My parents had a 2.2i CD. One of my favourite alloy wheel designs. Piece of cake to wash too like the Citroen ones of that era. Vauxhall did some of the nicest looking wheel designs in the 1980s-90s. I particularly liked the 13 inch 'star' shaped steel wheels commonly found on the Cavalier Commander and police spec Astra mark 3s.

I don't like them but I like the idea I've never seen anything like them. If I'd owned it back in the day I would have binned them but if I owned it now I'd keep them for the interest. I've no idea when the bin/keep crossover date would have been. Nostalgia eh...

The little hubcap type which cover the nuts I find more pleasing, but need to be on the right vehicle. IE not a sceneYo! VW.

In the 'XR3-era' 80s or 90s they'd have been frizbeed right away into the sea  to recreate an early 70s 'flying-saucer' TV scenario.  Hubcaps for 12" wheels spin fast as fuck if you flick them right.

('Old giffer shite, - get some RS 4-spokes or wide Mex steels on there'). 

From maybe early 2000s they may have been kept if the owner was a classic enthusiast and appreciated what he/she had and what was there.

If I'd owned it then I'd have gone for a set of RS alloys. It's why I have Sprint wheels on my Triumph 1300TC (bought in 1995 but I had the wheels long before that on previous Triumphs). Also had SD1 alloys on my Landcrabs, it was the thing to do.

SD1 alloys on a Landcrab, holy fuck, sounds good.  We need pics.

Bet the Rover looked a bit shite after that on Landcrab rims.  (Actually, on second-thoughts maybe not, that's a very interesting idea).

My first Crab, an 18/85S. Best car I ever owned. T'was an auto but the kickdown dropped it into exactly the right rev range and it would take off like the Starship Enterprise going in to warp drive and the Rover wheels with 185/14s would keep it going wherever you pointed it. I completely agree, and utterly disagree. Polished Moon discs are nasty, brushed ones are the best thing ever

Sill-integrity not for discussion in this thread.   (Hmmmm, 'magnet may be faulty').

Interesting period items.  Maybe home made?  (I mean the hubcaps, not the bodywork made of cake).

I remember seeing similar things when I was a lad, usually on Mk2/3 Zephyrs and Zodiacs with other period tacky accessories. I particularly remember some with amber reflectors in the centre. Off to google to find some pics.

When I bought the Laurel back in 2008 it came with these body-coloured full-width trims on steels, quite rare on the 2.4 as most came with alloys:

Datsun Laurel 2.4 (C230)

Still got them in the shed even though I now run ex-240K GT alloys.

The lesser-spec 2-litre models sold in the UK had an unpainted version of the above, but elsewhere they got a smaller centrecap:

c1980 Datsun Laurel C230 (JAE 2004)

Which looked particularly tough on the JDM version with black-painted steels:

1980-ish Nissan Laurel (C230)

I don't know how visible they are here, but going back in time to my first car this Cherry had a Pardat-branded version of a fairly generic trim:

1981 Datsun Cherry 1.2GL 3dr (N10)

couldn’t resist the Savage 500 ad. Always remember in my Mum’s Kays Catalogue it used to say under the listing. “ Not suitable for BLMC 1100, Allegro or Maxi”

I always thought these Triumph Acclaim trims were alloys, but it turns out that I was wrong, they're genuinely quite convincing imo

I've also been a fan of centre caps. 

So much so. I have a set of MK3 Astra Sport steelies with the correct centre cap. Only found on the 1.6 16v's. 

I had to fit them to an Astra I had a while back.

Didn't the CD version of the Acclaim have alloy wheels but they looked exactly the same as the trims?

All Acclaims had the same steel wheels, CDs got plastic trims and 165/70R13 tyres over the standard 155/80s (145/80s on the base spec). I think the bare steelies with the polished hubcaps look better!

I done a search and didn't find mention of them. I believe these hub caps were part of a dealer supplied dress up kit that could turn any bug into a Jeans Beetle. You know, because that is what lots of people wanted to do.  I've never seen them in the wild.

They have fooled me too. :blink:

I'd quite like to source some centre hubcaps for my i10 - if they exist. I think they do for the pre 2014 i10 as other countries got the mega povvo spec with 4 keep fit windows, although I wonder if they would fit my 2018 model. :unsure:

This whhhhhhheeeeellllltrim belonged to 'L' spec Astra mk2s. I think it fitted in well with the 'future shock' aero styling and 'fuck you' front bumper/grille.

This one, on the other hand, was on bASe 'Merit' Astras. It definitely looks worse but I can't describe why or how. 

When you're an eight-year old boy stuck in the back of a MK2 Astra for hours on end, these things matter.
