Another unexpected visitor to Chez Silver last weekend. A near neighbour just round the corner, an American guy now living over here, who had not previously owned a classic car, bought this 1981 Mini Clubman estate about 6 weeks ago. It appears to have been restored fairly well, though certainly not perfect, and has a 1275 Metro engine in it. He wanted to have a good look at the condition of the underside and also see if he could find some mounting points for rear seat belts as he has a son who travels in the back, so I offered him the use of my drive and ramps. The electrics are a bit suspect so I also helped him fix the hazard flashers and the interior light. It is perfectly useable but he is slowly tinkering with it to fix some of the minor niggles.

There are NO rear seat belt mounting points on any mini built before about 1995.
And definately not on any clubman or estate.
A bloke I worked with in 2010 was on the small project team at Longbridge that did the design, testing and introduction of various safety upgrades, including rear seat belts, and side impact bars inside the doors.
That's not to say they can't be fitted. But for them to work in a crash, the clubman estate probably needs a rolls cage for them to be attached to. (probably)

I like the term "Sixfire" by the way. Much nicer than Chris referring to it as "Gitfire", which conjures up images of a miserable old man bursting into flames. And all six cylinders did fire eventually!

From Facebook: Unfortunately my beautiful mk1 Mondeo was stolen from a car park in Winchester at some point over the last few days. The only evidence left in situ was broken glass on both sides of the parking space, suggesting that the lovely individuals smashed both front windows. I’ve done all I can with Police and the car park owner thinks there is a good chance of CCTV footage, so fingers crossed.

Thanks for the tip @egg. Unfortunately I didn't see your post until this morning and they are now out of stock. Supposedly 66 sold. Fortunately my existing weather strips are not too bad. I did remove them all, scrape off all the moss, clean them up and reshape them as best as I could and they look reasonable now.

I have now driven the Peugeot 404 on the road.
With the help of @Zelandeth we changed the cracked fuel hoses, replaced the filter and found the reason for it was sucking air bubbles last time. The top of the fuel pump was loose and a simple tighten solved that problem.
Then our troubles began as it would not start, we did all the usual things like cleaning up the distributor cap and still no go. To remove the spark plugs we went home to get my special thin walled, deep box spanner and it was only later we found the one @Harriytaithad thoughtfully left in the boot.
It turns out the spark plugs were wet with petrol and we had to toast them over the camping stove, a squirt of easy start and it coughed into life. We refitted the missing headlight and I took it for a test drive, only 4.1 km but enough to convince me it was capable and safe to drive on the road.
Next week Zel is going to have a look at the electrics for me as they are still a bit hit and miss.
The big question is when you switch it off why will it not restart without a 5 minute pause?

  25. Thanks
