Six Cylinders Motoring Notes - a Workshop Day Today

In another life, I worked on Lancias full time.  It was not a whole lot of fun.   I no  longer have all the parts info, but if it helps Quinton Hazell listed one throttle cable, QTC 4191 for all RHD Betas and Trevis, all engine sizes, except the injected ones.

IIRC the Lancia supplied cables were two slightly different lengths, but would more or less interchange.  I don't think there is a direct Fiat equivalent -  124, 132 etc. would have a different pedal end fitting.   I'm not sure what the LHD cable was like, but the length may be critical as there isn't a lot of space.

TBH the Trevi was fairly underwhelming when new, apart from the dashboard.  A Beta saloon with a hatchback would surely have been a more useful product.

If the 124 is the same as the Lada it wouldn't have had a cable, but some Heath Robinson collection of rods, pivots and linkages which change the direction.of travel something like eight times between the pedal and the carb.  The Lada arrangement was madness and quickly explained why there was about 3" of dead travel in the pedal...

Ironically that pedal was the single biggest headache I had to work around during the injection conversion.

I was thinking 124 Sport which certainly had a cable and is still available.  Cant remember what the set up was on my 124 Estate, but it had less in common with the Lada than might be expected.

The Ladas had different engines so I guess the cables needed to be different.

I think the socket on the cable end is (or can be) a standard Weber part.  The other end is a bush which fits over a horizontal pin at the top of the pedal with a retaining circlip.

I'm sure QTC 4191 is obsolete, but that's the reference.

The Lancia OEM part no. for the Trevi/Beta RHD throttle cable is 82325461 and the "Lancia Wellness Center" in South Africa has three of them, albeit they may be s/h:

Might be worth an email in Felix's direction if D&G have no luck with the generic cable approach.

Six years ago!

I still have not got over the fact @Mr Livered of this Forum gave away a whole working Mercedes Benz and I was first to put up my hand for it.

Last year it had two issues one was the heater did as it pleased which mostly meant it roasted you and the central locking would not work from the driver’s door that was a pain. After some DIY failed attempts at repair even changing the Duo valve, I sent to a Mercedes Specialist in Princess Risborough who I had used for many years on W124s. It dragged on and the car run out of MOT but reduces work load due to covid got it to the top of the pile. Heater is fixed, it turned out to be the replacement valve I had fitted was duff and after a few jobs including a bit of welding the MOT is done. We are just waiting for a replacement central locking vac pump to arrive to finish the job.

He's has a good bit of dough out of my colleague and his awful modern!

But it does have 2 pins in the driver's door trim and when I asked Mr Livered what they are there for he said he did not know as they were the when he got the car!

I test drove an XM of Roger Bradford’s once that also had a couple of pins in the same place. Odd!

windscreen washer adjustment pins- blue= front, black= rear ?

In the case of my Saab there was one there to keep it quickly to hand to clear the repeatedly clogging windscreen washer jets.

After my daughter was somewhat heavy handed with the Jingling atv last year I've had the engine and gearbox at my house.

A chap I know managed to weld the alloy cases back together so as the weather is rubbish today I took over the dining table.

First job was trying to clean it up, I started off with a pot of soapy water and an old toothbrush but soon gave up and used the shower (it's lucky that my girlfriend lives elsewhere).

Next job was making a gasket, as it's a Chinese vehicle I saw no harm in using Aldi packaging cardboard.

Rub the outline on.

 

Cut it out

 

Bolt it on followed by the gearshift mechanism.

 

Best put the other side back together too.

 

CVT bit back on

Check the cover still fits, need to find a bigger bit of card to make a gasket for this.

My experience is cardboard gaskets never last very long retaining oil. 

I have a roll of gasket paper, pm me your address and I will send you some. Tell me the size you need to do the cover as well as I have plenty to do that as well.

I have found that dry cardboard gaskets do soak up the oil and leak after a while. But if you coat both sides in a thin layer of grease or, better still, petroleum jelly they seem to seal much better and last much longer. Incidentally, if you need petroleum jelly for this sort of thing you don't need to buy expensive medical-grade stuff like Vaseline, you can buy commercial stuff much cheaper. I bought a massive tub of it for less than a small tub of Vaseline.

CatsintheWelder is coming over that weekend to fix up the Jingling and no doubt exercise the mopeds!

I understand from when I first talked about opening the Field of Dreams there is concern about Covid-19 and if you can protect yourself sufficiently in our field. I would say yes, in practical terms there is unlimited space and plenty of room to stay 2m apart. If you are not comfortable putting on work gloves and touching shared equipment don’t. You could work solo on something of yours or ours with your own tools. Or just stand 2m away and drink your own tea.

I don’t know if the 6 limit is still going to be in place after the 4^th July but I am thinking with four days that’s 6+6+6+6 =24 visitors over 4 days. Also I am thinking if we divide the site into 4 zones say the yard, approach, camping field and orchard there could be 6 in each socially distancing.

I believe camping will become acceptable again after 4^th July and there is plenty of space to pick your own spot away from others.

There is one composting toilet on site with a plastic seat and we will provide wet wipes so you can keep it clean. There is also a long hedge line if you wish is stay away from our Dunny!

We will not be providing any snacks/food/coffee/tea/cups, but there is mains water and a camping stove with kettle if you want it.

Given the Covid situation please let me know if you are coming to see us. Usual thing for route planning purposes aim for Buckingham and if you are attending but not been before or forgotten PM me as I don’t give the address out on open forum.

The Citroen CX needs its fuel pump and headlights fitted. Then there is the job of throwing away the nasty plastic wheel trims that somebody vandalised it with @Talbot

My pet project is getting the cylinder bearing changed on our Hayter Condor mower so I can stripe the camping field.

We have lots of things to do like start the tractor that needs its inhibitor switch cleaned to move the tipping trailer to a new position. The more things that are started and moved the better. We have field mopeds to play on. There is room to kick a football about if that is your thing.

You can stay an hour or a week just let us know and PM me if you have any questions.

Was yours specified with alloys, or did it have steels plus moon discs?

Happy to work on something simple, the tractor looks more my kind of thing than the CX...although I’m sure even I could put a headlight in one.
