I’ve had a few different types and it’s interesting to note the configuration of a V engine as the different angles sound different.  Whie we’re at it, there are numerous different types of transmission worth noting. These are all cars.

  • Inline 2-cylinder

  • Inline 4-cylinder

  • 60 degree V6

  • 90 degree V6

  • 90 degree V8  (the proper type)

Transmission types:

  • Manual     4, 5 speed

  • Torque-converter auto   4-speed

  • Twin clutch DSG-type auto    7-speed

  • Electric   (with petrol engine)

I have a feeling this has been done before, but ok:

Single

Upright twin

Triple

Four inline

V4

Five inline

Six inline

V6

V8

I must have a butchers under the hood of Jazz Club.  It's only 1.2, sounds like it might be a triple.  Don't think I've ever had a "Flat" engine.

Inline twin (Ligier Ambra, Chrysler Ypsilon)

Flat twin (assorted Citroëns, DAF 33)

Inline triple

Inline 4

V4 (Saab 96s, Mk1 Transit)

Flat 4 (2 Beetles, 4 Subaru Legacys)

Inline 5

Inline 6

V6

Flat 6 (Subaru SVX)

V8

V12 (Daimler Double 6, Jaguar XJ-S, BMW 750i)

If we're counting motorbikes then add single and V twin to the list.

I'm so sad I've already got a tab on my car owning spreadsheet that covers this, although it is split between owned and driven and further subdivided into orientation:

Owned

Inline 2 - longitudinal

Flat 2 - longitudinal

Inline 4 - longitudinal

Inline 4 - transverse

Inline 6 - longitudinal

V 8 - longitudinal

All of my cars have been i4s.

5 x 8v petrol

1  x 12v petrol

1 x n/a diesel

1x turbo diesel

Never got further than straight sixes (Rover P5 and Triumph 2000)

The only V engined car was a Ford Corsair four cylinder.

Everything else has been  inline four cylinders either sideways or frontways.

I have had a single cylinder diesel boat engine (donker) and currently a twin cylinder diesel.

Further to my previous answer: capacities range from 49cc (single cylinder mopeds by Honda and Mobylette) to 7736cc (the V8 in my last Cadillac, Huggy Bear [RIP]).

I've had petrol, diesel and petrol-hybrid; FWD, RWD, AWD; manual and automatic.

Many inline 4s from 1.1 to 2.8 both petrol and diesel.

Other than  that,

1 flat four (Subaru) and inline 3 , Bini and Peugeot 107.

Sadly no 6,8,10 or 12s.

Many singles (26-197cc) if you count garden machinery.

there is a similar thread here for engines configurations which you have driven :) (where as this thread is for engine configurations you have owned :) )

https://autoshite.com/topic/43691-engine-configurations-what-have-you-driven

as for myself:

single cylinder VIlliers 9E 197cc Aircooled, 1958 Harper Mk6A (I wonder how many people can claim to have owned a single cylinder car :)

Flat Twin Steyr Puch 493cc Aircooled, 1976 Invacar Model 70

I also own a Trailer that was once an AC Model 64 Electric Invalid Tricycle, if that counts for anything LOL which would of been powered by a 72V Brushed DC motor

Actually required more thought than I expected.  When I joined here I had only 3 and two flavours of 4 covered.  Now look at it!

2.  [] Flat twin.  [] In-line.

3.  [] In-line.

4.  [] In-line.  [] Boxer.

5. [] In-line.

6.  [] In-line.

8.  [] V8.

12.  [] V12.

What's the most oddball someone on here has or had?  VW's V5?  Or do we still have somone with a Trojan with that (fascinating) square four contraption of theirs in?  Or any tank owners with something like a Leyland L60 to really shake things up?

Have *driven* a couple of things with a V10, but never owned nor really likely to.  V4 and V6 have nearly joined the fleet a few times but not so far.  Of those a V4 in a Saab would probably be the most likely to appear at some point.  Never going to say never for a rotary either...if an Ro80 popped up at the right price I'd definitely be tempted.

I’ve had -

Transverse in-line 4 petrol

Longitudinal in-line 4 petrol & diesel

Transverse in-line 5 petrol

Longitudinal V6 petrol

Longitudinal V8 petrol

Capacity ranges from a 1300cc CVH engine up to a 7000cc big block V8.

Transmissions all either 4, 5 or 6 speed manual or good old fashioned automatic slush boxes.
