Chod on Google maps.

Ok, this thread might sink like a stone or it might be just me keeping it going. Am I the only one who spends hours trawling Google maps in obscure places seeing what's about? I mean I tend to start looking at places to visit by train, see if the station looks nice and how close it is to the town centre but whilst I'm there I can't help finding a housing estate or two to see what's parked there.

So as I keep finding stuff I've been taking screenshots so I thought I'd share some. And then on future armchair expeditions I can dump them here to keep them all together.

Because it's me we'll start with some old Škodas. I am actually going to CZ next month to look for old Škodas of the railway variety but if I find any Favorits it'll be a bonus.

A nice pair.

A Favorit estate crossing a bridge

A badly parked Fav with a fuzzed out rear hubcap. Why ever could Google have found this necessary?

Lada, Punto and Felicia.

Felicia in Volvo Racing Blue. A very early one with black hubcaps.

And another in a rather fetching pale blue, not unlike my own Favorit, neither colours I can remember seeing over here.

This is a calender shot. Slightly shonky Felicia on some waste ground near some derelict railway buildings, under a nice tree and parked next to a bin. There must be Škoda joke in there somewhere. This one is actually in Hungary.

And in complete contrast to the above, another Felly in a very grand setting.

And lastly what most people think of when you say old Škoda. With more bins.

Feel free to add your own. Or just leave it to me.

On to Romania now which I have been studying for another trip later next year.

Proper Dacia 1300s are becoming scarce now but fortunately some of the images on Google maps are quite old so I give you a Dacia 1300 (or 1310 or whatever) pickup with a hard top. Possibly refrigerated.

Crew cab!

This is fabulous. Nice Carlton in the foreground (is the Opel still called a Carlton?) But then a row of four Dacias in five cars. I'm not sure what the car in between the Dacias is. It has a flat rear wheelarch like the Carlton but the rest doesn't look like one.

Smart Omega.

Classic Romanian station shot.

At first you might notice the 500 and the orange thing but they are just advertising some restaurant. Look beyond those and some legend thought it would good idea to run a C6 in Romania! We need more people like this.

Two of my favourites locally in Plymouth . They’ve been around for years, and do get used.

And lastly tonight, these are all Muckachevo, south west Ukraine. This is on my list of places to go. There are four trains a day from Debrecen, Hungary's second city, to Muckachevo. They are Hungarian trains using a  standard gauge line. Most of Ukraine uses Soviet broad gauge but there are standard gauge lines from here to both Hungary and and Slovakia. This is because over the years it was part of both the Austro Hungarian empire and Czechoslovakia in the times when the railways were being built. It was only after the war that the Soviets decided to move it over to Ukraine at a time when Czechoslovakia were in no position to argue.

It looks perfectly safe at the moment. Even Putin, mad as he is, doesn't seem to want to bomb anywhere near the Romanian/Hungarian/Slovak borders.

Two Ladas, possibly three. I'm wondering if that generic looking thing behind the blue Lada is one of their modern efforts.

Screenshot_20230801_161832.thumb.jpg.4bfab853625a9e71d9c498c00741552b.jpg

And this looks like a Samara saloon. If it's not, I have no idea what it is. Looks tidy anyway.

Screenshot_20231208_160849.thumb.jpg.b541d187935f458bf2c6a42e5bf7172c.jpg

And I'll finish with this. I've  no idea but we seem to have been transported back to 1975.

Perhaps @martc can identify these?

Thanks for this, the Carlton would have been an Omega. I found my old Jag though:

I also spend hours virtual-cruising around the backstreets at the edge of motoring.

Senegal.  Renaults everywhere

And a few Benzes.

Opel Omega

I'm in Prague at the moment. I've seen a few Skoda Felicias and Favorits but not many

Also quite a few immaculate Jaguar XJ40s but no other XJs at all. In fact the only other Jaguars I've seen are the SUVs and one X-Type

That truck looks to be a MAZ 500 made in Belarus in the 1960s and 1970s.

There's not much left in the cities over there any more, you need to get out in to the sticks, same as anywhere else really. I'm off to Brno next month, at the other end of the country, but it's the same. Take a tram out to the suburbs and have a wander about and there's still quite a lot of them around.

The other thing I'm noticing here in Prague is that parking seems challenging. I've seen so many people have parallel parking scrapes and one even tried to drive away but people stopped him

A few more from Romania that were on my other phone.

More Dacias.

Two here.

I wonder what the dealer network was like in Romania?

My old 318i Touring is still on Google when I was captured in 2016. It used to be on Google twice as I passed the spy car twice on the same day. The other shot, that was about a mile and a half from this one, has been replaced with a newer image now.

That's Google Earth for my house circa 2009. A Renault 19 saloon that went for scrap eventually, my green ZX estate that had a red tailgate after the hrw exploded one day, a white 405 estate someone gave me free which I got through a test and then sold, and a 306 saloon I bought cheaply with hgf, which I put a new head on then sold  to my brother-in-law who ran it for 5 or 6 years. At the back is a totally rotten Saab 96 I was breaking at the time.

Hmm, quite possibly. That's something that would never even have occurred to me. Thanks.

Felicia and mk1 Punto with a superb Favorit high top van.

And quite a line up here. The obligatory Fav and Felicia that you once got in every station car park in CZ, but also a Fiat Brava (or Bravo?), a Vectra and I think a booted Astra F.

June 2009 there's a glimpse of a chappie (and a red Pug down the drive)

image.thumb.png.ff1613ef7628d8cfe7758d34b7ee5f3c.png

There's one further towards Llangurig that had a red Porsche a few years back (currently has a Ford Cargo Horsebox parked in a bog if you know the one - first chod park on the left as you come from Llangurig > Aber, immediately before the first nasty bend. If you are going > Aber have squint down the drive at the other end of the house from where the cars are parked - more stuff down there.
