Late registration madness

Registered 14th Dec 07 - so it should be a 57 plate!

DVLA Manufactured year is 2006

MG-Rover says built Wednesday, 19th May 2004 @ 21:59:15 and that it's a 2002 model year.

The mystery is solved though as it also says it's a German Export model so the DVLA have done their usual throw-a-dart-at-a-calendar to backdate the registration to a random year

EDIT: German Export, RHD?

I guess potentially bought in Germany by someone in the British Army, who ordered RHD knowing it'd come home after three years.

What do I win for this 1934 G-prefix Morris then?

DVLA says first registered in March 1990 so I guess it was a barn find with no ID and the work experience kid accidentally issued it with a current reg instead of an age-related one.

MOT records say it was built in 1934, but first registered in 1990. Any bets on how many 'Construction and Use' regulations for 1990 does this not conform to?

All of them?!

Jeez, I know they probably go a little but on autopilot when they're processing paperwork, and they don't have to be interested in cars, but that's quite a substantial mistake.

Just found this thread. My dad's MG TF is a 2006 reg even though it must have been built before Rover went tits up, will have to do the vin lookup thing next time I see him and get the actual dates. Maybe one of the last (proper) ones?

If you know the reg you can get a VIN from various places and head over to the MG Rover site for the build info

Can't remember the full reg and don't think I even have any pictures of it to hand. Seeing the folks at the weekend though so I'll show my dad how to look up the build info then, I'm sure he'll be curious to see.

"This car was manufactured in 1979 / 1980 and one of the last to be built in Abingdon after the Kingsbury plant closed in 1979. As confirmed in the article in the magazine, it remained un-sold until 1986"

Saw an 04 plate Omega somewhere near Leith yesterday. White and quite rusty, probably an ex-rozzer car.

white 62 plate Vauxhall Combo C spotted in Burton upon Trent on the 3/8/18! (sorry no photo) also previously saw a couple of 61s but no 12s yet (if any were even registered)

I saw an 08 plate MGF the other day. Definitely threw me that one.

I saw a recessed headlight Metro on an E plate today, I'm sure they all got flush headlamps long before then.

Posted

I can't remember the years or anything but after the Mini Metro there were two different fronts on them depending on spec.

Posted

Yeah. I had an f reg misery spec one with recessed headlights.

There were a few J reg Austin Metro vans and hatchbacks about, ex Jersey/Guernsey, IIRC. Think the cars got flush lamps and the commercials stayed with the recessed ones but I could be wrong on that, too. So even more late reg madness, as the Rover Metro was launched on a G plate.

Talking of G plate and late reg madness, check out this Strada that tul66 used to own, which he posted in the shite picture thread:

Quite often any scruffy vehicles on a really late registration are merely on their way to a good old Bilking.

The story of the G reg Strada is; it was a Rome registered car which was brought over to the UK and registered around 1990. I bought it from someone in Twickenham when I was working in dat der London around 1998. I had it for around 5 years or so.

An F as opposed to a TF? I suppose an F front bumper and lights is probably easy to do on a TF (Why would you though)

I worked for a Skoda main dealer years ago and in late 2001 we were contacted by the manufacturer to say they had "located" three unregistered Felicia 1.3 Classic's at the docks, bear in mind that the Felicia's replacement the Fabia had been on sale for three years at this point, and did we want them?

We had all three, at some knock down price, had to get every one SVA tested as the type approval had expired (this is from memory) before we could get them registered and sold all three in one weekend to some old established Felicia customers.

So somewhere in the system there will be 3 x 51 plate Felicias knocking about. Well maybe there will be.

Facelift mk1, and I don't think the second generation came in until '56 plates.

No photos as I was driving, but saw a Mk6 (?) Escort on a Y prefix plate this morning, which seemed pretty late for one of these. Must have been giffer owned as it was sporting what looked like Zodiac hubcaps.

Posted

Y is possible, it's as late as they go. The Escort Van went on until 52 plate when the Transit Connect came in.

Posted

There's always something bumpf trotted out about how the X and Y plate Escorts were built by Jag employees or something. Just thought I'd throw it out there without any fact checking at all, that seems a lot of hard work.

There used to be a y plated ford escort finesse in estate flavour round these parts. Road tax was very high on it. £280 rings a bell. Not seen it in a while. My van was a 52 plate

Posted

more than Jaaaaaags are built by ex escort builders ... given halewood passed from mainstream FoMoCo to JLR at around the time the Escrot was on run out

I don't think that is such a bad thing.

It was the design of the car that was utter crap. I don't recall build quality being an issue.

Like it makes any difference. Jaguars weren't handbuilt by master craftsman or anything.
