Been to fetch the dollop from the garage where it has been 'resting' for the last 4 weeks. Obviously it had a flat battery so jumped from the KIA and started straight away. Driving it out, taking care to miss the MX5 and the garage door  for once and I thought it felt 'odd'.  Reversing it across to park and it scraped on the bump in the middle of the road which it has never done before and it was making some odd noises.

Flat bloody tyre! Fortunately the electric pump thing in the boot did the job but took forever and all the time I was fretting about the battery. It took so long to blow the tyre up, the car was at operating temp when it had finished!

edf / farm update if anyone gives a flying one....

The farm genny died late last night....a carbon brush was arcing and melted its holder. I took my heavy as fuck unit round which started up easily and straight away pissed petrol everywhere from a perished hose. It had been fine last time I used it a few months back. Anyway...easy fix.

Another day of people standing around and prodding things, guys climbing power poles in the fields and general head scratching they have found the local power transformer had failed. Its a box about 10 feet up a pole on the edge of the farm boundary and its output was all over the place.

I am no electrician but logic would suggest that should have been about the first thing to check? Like two fucking days ago? whatevz.

Anyway, brother in law is checking what works and what doesnt in the house. Seems like the big stuff is ok and its wee stuff like phone chargers and the like that have failed.

Grump today is that the only person to show serious interest in buying my Mercedes came last night and didn't buy it.   He was put off by some small bits of rust which do let the car down to be fair.   On the other hand it's a 2001 W210 with only 100,000 miles, a nigh on perfect interior and brand new AC compressor and tyres.

Debating if it is worth tidying it up some more i.e. bodging the rust or just taking it to the WBAC equivalent.

TBH Dave, I'd try and err on the side of them replacing everything. Stuff might still work, but surges like that do real damage to the HV capacitors and diodes etc. While things might currently work, there's a very good chance that they've got a seriously reduced lifespan now.

I'm interested in farmgate for reasons I don't quite know.

If EDF are waving the compo forms round, it would be a shame if the oven, washer etc was broken...

Jeez, imagine if someone had their Hybrid on charge!

Full set of batteries for a Prius won't be cheap

My mate had a load of shit from wbac over a couple of rust spots on an old 5series, they tried to take about half the value off for two bits the size of a 10p. It was only a £1200 car but I thought that was taking the piss more than a little.

If you're selling something on Gumtree and someone buys it you should remove the advert YOU BASTARD.

Expect to have the inside of your pants closely inspected for any signs of wear or fraying then ££££ knocked off an already low offer.

I hope they use protection that wont break if things get a bit exciting .

it's not just on there, I'm getting quite annoyed by the Irish property website where I keep trying to contact estate agents, who eventually get back to tell me that a house has sold, and then they are still advertised months later.

Missed out on an incredibly cheap van from work by procrastinating about asking about it for two days. They usually keep stuff til its two years old, I noticed it was just about that old so thought I'd ask when the chance came about.

Turns out the gaffers mate asked him about it on monday so I'm two days late. He sold the last one for 2k and presumably wants about the same for this. Oh well. I suppose I don't have to worry about a 90k 1.5DCI!

Doing my lunch dishes in the sink at work. There is no plug so once I have scrubbed them, I lay them on the bottom of the sink and rinse them off and put them on the side before drying and putting away. In the 30 second space of time between me laying them down and rinsing them, for 2 days in a row, 2 different impatient people have emptied their coffee over my clean dishes. Ok there's no water in the sink but they are covered in suds and so are my hands and the sponge that I am holding. It's fupping obvious that I've just cleaned them.

Blow the red balloon away Iain!!

It's ok. I'm pretty sure that legally, you can smash a dish into their stupid, coffee-ponce faces. Maybe check first.

Elsewhere, people are FRANTIC with concern about nuns and kittens, because my Omega has mismatched rear springs. My introduction to the Vauxhall community may not be going well, even though I do plan to change the older spring so I have a match! Bit annoying to only discover now that you can buy a pair of rear springs for an Omega in Germany for 33 Euro-groats mind you. Not the correct ones for self-levelling, but it seems fitting standard springs is fine.

Posted

I had a mk3 Mondeo estate which had self levelling rear suspension, I fitted stock rear springs on it because they were cheaper and it sat comically high afterwards.

Might have just been newness though, I'm sure they would have 'bedded down' in about 140 thousand miles

Does it make any difference to the way it drives and does it sit level? Where did you get the single spring?

Nearly all single make/model forums are full of fuds. The only good one I can think of is the 306 Owners Club forum which I used recently to procure a Bosch IP pulley.

They are almost certainly the same people who plead poverty and only get one spring or shock changed when their "cherished" car fails a MoT. Those big sideways stickers on the windscreen must cost a fortune!

I must be getting old, because most car stickers annoy me these days especially when they are funny* like "I'm only speeding because I need a poo" or the old fave "Goes quicker than a smackhead's giro" which I actually saw on the back of a flipping diesel galaxy the other day.

I followed a Golf the other day, white, 3 door, bling wheels and "I love Boobies" on the back. I thought he was a tit before he threw a half full chip wrapper out of the window.

Which reminds me, "No smoke no poke" on the back of your covered in soot TDI actually means "I'm not getting a MoT this year"

Doesn't feel any different to drive at all. I will be replacing the old spring though, because the spec is different for the self-levellers. I don't consider it ideal how it is, but I notice no-one seemed to get in a panic about it here on the beige...

Meh.

My old Audi A4 had "sport" springs which sat 20mm lower than standard springs. I replaced one of the rear springs, then about 2 months later noticed that one of the rear wheels had a small amount of positive camber. It drove fine, from what I could tell. Turned out I'd fitted a standard spring. The fucking sports springs were £90 a pop from Audi themselves, and no pattern parts were available anywhere, but I conceded and spent out on a sport spring.

Does it keep its arse off the tyres?

Do you go rallying in it?

It'll be fine! The meriva had a snapped spring for a few months before I noticed and that rode fine. Then I took those off to replace them and noticed the weepy shocks...

As LP says, it’ll be fine.

A good rule of thumb is that anyone on a one-make internet forum giving out VERY STRONGLY WORDED ADVICE is 95% likely to just be a fud and can thus be cheerfully ignored. If the spring fits and holds the car at about the right level, you’re sorted.

Walking into work today enjoying a nice rolly when some smart car signwritten up as NHS Stop Smoking rolled up and wound his window down

"Excuse me, could I offer you help on stopping smoking?"

"If you can help me with my relationship issues, car issues and hardcore drug and alcohol abuse then yes, I'll stop smoking..."

He wound his window up and drove off. I felt the above was nicer than telling him to fuck off... he seemed a pleasant chap
