V 45 in Durham today on a Bentley.  Rather disappointed that Winston Churchill wasn't driving it.

Churchill got a Land Rover for his 80th birthday, it had an extra wide passenger seat for him as he was chauffeured about.

The plate supposedly stood for “United Kingdom & Empire”.

The plate just happens to be  Kent registration and, as Churchill lived in Kent, it is just a coincidence that it supposedly means a load of bollocks.

Hence the word "supposedly".

@LightBulbFun Could you use your DVLA skills to help out this couple?

"We are incensed that we are to lose our treasured car registration and it is seriously affecting our mental health"

It sounds like they are really suffering which is saddening 😢

their best bet is to just not let go, raise all manner of hell, the DVLA do have an official complaints department and procedure that goes quite the way and yeah getting it media and MP attention is probably a good shout, and if they really care, I would seek a solicitor and threaten legal action (if nothing else to recuperate the "admin cost" that they would incur having to physically change their number plates and tell their insurance company etc)

but sadly fundamentally the DVLA can just withdraw numbers if they so chose, which they will do if for example you have a personal number you bought from them that you keep purposefully miss-spacing/manipulating the screw positions on for example

but I am quite surprised they have done this so retroactively however, especially as it does not appear the owners of the plate where being antagonistic with it, if it gains tractions and blows up in the Media, it might well shake the confidence of the number plate market, people might not bid as much on numbers if a precedent like this is being set of the DVLA just nuking your number/investment like that after nearly 30 years just because it was suddenly deemed as offensive , especially as you cant predict the future and find out what might become offensive,

really ironically or well hypocritically in this particular case BFxxxx and WCxxxx have been issued as age related plates by the DVLA, however these plates where never issued in period because they where deemed too offensive (BF=Bloody fools and WC=Water closet)

the sensitivities of the the authoritative bodies over time are rather amusing for example registration marks containing "AWC" and "UWC"  was explicitly never issued in period, but POO was!

along similar lines however I have always wondered if PEN15 got nulled by the DVLA in the same way that Rover plate has been?,  the only thing is PEN15  was issued in period and was last on BMW or something such last i checked on it, but it was not then or now on a vehicle, so it might just be on retention, but again I do wonder if the DVLA withdrew it, however I wonder how much that would be valued at? since that was not a number bought from the DVLA, but one genuinely issued by a pre DVLC local office, and then later robbed off of the vehicle it was originally issued to

Penis used to belong to to a racing driver (Steve parish rings a bell) loads of WC plates were issued it was a Dagenham plt quite a few 60'S ford press fleet cars carried them.

All of which is beside the point. If DVLA think N14GAS is offensive, then they need to explain why - because unless someone deliberately sets out to see something in it that isn't there - it just isn't. If you try and make a word out of it, it spells NIAGAS or NIA GAS. Which I don't see anything wrong with.

If it was N16 or N19 they might have a point, but it isn't.

At the very least, they need to be refunding the original purchase price and all costs involved in the new plate fitment.

Pretty obvious why DVLA aren't keen on that plate. It should never have been released.

it is seriously affecting our mental health

BBC Two - Shooting Stars, Series 7, Episode 3

Give over. I wouldn't want to be driving around Bristol (or anywhere else) with a number plate that at a glance could read that word. Plenty of inoffensive GAS alternatives on the DVLA site - pick one, make DVLA pay the costs and get on with your life 🤣

As sad as it sounds I am a plate spotter and never yet posted in this thread - although the page before this, my photo of QTR 1 was found online and used here as a reference, which is quite cool! (In a nerdy way). Anyway, here's an internet friendly plate I was following the other day

Love how DVLA spout how messing with plates to make them read differently is illegal & my get them confiscated , then advertise them as spells this & that for silly money.

Tasty classics is about to cube a Granada with a plate that says cock. Figured it would be good for a farmer or other such keeper of poultry.
