... Stupid. Y no sidelamps...

Mileage under 40k will indeed command a generous premium. I concur £4k is doable.

Re: Selling the mini.  Although many people go ahead and deal with someone's estate without difficulty or come-back, I think (from my own experience) that probate should be involved if there is a will, or letters of administration if not.

£4K is about right if the autobox is healthy and the bodywork sound.

I've been experiencing a phenomemon lately, familiar to anyone who's visited the reptile house at the zoo, in that whenever I get in the Laguna after leaving work on a sunny day my sunglasses steam up.

Time to sort out the leaky sunroof then.

I tried rodding the drain tubes, but didn't have a long enough bit of wire to hand.  Luckily someone posted a link in someone else's Gooner thread to a video someone's put on Youtube that shows where the drains come out.  Inexplicably, behind the wheel arch liner.  The bloke in the video must only have worked on Series Land Rovers and Morris Minors previously because he didn't have a Torx bit to undo the screw at the very bottom of the liner.  (You can get a set for about £1.59 from Wilko's, ffs.)  He does have a great work-around for this though as long as you don't need any skin on the back of your hand for the next six weeks.

Fortunately, I have a basic set of modern tools so I had no problem getting the liner off.

That's the end of the drain tube, right there in the middle.  Took out that little bit of plastic and a load of shite fell out.

And this little fella!

That's the end of the drain tube there, with a little stopper of gunge in the end.

Cleaned it all out, did the other side, stuck 'em back together and a quick test...

Over a full tank of fuel the ONLY warning light to have come on in the goona is the low fuel light. Hows that for reliability? (yes the tank is nearly empty)

There was, a couple of years ago, a Universal Volvo Welfare Balance operating which had similar effects.  Any time I did anything positive to my 940, one of CMS206's would go wrong - sometimes in a quite significant way - soon afterwards.  I couldn't live with the guilt and stopped trying to mend it in the end.

Going to an (house clearance) auction viewing tomorrow, in the catalogue is a 1998 Hyundai Coupe only 8600 miles on the clock, but no MOT since 2013.

Am I mad to even consider this? WCPGW?

Thanks for the help everyone. My immediate reaction was that £4k was about right. Now I've just got to work out how to drag it here from the Cotswolds...
