My hunt for a Mk2 Golf ended on Monday :)

To say i'm happy with it is an understatement, it's in fantastic condition, I know the suspension and wheels won't appeal to a lot on here, but I think it suits them. It seems to be great on fuel, and I've not stopped grinning every time I drive it - it's an absolute weapon with the 1.8 20v Turbo conversion. Power steering model too so it's actually nice to drive around town.

Verdict - Well chuffed :D

I assume the Ronals are 15"? I think they all are. They just look bigger than mine.

These are mine on the Felicia before all the laquer fell off (the Felly not the Ronals).

Mine have the Ronal inscription which might make them look smaller as they break up the surface. I think they are the perfect size. Big (and wide) enough    to make a noticeable difference to the handling but any bigger looks silly on a small(ish) car. Lovely looking Golf too by the way.

That's lovely! More photos and info required!Java green? Prices of mk2s seem to have spiralled since I sold my old mk2 GTi running a VR6 lump six years ago and even scruffy examples seem to be strong money.

Nice sunny day here so let's see how this gets on with getting a couple of decades' worth of dirt out of the Volvo seats

Let us know how that goes. I have about six years' worth of horse-related stains that could do with removing....

Cheers for the updates on the history! The aux belt looks in perfect condition so the timing belt would probably be fine however I don't like playing roulette with a car that's worth keeping.

Sadly HBOL was useless as it was showing a different engine. Someone on the Facebook page sent me the right picture over tea time and I finally realised what I'd done wrong, all back together now. Its a really weird route that passes through a slot in the engine mount.

Its always with a sense of shame that I admit defeat on a job but if I continued I would have made it almost impossible for someone else to get the bolts out. Its booked in next Thursday at the same place that welded it to have the belt changes. Its a Gates kit so hopefully the water pump should last!

Totally agree it's not worth the risk. Every car I've had if I'm keeping it more than a few months etc, received a full cambelt change. Even my £150 Escort Mk4, which was probably one of the most roughest looking cars I've owned!

Gates should be fine, I'm pretty sure the previous kits were Gates too. I think the only reason the pump failed, was because the one kit supplied had a plastic impeller. So worth checking that out perhaps before hand.

Fairly well, I'm bound to say. No before picture because I am unintelligent and it was embarrassingly minging. It's been off the road nearly a year and outside under trees for the first six months of that, so it's going to take some cleaning up before trying for an Mot. The driver's seat will receive a second go but I'm impressed how much cleaner it looks after one application. (other stuff might well be better, this was on offer in B&M yesterday)

I've come to the conclusion that nothing works better than a wet vac. Everything else just moved dirt around or not at all. It's grim what a wet vac will pull out.

EDIT

For a spray on bottle that worked well I think @Amishtat

Haven't got one but I'd like to try it, that must be the best way to really get the shit out of the fabric. I was concerned I'd just be grinding it further in doing it this way but it's not come up too badly. The water in the bucket I rinsed the brush and sponge in was absolutely fucking rank though..This is a job I've been meaning to do since I've had the car.

Rugdoctor out of Tescos for a day.  Could do some other jobs.

Get a spray bottle that's empty, I filled it up with liquid detergent and hot water. Got all the seats dampened an hour before I attacked it with the rug doctor so as to soften the grease and dirt.

Do it over a week of good weather and let the windows down to dry itself out.

It took me about an hour of vaccing the Primera to get it very very clean. Tbf, it wasn't bad to begin with, I just had a rug doctor there to use when I got it.

I've just driven @yes oui si's BX home and it's got LEDs everywhere.  They're painful and horrible and horrific.  Yuk.

Also, pretty sure they're brighter than the headlights

I don't mind them at all- it's one of those reversible things I can always change back if I want to. I'm keeping all the bulbs in the glovebox as they're fine and work, I just wanted something brighter in there. I will say, though, the LEDs will suit the boot a lot better than the cabin.

I'll happily fit LEDs to brake lights and rear fog lights to anything with incandescent type bulbs .

Sadly with modern lights you need to go a bit brighter to stand out.  I'd consider it a safety upgrade

My old Aerodeck had LED sidelights, reversing lights, interior lights and a few other bits. The sidelights were naff so I put them back to incandescent, but the dark interior and reversing lights really benefitted from the LEDs.
Besides, someone had glued the interior light shut.

I haven't put any LEDs on the outside, just the inside which is easily accessible. When bulbs start burning out I may consider LED replacements.

Filled the BX with petrol and it made 36MPG on this run. That's probably due to all the idling it did yesterday, as well as the average 75 or so I did on the A303.

i should have stayed in bed this morning,

when we got up, it was lovely outside, so, i says, "come on, lets go for a run in that little car", Kerry had been to work in it on Tuesday, and reported that it was running "fine".

so we went and got the mini, its started up, the odd cough now and again, but nothing to worry about.

we had planned to run over to Scarborough, then up the coast to Whitby, and then along to home, just because.

well we got to Staxton roundabout outside of Scartborough, and that occasional missfire was getting worse, so we turned and started back.

cough, cough, the car would loose power, then sort itself out, only for the same thing to happen a few moments later.

so one minute it was running great, then maybe 1/2 a mile later it was stuttering to a halt, then it would be kinda ok.

this went on all the way back, and when we made it onto the drive, it was a relief, the car would tick over, but then start buggering about under load. and there was a strong smell of fuel, so i dunno what's wrong, other than its something to do with the carb, maybe some shite has gotten somewhere where it should not have!

well we headed for home, with Kerry driving, we got within 3 or 4 miles from home she drove over a speed hump which was followed by a loud crack, a scraping sound and a pop.

yes, we had broke a spring, and popped a tyre, a good one too, a bridgestone with plenty of tread on it.

BLOOD MARVELOUS.

luckily we do have a dustbin lid spare wheel in the Toyota, and after putting that on in place of the fooked one, i was able to get my folks to come and get me, so i could get the Rover while Kerry got recovery sorted,

so now that Toyota is sat on Kerrys drive, broken, along with the mini, which is also broken.

told you i should have stopped in fookin' bed this morning!

First time I've seen one here. Ever. Not common in suburbia, admittedly....

If it keeps on coming back, I'll name it Alan.

Definitely a shiter's weekend.

Out of the house early-ish to collect a second hand shed, which put up a bit of a fight to get dismantled, loaded up and dragged home behind my father-in-law's aging C5 Estate.

Then, buoyed by the fact the shed seemed to be better than I'd expected, I got on with my list of automotive alements...

IMG_20210501_171111.thumb.jpg.afe71423e68e131cd9ba29fdd93b67c9.jpg

The S40 gets a front brake service and the discs de-scaling.

The Kuga finally gets the new discs and pads it's been waiting on to cure the steering shake when braking, it's also treated to a quick wipe over with Demon Clean Pink Gloss Spunk™ ready for pictures.

The V70 gets another engine mount as when I replaced them all years ago, I fitted a poly bush to the front mount and it made it shake like a shitting dog. D5 volvos do not like poly bush engine mounts.

I also did an injector leak off test as the starting has gotten a bit laboured. I regard this as inconclusive, perhaps @Barry Cadecould offer an insight?

First, aging C5s have got quite appealing!

V70s and S40s have always been appealing, but I apparently don't understand how to test for injector leaks as I know* that V70s have five cylinder engines, you have six piss bottles so I assume my knowledge of testing is incomplete. I note there is piss on only five bottles though. Maybe the sixth is for Swedish monkey fart.

Anyway, I hear a certain grey German family wagon might be heading your way come January after all?

Yes, most leak off test kits come equipped for up to 6 cylinders.

In this case we have connected to 5 cylinders and I would be expecting to see one injector with a higher level in the bottle than the others to show it is dumping fuel down the return.

Yes the grey wonder wagon may still find itself heading this way, we shall see what the tide brings!

In this pic the first on the left has the most, but I'm sure you have actual data!

If you can save the old veedub from its next mot then fantastic.

Prevois owner will look for a Vivaro or sibling to convert to a live-in, she was hoping to take an 11,000 kg test or whatever that class is (I can't remember the exactities) and get a lorry but covid lockdown means she can't do that just now. Either way the Touran has been a faithful companion on her travels.

With the BMW E28 now sold, my Mini search is in full swing.

It seems that Classic Minis around at the moment is either priced correctly and disappears quickly or overpriced and hangs around with owners not wanting to budge. Went to message someone that listed a car earlier to view tomorrow, to find it had sold a few hours later.

Because of this, I'm having to be relatively un-picky on what I want now. Main criteria now is not another big welding project for this year and road legal (MOT or exempt)! Ideally carb and not SPI or MPI though as I'll miss not having a choke or carb to tinker with. Also ideally not ages away from MOT/tax exemption, as it would be nice to be able to drive into the Bristol CAZ for free.

In other news, the MGB is hesitating when accelerating. Pretty sure it didn't do this before I gave it to the classic MG specialist for a service. But can't say for sure.

Going to have a fiddle with the carbs on it tomorrow and see if I can improve it. Hopefully just needs thicker dampener oil or something straightforward. Especially want to get it sorted as I'm all planned and looking forward to go to the Haynes Museum pre-80s Breakfast Meet next weekend. It's an hours drive and I don't want to miss it!

Numbers 2 and 3 look like they're not getting enough. Alternatively, 1, 4 and 5 are getting too much.

1, 4 and 5 are the most consistent, though this could be a coincidence.
