^^^ That's grim! Is it based on the Hustler kit car?

I had no idea that this thread existed.

I can follow up @Jim Bell's hustler from the OP with its twin, spotted in North Berwick last August:

I'm trying to find a picture online or elsewhere of the ice cream vans that frequented my road when I was young.

We had Geraldo "Top Ices" who played Popeye. He was an independent whose patch was the Singlewell, Never Farm and Kings Farm area of Gravesend and sold the products of L. Papa & sons ice creams & gelato. Had one of those old Commer jobs well into the 1990s.

The local Franchise was Tonibell. Various rammel, speciality - pink cow on the roof of the van.

Another independent was "Jack the Ripple".

Incidentally Tonibell are still going, and looking out for vintage ice cream vans to restore. https://www.tonibell99.co.uk

Damn this thread is perfect. Amused me much more than it should have. I didn’t realise it was an old one until I’d got all the way through it, so apologies to folks that you are getting reaction responses to 4 year old posts.

dont know if anyone previously translated the text or not before, so excuse me if someone has done so!

Nice to see this on a dull day in Ealing. Diesel too. Did not purchase anything - because it was a dull day. I’m struggling to remember where those rear lights come from.

A good friend of mine skippers a super yacht in the South of France. The harbour they frequent is serviced by an ice cream boat. Namely a very fast 36 foot rib piloted by an equally tasty blonde. Ice cream deliveries are 25 euros a go. If the guests buy ice creams for themselves, it is customary to get some for the crew as well. Therefore a simple delivery to just one yacht can easily net her 250 euros. He said that when sales were slow, she would whip off the top of her designer bikini and make sure to apply a good portion of sun tan lotion (in full view of everyone). This action would normally result in lots of radio traffic and calls for her to visit other yachts. He reckoned in the high season she was doing 5K a day which should keep up the repayments on her 100K boat and designer swimwear.

How the other half live.  I can barely even afford a "99" from my local vendor when he drives round.

Also, I spotted this one in another thread on here recently - still in service near Dublin.

I thought the hideous beast had to be a one-off vehicle, then after I posted the above photo on Facebook a mate sent me a pic of this one in Wolverhampton!

Does anyone have more info on them?

My mam used to do similar at the chip shop.

Whitby/Cummins conversion on the Austin/Morris FG 'threepenny bit' chassis. Only a few built, using a small petrol engine at the rear to drive the whippy machine.

I bloody knew someone would say that.  Given his incredibly unkempt state, I don't think I'd buy any food off him to be honest.

Slightly off topic but recently discovered the place I met my wife.  She plied me with free ice cream until I could no longer resist.

She worked here:

In the ice cream cabin.  That was in about 1964.

That must have made quite a dent in the cabin's profits....
