Earlier this afternoon, I saw something which I'm pretty sure isn't legal in the UK.

A guy was pootling along on a bicycle with an engine. One of those properly shonky looking things. Of course he wasn't wearing a helmet or any other protective gear.

However, I couldn't help but smile as he went past. It was so fecking slow it was hardly a danger to anybody but himself. :D

Pretty sure it should be registered, insured and the bloke should have licence and helmet.

Funnily enough I saw someone on an ancient, possibly French, engine on wheel moped on Saturday, again no plates or helmet.

WTF? Is it a factory prototype or maybe series 1 sides stitched into a TD5?

Anyone got any idea?

I think the 2dr was available right upto the end of the D2,and I'm guessing it was an Irish commercial originally for tax reasons.....

Depending on what it was, it may well have been perfectly legal. I was given one of those things, years ago. Badged as a "Mason", it was a REALLY heavy mountain bike, with a 34cc two-stroke engine. The engine drove a rubber wheel, which in turn drove the back wheel of the bicycle. It didn't run when I was given it, but I got it sorted, and got a right few bob for it.

ISTR that how the drive is transmitted determines whether it's a moped or not. Rubber wheel against the tyre=no, directly driven chain=yes. I think anyway, it was a pretty long time ago.

I also believe that some of the home shopping catalogue companies sold them for a time.

my boss has given me his spare 'loan' car - a Y-reg Rover 75 2.5KV6.  Despite saying I don't like these, after a hundred miles or so mixing motorways, A-roads and B-roads full of hills and hairpins I have warmed to it, even though the engine is quite gutless for its size with absolutely no torque - makes a nice noise though.

is it auto or manual? i dont think the autobox does the 2.5v6 many favours, its an engine that loves to be revved, but never does attached to an autobox.

duff VIS motors will make a miserable drive as well.

It's a manual, seems in good health as it is very smooth but the air con really makes a difference and it does seem to bog down when pulling away from roundabouts, there is a subtle miss under load sometimes noticeable which I would put down to old leads but it's tiny, barely perceptible. It had no torque but goes well enough if you keep the revs up and is a lovely motorway car.

I'm used to the 4.0 Jag now though plus a torquey old diesel so I'm a bit spoilt.

I have an Auto and that is super slug until 4000 rpm and then revs well, but not what you really want.

Did they ever do a 4x4 with selecta box? I had a d plated 750 fire years back and from what I recall it struggled to top 55 and didn't half drink fuel. Wouldn't mind a 4x4 though.

150 quid to get the radiator on the P6 re-cored. Does that sound about right?

Not bad I'd say. I've paid more for a landrover one re-cored 3 years ago.

Went to a (house clearance) auction today. This Merc was hiding in the corner for the next sale. 2.0 Auto, 129k on the clock, deceased owner, I'm tempted but the front n/s wing is a bit frilly and the passenger door mirror is missing. Other than that it looks quite clean.

Plenty of time to think about it as the next sale isn't for 4 weeks.

Wings on these are a consumable item....don't worry! A new mirror will be about £20.

A good 190e is as treat. Every journey is an event. They do go wrong though and are best treated to specialist care.

Ask me how I know.

No, no auto 4x4.  The 750's should be better on fuel than a 999cc, maybe the carb was knackered?

He's wrong about using a 2x4 to reshell a 4x4, the floor pan is totally different virtually a mk1 floor pan, converting a 2wd wont work either for same reason unless its a mk1 which is worth more than a 4x4 anyway!

Still some cheapish 4x4's about if you are willing to do some work and they really are fun off road!

No , that's what makes it interesting there was never a 2 door Disco2, even the commercials, predominantly for Ireland and other tax avoiding foreigners , as you say, were all 4 doors.

Not sure you can stitch a 1 side into a 2 as the overhang is longer. Side glass is five door sized, so I suspect the door has been blended into the side panel and I doubt that window opens.

So a bottle of holes rad weld turned up from Amazon today. Half the price of Kseal and does the same so gave it a go.

After dumping it in the expansion tank the bottle says leave to idle doe 15-25 minutes but after 15 it was still leaking, went for a drive.

Bugger me it worked! Obviously it wasn't getting hot enough standing there but now it's totally dry on the bottom of the radiator. Found a spray can of cavity wax so gave it a quick shit of that to be sure.

By the looks of it the top and bottom are symmetrical so I can flip it over and try again if it pops.

It's my car meet this evening if anyone is local. Normally about 120 cars turn up.

Radio for the granada has had to go away - too old for the shop I took it to, they have sent it to somebody else.

Cleaned out idle control valve and crankcase breather.

Had to get round to nr St. Albans for 9am this morning and so made a very rare foray onto the m25 in rush hour. Just joining at Chertsey I saw a Renault Feugo in my rear view mirror several cars back!

I'm using the Discovery at the moment after it overheated a couple of weeks ago.  The problem was that gunk in the cooling system had clogged up the thermostat.  I took the stat out and tipped a cup of washing powder in.  Last night I dropped the brown gunge out at work and refilled it with soapy water.  A couple more changes and it should be OK to put a new stat in.  Amazingly I have one in stock that DW bought and never fitted,  it even has gaskets.

After sorting out a wide variety of oil and coolant leaks on the Discovery it is now leaking screenwash,  if the blasted thing is that determined to mark it's spot I'm happier that it is only that.

Using it for work today a lady I know stopped for a chat,  she asked if I was still interested in the old British cars she remembered me driving as it was strange to see me in such a middle class car.  I grinned and said it was the other halfs.

After being shafted £108* to get keys programmed etc I had to sign a disclaimer 'cause Hartwell Ford thought my van was "dangerous and undriveable".

According to them the rear indicator bulbs on the van  "weren't orange enough".  Bollox, they are nearly new and orange as they come. What was wrong with orange plastic lenses anyway?

** I know, I know, there are cheaper ways of doing this. Except around here that is.

My dads xantia failed on (non) orange indicator bulbs, despite them being brand new out of the box in front of the tester.

Lucas Amber bulbs ( esp 581's) are rubbish . They are almost white from new . Osram are much better . Infact Lucas bulbs are shit these days . I've had several h4 and h7 headlight bulbs where the back plate isn't fitted square to the bulb so you don't get a decent pattern

Getting ready to bid farewell to the green Sierra tomorrow. It's been a short but exciting little journey... but it doesn't fit with plans even in the midterm and I've already got access to the Sierra bASe.

The dude is picking this up from exactly the same place AngryDicky took the bASe from last week.

I have a purchase agreed on something older and more unloved than this. Attempts being made for collection on Friday.

Oh, and the Mercedes was faultless in its rush hour Travels, but the average speed wouldn't have been better by 2cv. New thermostat seems ok, but temp rests a lot higher than before. I'd like to think it was 88 but Does anyone have a definitive description of the temp markers on the w124 gauge?

After years of just piling crap into my garage I decided today to have a clean up. I have a big shed that was also piled up with crap and spiders. Today was mostly spent cleaning up and going to the tip. Clearing out the garage resulted in finding a lot of shelf brackets and wooden shelves. These were fitted into the shed. The shit in the garage was sorted out and placed logically on the new shelves in the shed. I now have a clean and clear garage that just contains the Oldsmobile, the shed is now clean and contains tools and equipment neatly placed on shelves. Most of the spiders have either run away or been taken to the tip in the multitude of soggy cardboard boxes that went. Result is a massive renewal of mojo on the car fixing front. I know where everything is and am dead keen to get on with fixing shite again. Result!!

The sheer amount of stuff I bought again that I already had but couldn't find was staggering.

I had a purge of my garage a few years ago and it was satisfying taking stuff that I had not needed in 15 years to the tip.  Unfortunately, the purge petered out before reaching the loft of the garage.  I have not been up there for at least 20 years.  The only item I can recall putting up there is a worn out driveshaft for a Citroen Dyane, but there seems to be a fair selection of cardboard boxes ...... one day, I will sort it out.  Clearing the clutter off the work bench would be a useful first step.  My tidy gene is missing.

Only one day to purge the shed?  You can't have opened any boxes or had a "keep in case" pile.

For me my day was spent putting the door handle and trim back and mirror back on the Z3 after having the passenger door resprayed due to the local foxes damaging the door then the gearstick fell apart but luckily I already had a NOS BMW one knocking about which was fitted..

Last week I changed the seat rubbers and repaired the electric seat motor with a tap of a hammer so now it's back looking and driving as good as new and will be taking it for a short break down to the new forest.post-9282-0-62271500-1466631587_thumb.jpegpost-9282-0-73716800-1466631625_thumb.jpegpost-9282-0-55426400-1466631659_thumb.jpeg

Also the gearstick fell apart on the smart car the other day and luckily I found a secondhand one on eBay for £8... I don't know why all the sudden I'm replacing them on my cars.
