Shep Shepherd
First car was a Wartburg Knight in 1982, which was 7 years old. Suppose a modern equivalent would be a Proton Gen-2 saloon? Or a Peykan
trigger
Back in 1997 i had this 1984 Nova Swing as my first car. My First Car, 1984 Vauxhall Nova 1.2 Swing by Trigger's Retro Road Tests!, on Flickr So i guess i'd be bombing around in a 1998 model one of these, what a depressing thought. Mind you a 13 year old Corsa still seems better then a 13 year old Nova.
CIH
M first car in 2001 was an '89 Golf CL 1.3 4-speed. I guess now it'd be a '99 mk4 or some such. Eugh. Next up for me was a rusty Silvia 1.8 Turbo. Another 1984 car (a fine year) although this one hadn't faired all that well as looked like someone had turned it into the ultim8 gr8 for driftin drift slag. In actual fact I had no knowledge of drifting in 1996 and it was just a genuine 100% organic knackered old banger. I think the s12 Silvia was the last one to be official sold in the UK so getting a more modern one for a replacement is going to be too hard to find or too expensive so I guess I need to plump for a Nissan 200sx. You still see the odd one of these for decent money that hasn't had it's diff welded solid or it's carpet and seats torn out. Correct, more or less. The direct descendent @ 11 years old would be an S15 Silvia (yours being an S12); We never got the S15 in the UK offically so go back a couple more years and it's the S14;
Pillock
Passed in 1997 and got my first car in 1999, a VW Beetle of 1973 vintage. 26 years old. So, the equivalent now would be a 26 year old Beetle:
Lukas
My first car in 2002 was this Pajero from 1994: so this would become this one now: Urgh!
STUNO
My first car was a 1939 Ford Prefect...that was in 1964, so it was 25 years old. 25 years ago it was 1986 so what would I buy now if I was 17 again ?then the brain clicked in. The car I drive now is 27 years old It seems I have not improved, but a nice SD1 v8 is a huge advance in driving pleasure.
Futuramic
In 2006 I bought my first car. An 11 year old Vauxhall Corsa, like this: A 1.2 8 valve "GM Family 2" or whatever the hell they were. Cambelt, single point injection, catalyst and electronic distributor that broke a lot. Utterly hateful thing. Thank god I'm tenacious; the equivalent of losing one's virginity to Thora Hird. I knew that better cars existed and one day I would have such a thing. So that would mean, were I to pass today, I would buy an 11 year old Vauxhall Corsa. These only came with the 1.2 EcoTec 16 valve; rather superior to my 50 BHP unit. For equivalent naffness it would have to be the 1 litre three cylinder. Although with petrol prices as they are; such superminis are now worth millions of pounds (probably)so the first car I could actually afford to buy would probably be a Lincoln Navigator. boobydoo
First car was a Wartburg Knight in 1982, I'm impressed! Utter shite from the off! Nice one! Not sure about the Proton being the equivalent though.......far too good!

Gompo
In 2000 I had a 24 year old Escort 1.1 in white, so theoretically it'd be something like this: ..Although there is no way in hell it'd have a roof rack. Cheers for pic Brammy..
Richard
My first car was a 13 year old Mk1 Escort 1300XL 2 door for £75. I suppose the equivalent now would be a Mk6/7 Escort on an R or S plate- the ageing process didn't really slow down on Escorts the way it did with most cars. First legal car was an 8 year old Chrysler Sunbeam 1.6 GL. The Sunbeam was a bit of a dead end but its descendants by marriage would be the 2-series Peugeots. A late 205 would be about right. My next car was a 9 year old Viva 1300L Estate. The Viva wasn't much of an estate really, I think the equivalent now would be a mid-1990s Astra hatch. The car I learned on was a 11 year old Volvo 244, I think the 16 year old 940 I drive now is a pretty close match.
Negative Creep
Back in 1997 i had this 1984 Nova Swing as my first car. Oooh snap. Mine had a passenger mirror and a sunroof though

Conrad D. Conelrad
My first car in 2005 was a 16 year old Fiesta MK3 A 16 year old Fiesta today would be... uh, a Mk3
theorganist
My first car in 1992 was an 1984 Renault 5TL. It was bright Yellow with a Grey Hammerite bottom third, unfortunately I do not have any pictures. I was well chuffed it had a Five Speed Gearbox, a Sunroof (which leaked) and my friends loved the body roll and the comfy seats with the squishy head rests. Unfortunately it had done hard 94k. We had the headgasket done then the Crankshaft went. Got a £50 engine from the scrapyard which also blew a headgasket! By the time a part exchanged it for an knackered Fiesta the speedo didn't work, the dashboard lighting didn't work, I had wrote of a nearly new Volvo 440 in it (the Renault coming away with a small dent and a scuff to the bumper) and the suspension creaked like a bed in a brothel! I suppose now I would have 2003 Clio which I am sure would be more efficient but not half as much fun (do I really mean fun!).
Luxobarges_Are_Us
I see Wartburgs and Skodas, but it looks like I'm the only shiteist whose first car was a Talbot! 1984 Talbot Samba (in metallic goldish-brown no less!) in 2000. Cost a whopping 50 notes, with MOT but with a dead clutch. Today's equivalent...16 year-old PSA supermini...A nice late 205! However, very soon it got buggered by a stupid garage that fixed the clutch but completely fucked the electrics. Decided to write it off (in the accounting sense, not the insurance one!) and get something a bit comfier...So I ended up with a 12 year old Granada 2.9 that cost 4 times the price I had paid for the Talbot (but included 5 months' MOT and even 20 quid's worth of petrol!). Today's equivalent would be a 1999 Mondeo V6....something like this
rml2345
In 2008 I bought a 2003 dual control Toyota Yaris from a local instructor who was retiring... It would have been dead posh apart from the big dents, scrape, scuff marks and rubbish paint. So now I'd have a... 2006 Toyota Yaris with dual control, big dent, rubbish paint etc.Not very shite I know.
