The Roof Rack Thread

Recommended Posts

The one stop thread for all things roof rack.

Have a car with a roof rack? Post pics.

See a car with a roof rack? Post pics.

Roof rack and roof bar discussions also welcomed.

I'll start with this Volvo 340 variomatic that I once owned. It's resplendent beneath a Paddy Hopkirk sports rack, which lowered mpg and made a bad noise at speed. Never ever carried anything on it.

In my opinion there are two things that a car must have in order to be useful; a tow bar and a roof rack.

Have a photo of my Favorit being used to put fence posts up at the stables as an illustration of how even shite cars are useful if you can strap shit on top of them.

I saw this in tour signature, but no updates in your thread since 2022 on it. What’s going on with it?

Can i interest you in importing LHD one with the right name 101/Skala 55? Make an epic collection thread and all that? 😄

My best mate when I was a kid, his dad had an Orange Zastava. I’ve wanted one ever since. But importing one is too much for me these days, however, if one arrived here 😁

Nope

Not got them.

Have a major want for a pair of just rails to repurpose.

Still looking for a random, free, spectacularly cheap pair.

Pic of what I have and what I would like.

Thanks to @Dick Longbridge

This was an old Desmo rack that my dad stopped using when he bought a new Renner 14 in 1977 and hoarded away in the garage for several decades.  It was on the XR2 partly because that was an easy way of storing the thing, but after I eventually sold the car I stuck the rack on eBay and some mentalist in Japan was the highest bidder.

Dad had a Desmo estate car roof rack for his Mk5 Cortina estate and later had GM roof bars for his Mk3 Carlton, which can be seen here on my Senator on waking it from a 15 year sleep:

I do like cars with built in roof racks

Personally, I don't like 'em, but I did have a pair of clamp on ones which assisted me in moving all my stuff from Essex to Northamptonshire years ago. Looked pretty funny with my ironing board strapped on top at least

No pic so have one I took at a show instead

Some truly inspirational stuff here, especially the Renault 4 with the roof tent.

I chopped and welded an old van rack for the Laplander cab a couple of weeks ago.

Also doubles as a handy lifting frame.

Had to drive quite gently back from the shop with this lot (which I screwed together and to a battern in case of emergency stops).

I posted this 2 years ago in the ambitious towbars thread. Now there is an appropriate thread I make no apologies for the re-post.

This one's mine. Originally graced a long wheel base sprinter then cut down lengthways and widthways to fit a lwb connect before being chucked in the lid of my Berlingo. I further lopped some length off as the front overhang was ridiculous. Fits 8x4 sheets nicely amd has been used extensively with a large variety of shite. Ill dig out some loaded pics. Some even I would deem ridiculous though as yet haven't fallen foul of the law.

I fancy some climbing wall grabs on the boot lid for easy access. Currently just climb up the bonnet when i need to get up top.

Eagle eyed may spot one transit steel and tyre on the passenger seat. Round things don't tie on that well it seems.

Bounced off the front wing and went straight on at the mini roundabout! Slightly embarrassing though could of been worse.

I can’t remember how much I wrote up in my thread, but at present it’s about 80% complete. I did the obvious welding and then found it was down on compression on one cylinder. I’m contemplating it as one to pull out and work on later this year, as I’d like to see it finished.

The famous grey grille base Sierra now owned by @BorniteIdentity used to sport roof bars when with its previous owner.

Great thread this one!

Ive been a connoisseur of roof racks for decades, going back to the early 90's, where it all started for me, with Volvo 240 estates/wagons.

Fast forward to approx 5 years ago, when i had this beast of a rack, fitted to my beast of a 960!......Still got this rack, just waiting for the right Volvo to fit it to once more!
