kerry from the kitchen.....

"come quick!! the washing machine is beeping!! its making a beeping sound, why is it doing that? is it broke? it must be broke? see, see, its beeping again!!"

while running, and seemingly ok (save this funny beeping episode, which its now done twice this evening, briefly both times.)

is it broke? has it chewed up the washing? or has it just washed the washing?

well guess what, i dunno why the fuck its decided to beep at you, i have no idea how the machine works (is it pixies?, i bet its pixies, or some other form of hobgoblin) and as long as it keeps going i don't really care. cos if it breaks i aint going to be able to fix it.

apparently i am in the wrong about this "attitude". Joy.

Now you know why they teach you to get off the bike first, then fanny around with the stand(s). I always get off first before deploying stand and retract before mounting.

Whilst I have done plenty of low speed crashes, I can't remember dropping a bike off a stand. I may have done a static drop of a heavily laden Honda H100, with an equally heavily laden rucksack and losing my balance when kickstarting it. This may not have happened though as it was dark and nobody was around...

Being a light bike, falls softly and easier to pick up. :)

If a bike falls over, and no-one is around to hear it, does it make a sound?

Nah, I find it much easier to do on the bike. Holding it up to get on/off is a pain in the arse & wasn't something I did very often when I had a Pan either.

And yes - licenced hackney carriages exist outside London, but still only in built up areas. The idea of Uber is that there are far more part time drivers, so more likely to be someone in your area. I'm 15 miles from the nearest hackney carriage rank but I can get an Uber.

Manchester currently has an issue where it's full of hackneys licenced in Calderdale, to get around the fact MCC won't hackney plate anything apart from LTIs, Vito Taxis and Partner E7s.

Can't remember if I've mentioned this before, but talking of taxis I've found a new way to to annoy miserable black cab drivers: don't quite shut the sliding door properly when you get out. It seems to send them into an apocalyptic rage every time.

Ha ha. Yes cos then they have to get up off their arse and close it. They don't like excercise a lot of them ..Still they know how to run the country or what a football manager should be doing. By us they dropped the knowledge test so anyone can now go on a course and drive a taxi. So when you get in and say whiston hospital they ask you for a postcode. I can understand not knowing everything. But not knowing the main hospital is a bit crap..

I don't envy you. Mind you, I have no idea what my follow on job is. I'll be going home anyway.

Look on the positive side, you are much nearer to the seaside than I currently am, Devon has nice Cider, Seaton has a tramway, Beer has Pecorama, Ladram Bay has Ozzie the Otter. I spent my teenage holidays in a static caravan in that part of Devon so I have a soft spot for it.

I spent my teenage years playing on the tramway at Seaton (gentleman tram driver, me) In all the years, never went to Pecorama. Sadly won't have chance to do either this time as I'll be stuck inside school grounds all day, apart from the weekend whee I'll be in the centre of Exeter.

What kind of machine is it?

My LG washer sometimes does a weird beep when it's running if it thinks the load is unbalanced. Sometimes sorts itself out, sometimes stops.

its some sort of Indersit thing, dunno which model, its a washing machine and its white!

when it has finished the cycle and unlocked the door, it goes beep, beep, beeeeeep.

now last night a couple of times it went beep-beep, mid cycle for no reason that i know of. and it kept on going!

it was a small load of kerry's work clothes, including her socks, so that would be enought to make me want to stop....

there is a fault on the mother board somewhere, sometimes when you turn it on, it gets confused as to which wash setting its on. the normal synthetics wash, the one we nearly always use, is 1.40 long, where as the whites setting, the previous one on the dail is 3 hours. sometimes it comes up as 3 hours, then when you move the dial back to the synthetics setting, it'll get the right time.

the bloody thing is out of garentee (typically) and i do get things through the post offering me an extended warrantee on the machine. thing is, the 3 or 4 years cover (i cannot remember which it is) would end up costing MORE than what i payed for the bloody thing!

hence i haven't signed up for it, and if the machine does turn its toes up, i'll just have to go and buy another one.

which frankly is really rubbish!!

all modern cars/appliances/stuff is crap!!

Posted

The control boards are pretty universal across the range of cheaper machines - you could probably find a replacement quite cheap on eBay

Posted

No, just Indesit is crap. You'd be better off just chucking your clothes into the bath and stomping some soapy water into them. Awful machines.

Ours does the same confusion over wash length but sorts itself out when you press start. Then trips the electrics, great when you're out for the day and your freezer goes off because there's a short in the washer.

I rang my friend Betty this morning. Not seen her for a couple of months (life gets in the way and good intentions etc) since I took her out in the Bentley for a 'treat' to the seaside for a sit on the beach and an ice cream. She was fine then (she's 85 by the way) but today, she sounded like she could barely remember what day it is! Christ, that proper upset me, I know she has stress in her life at the mo' but... Anyway, I got in touch with her daughter and she's coming down at the weekend to collect Betty and take her back up to London (suburbs) to stay for a while. I really hope it helps.

I fear senility has bitten as she repeated the same question and answer routine at least three times in five minutes.

It's horrible at any age.

I found out last week my ex has been diagnosed with Alzheimer's at the age of 51. Her memory and mental agility had definitely been in decline but to actually get a diagnosis was a shock.

The kids (even though they're not kids any more) are in a right state, especially my older daughter who still lives with her.

I noticed the other day the rear wheel on Mrs c's Leon was red hot. I dropped it into my local friendly garage hoping it could be freed off but both calipers are solid and the pads and discs are destroyed . 270 quid

Vag shite.

Roundabouts.  Horn got a good excercise today.  Not sure why the big Peugeot decided to just pull out very slowly as I was reaching my exit with my indicators on in my bright fucking red car.  Also not sure why on the next roundabout the K11 Micra decided they had the wrong lane after exiting and started to merge into my lane.  beep!  Still merging  BEEEEEEEP!  Looks at me and CONTINUES merging.  WTF?  I have nowhere to go and you can SEE ME! BEEEEEEEP!  oh, there's your indicators, and you found how to slow down, and now you're going to follow me into the supermarket car park and park not in a parking space, but in the Taxi collection point.

I... urgh.

On the plus side I saw a really tidy Mk2 Mondeo when I got out of the shop and I've not seen one of those in ages and ages.

On Uber, this is the best article I've seen about them in London:

https://www.londonreconnections.com/2017/understanding-uber-not-app/

Which led me to this on them generally (although some of which goes way over my head):

https://www.nakedcapitalism.com/2016/11/can-uber-ever-deliver-part-one-understanding-ubers-bleak-operating-economics.html

There's some illuminating figures in the second article, not least the fact that Uber loses $1-2bn a year, and only recoups about 40% of their costs, despite recently cutting the amount that drivers take. Their end game (ignoring driverless cars, which are way off) is to basically price everyone else out of the market, including public transport if possible, and hike prices a la Stagecoach etc with buses...

Meant to be a car sale going down tonight, price and everything agreed last Thursday, spoke to him on the phone and he seemed like a decent guy, long term member of both here and the blue forum. Was reasonably confident there wouldn't be an issue

Spent Sunday cleaning it inside and out, digging out paperwork, re-housing all my shit etc...come today, radio silence. Joys of the used car selling experience I guess. Is a text/phone call/pm/e-mail (I accept many forms of communication) saying 'soz changed my mind' really so hard?

Still, at least it's clean now I suppose.

That's very disappointing, unless there's a reasonable explanation.  We don't do that to each other here...

Radio 4 that's where it's at. If I lived on my Todd I really wouldn't bother with the idiot box. I take inspiration from my mum, they didn't have a TV until she'd be about 15. They spent the evenings doing crafts or actually having a conversation, bizarre as that seems these days.
