as far as I know, it is the same 2.2 ctdi engine as the civic and accord. with a bit of luck that might keep the parts cost down, although I'm dreading tomorrow's phone call from the garage.

Probably because everyone* has told you quitting nicotine addiction is hard. It's not, when you think about it all you have to do is *not* do someting.

 

To be fair, although I 'went cold turkey', I only smoked about 20 a day for ten years until the day I stopped.

Same. One day, I just decided I didn't want to smoke anymore. It's all in the mind. That was 18 years ago, and I've not had one craving since.

My father once told me that he could not describe the expression on the specialist's face when my father said casually he could 'start smoking his pipe again' after having a benign but suspicious lump removed from his mouth.

 

That was ten years before I started smoking.

 

 

It's never stopped being a reference though; I was recovering from a cold the other week, and felt myself get to the point of being 'well enough to start smoking again'.

Of course it's not.  My brother being a case in point, he's an expert in giving up smoking as he's done it several times a year, probably for a decade.

 

I do think there's a lot put onto nicotine though we're constantly told (usually by people who sell gum or e-fags) that we 'need help' in giving up nicotine.  Personally I think that's crap - break the habit and don't replace it with something else which might be nearly as bad.  I took up eating bananas as a distraction, which was great because I don't actually like them.

Stopping smoking is easy, you just have to want to stop, I smoked 20-25 a day for 20 years, met a new woman, she told me I stank, she was right, I quit there and then, just stopped, no stupid vape (although they weren't around then) no silly patches and no awful gum, its a smelly horrible worthless habit that has no positive impact on your life whatsoever.

As others have said, the nicotine addiction is easy to break. What is more difficult is the habit. I could go for weeks without even thinking about smoking a cigarette whilst on holiday for example. But back in the garage at home about to start some random job on one of the cars the craving kicked in....

Just a habit/association thing. Yes, all in the mind.

I got the call from the garage about the stricken Crv and it's not good news - diagnostics are showing that the fuel pump is borked, how do I want to proceed ? an aftermarket pump is around £350, genuine honda a horrific £1000+ (he advised against fitting the cheaper aftermarket pump but I can't justify that sort of money on a year old car) he's going to start stripping the old one off and call me later for a decision. Just what I don't need this close to Christmas

 

I've now had to reinsure the civic that was due to go sorn today, more money down the bog.

I wish to god, my wifes mum would quit!! She's on 20-30 a day... and her body is in such  a mess because of it... she's having mini strokes all the time and WILL NOT go to hospital, her dad will not let me drag her kicking and screaming, what a terrible state she is in, there's no conversation with her, she just isn't 'there'! She suffers badly with Angina and is Coughing 24/7, if the missus calls her on the phone you can hear her coughing, and its not just a hack or a cough... it's a proper fit. 

 

We are Literally awaiting "THAT" call.

 

By the way, the excuse not to go to hospital is... yep, she can;t have a fag!

 

She's diabetic too, had a major stroke some years back but relatively got through it and lives to tell the tale, except with these mine strokes she's having...the day is going to come!

Got the Saab back today. The fuel pump was indeed borked. Replacement was £107, plus diagnostics and fitting at £66. Total bill just north of £200 with VAT.

Not bad I suppose given that it's the first FTP in my ownership (a year and almost 20k)

The radiator is burst on Mr C's Leon. it's been losing coolant for a while but it's sped up of late. I ran it this morning and can see it wazzing out the bottom.

£42 for a new radiator isn't bad. I'm proper Christmas broke so I might change it myself to save a couple of hours labour. I can then spend that money on mulled wine and whisky.

Mrs Shrimp has done exactly the same with suger, bread and pasta (well most carbs) she just stopped one day.

 

She does do an on and off diet (that's how it's meant to be) and so far she's lost 4 stone and no longer takes any diabetes medication.

Ok, I'll concede some ground there, but I do think one of the biggest problems is that we've had decades of being told tobacco is addictive and hard to give up. I do think it's worth pointing out that it isn't necessarily so. As others have said, it's as much the habit as anything. I took fresh air breaks in my last actual job, because I was fed up with smokers being allowed to have fag breaks. I'd head off for a little walk. Worked well.

I did. Just stopped. No gum, patches etc. Wish I could start again though, without the health/monetary costs-nothing beats a Marlboro and a coffee to start the day.

Our office had to write an employee charter a few years ago, and I was on the team. Being so pissed off with the non smokers moaning about us smokers having 2 breaks in the morning, 2 in the afternoon I checked the company policy and wrote the fresh air/away from your screen bit into one of our charter things to stop the constant whining. Then everyone acted surprised that no one knew this was a thing, I pointed out the document was written in 2004 (was 2015 by this point) and they all shut up.

Ordered a grand total of ONE Christmas present online and it hasn't turned up. RM tracking number says they're awaiting the parcel from the seller from the 5th.

 

Raised an issue on ebay and they said they'd look in to it, but since it's now the 15th and they won't be back at work until the Monday now (ebay says they're away too), it ain't gonna get here for xmas is it? Requested a refund but I can't see that's gonna go smoothly either.

 

Had to buy another one and sell my soul to Amazon with Prime. I make it my business to give Amazon as little of my money as possible but needs must.
