Newest car with AC I could buy for that kind of money in Romania at the time.

£2000 for a seven year old Twingo GT.

 

Which was a really nice, fun little car... Until I wrote it off.

 

Got more back off insurance than I paid. Most of which I sank into an absolutely shite Bini Cooper R50.

The Capri I bought in Cyprus in 2009.  It was 8,000 euros but was the first one I'd seen on the road, and once I got it back to Paphos, was the only one on the road in that area.  It made me a good few friends over there, so I didn't begrudge it, although it was rather a lot of money.  I traded it plus another thousand for the infamous Miami Blue Granada, which probably ought to have the title, but the Capri purchase was all hard currency whereas the Granada cost me a car I'd already had 18 months out of.  Mind, I shipped the Granada here two years later, so perhaps the cost of shipping pushes it over the edge.  

It's too confusing.  Let's say the winner is the three year old PT Cruiser we bought at the Liverpool Carcraft in 2005.

I'm not including the Motability car/s as we will never own them.

£2000 on my 68 Beetle. Other than that every car has been £0-£400 or so, a couple of the best were completely free.

I loved the Beetle but a life-laundry at the time combined with a lack of storage saw that and my T3 panel van sold, the Beetle at a loss. The guy did lots to it and it turned up at a few shows, then kept popping up on eBay with more and more of the good parts missing. Now MIA which is a shame as it was a really solid car

£2800 on a 10 year old Discovery 2. Four litre V8 with proper multipoint ,oil injected, gas conversion. Fully loaded including screens in the headrests and a Playstation port. Sadly it also had active cornering enhancement. One of the rear pipes sprung a leak and you can only buy them in pairs from Land Rover for lots of money. Hmm, mild steel pipes into an aluminium block bolted to the chassis. Ruined the aluminium block trying to get the rusty steel out of it. Could never get the new pipes to seal properly and it was putting the lights on on the dash so sacked it off at auction.

If I'd known then that you can swap it out for standard suspension and delete the lights I'd probably kept it a few years. Didn't know the right people then who had the equipent to delete the ACE from from system. 

My glamorous assistants Nissan Juke cost me 6 grand but that doesn't count as it's her car. Apparently she is paying me back for it.

I paid £5500 for a 2001 Audi A4 1.9tdi Avant in 2006 at an auction. Two owners and fsh. Put 100k on it. Looked after it. Serviced at an independent specialist. Engine went pop at 201k 7 years later. Still worked out good value, dependable, practical but a bit uninspiring. Just right for me at the time though with a young family.

I decided to make some money back by stripping it for parts. Only time I've ever done this. Hard work and took me months to sell the bits but I made about £800.

1985 Mercedes 500 SEC Lorinser which I still have, paid a whopping (to me) £7250 to scratch a 30 year itch on NYE 2018. It's in good 36 year old condition but has a list of jobs as they tend to, I don't use it a lot as it's 3rd car. Keep threatening to sell but do nothing, it was bought when I have no dependants or debt and a good wage. At last!

This was only slightly more expensive than a 1993 BMW 540i I paid £7150 for in 1999, fabulous car compared to what what I'd owned before but not a clever buy when I had young kids, a mortgage, credit cards, a not marvellous wage. I'm pretty sure quite a few of you recognise that situation!  I owned it for 8 years in two spells, it tried it's best to skint me but no regrets, sold the second time for £650 in 2010. I'd buy it back in a heartbeat.

I paid £7400 for a 2010 Audi A4 Avant in 2015. 

It was very competent but extremely dull. I was pleased with it for an entire 6 months and then I wanted something fast. Swapped it along with a lump of cash for a 2006 Audi S6.

I bought a £540 Primera P12 estate which was slightly more competent and better spec'd about 4 years later. Bit of an eye opener.

I found expensive car ownership to be unnecessarily stressful. You lose the sense of disposability, worry about car park scratches, main dealer service stamps and worst of all you feel ever so slightly committed/trapped

Don't really want to say, but wasted far too much. I've had new cars which depreciated to a third of their purchase price by the time they were three years old. I've had sheds that I have spent many times their purchase price on, before finally giving up. I've bought things back for more than I sold them for and sold things cheap (with an honest description) to see them flipped for a lot more by someone else.

I have skewed priorities and magpie tendencies, so if I liked the look of something, or felt sorry for it, I bought it. I have learned the hard way that running old cars is not always the cheapest option, especially when you hang onto them too long. It's not all about money though as if I really like a car I tend to forgive it for being a bit needy.

Current car is a Fiat Panda, bought new last year for just over £13k, I would probably get about £9k for it now with near 18k miles on it. I have paid more and lost more, it's my money I can be as stupid as I like.

I traded in a 1.3 litre E registered base Cavalier hatch and added £7,000 for (still trying to fit in with the idiotic naming of vehicles on here ) Walter the white car back in 1994 - Walt was 7 years old at the time. He's sat outside at the mo and insured, agreed value for £15,000.

One of my old transits cost the same which is thus far  my top wack for four wheelers. Motorcycles are different mater though this shall remain undocumented encase she ever looks up any of my posts.

Echo others comments but that Mercedes is the dogs bollocks. Proper Miami Vice stuff that is, cruising around with a TEC9 on the passenger seat listening to Phil Collins waiting on a deal with some South American crack dealers, whilst stopping off at phone boxes to ring your ex wife at 11pm at night in an emotionally charged phone call. And it would be raining.

Do company cars count? Well, company funded. 

2018 Mitsubishi Outlander £18 grand. 

The engine is a rattly as A Talbot Horizon but apparently TADTS. 

Drives okay, 50mpg, huge boot. Can't complain. 

AC is currently borked, goes in next week to see what the problem is and if it is under warranty or if it is pants down time. 

Cars I bought myself? £5500 on a Sierra Sapphire in about 2005.

Ive still got it. Not used for a few years. Probably make a few quid when I sell it as it has *that* badge. 😀

Yes, I think that the Caddy I had, this was also necessary when changing the fuel filter. And I struggle and understand why VW and everything from VAG are so highly regarded.

up until recently, i had a rule - never spend more than £2k on a car.  for a long time that served me well, and saw me ususally end up with a sub £500 a year motoring cost all told (except fuel).

then mrs Groovy wanted a mini, and it all went out the window.....  i think im nearly £9k into that one, and it is a good £4k more than the 14 plate focus family car we bought 2 years ago.

Bikes went on the same rule, until the current one at £9k, but ive been buying cheap bikes since day 1 and i fancied treating myself.
