I'm sure I read something the other day about Sony finally "retiring" Betamax tapes?

Posted

me parents too had one of those, a sanyo betamax video.

when we finally got said video, i was gutted that it wasn't vhs, a friend had "clash of the titans" on tape, but their machine was a vhs.....

and yes the other day there was something on the news about sony finally ending betamax, i'm surprised that they lasted SO MUCH LONGER that vhs, but there again it wa broadcast quality, and whenever i've seen the likes of the local new lot filming then it was always with a betamax camera.

Yeah, my parents had the exact same one - maybe that explains where the one I keep finding in the garage came from. I had the same experience as well, but with a pirated copy of "The Empire Strikes Back"

Scary - you look as if you actually live in the 70s. If you ever fancy a tour of the early 90s, you're welcome to mine!

I heard that on the radio last week or so - even more amazing was the statistic quoted - they were still selling something like 12 million units a year!

Are there any left now? Nope.

When I stayed in a bedsit, there was a bloke who used to work in a second-hand telly shop and he said one of the crap jobs he had was to iron-on some plain black fablon over the old-fashioned fake wood to make it look more contemporary.... :D

I suppose if you really want that shite ex-rental look, you could do the reverse and iron on some shit teak-effect fablon.

Let's be realistic here with regards to budget vs want. What you really want is a CRT Widescreen, one of those child-killer weighty objects that need four people to move. That way you get a nice CRT picture with a tube in at least the right ratio for what they are broadcasting and they're cheap. If you're watching in the wrong ratio, then I'll have to come up and give you a boot in the baws.

Anyway fake teak is rubbish, our 1970s Bush telly was white (bought new from Comet, Abbotsinch in 1976 - had a one button remote!) Can't find a picture of that one. We also had a second-hand Murphy CV2215 in the early 1980s which was white just like this:

Proving the world can still be viewed in black and white, despite digital tv.

Still have the set, but sadly no longer have Bob the dog.

Somewhere I have, in a box, an unused frequency modulator thing so that you can plug in digi-box/satellite box and convert from a scart to an RF co-axial output so you can watch modern stuff on an old pre-scart set. I'll dig it out and put it up for grabs if anyone wants it, as I'll never use it.

Very glad to see the Mitsubishi's still going, Hirst. I bought it from Rufforth car boot sale c.1995 when it wasn't full of knock-off new stuff. Advertised at £15 by a very nice man, my Grandad obviously thought that was too much for me, so I got it for £12.50 IIRC.

On the Betamax thing, I wonder if it's the long phasing out of the various Digibeta formats that broadcast camera bodies used? can't remember the last time I did a job with a camera running tapes (or even film, sadly) but I think it was still a popular format in studios.

Here's my Mitsubishi 20-inch with remote control.

It's not for sale, though.

That brings back memory's as my parents had the same TV on hire from our local electrical shop, at least it didn't have a massive box that you had to put coins in to make it work like the neighbours TV did.

HOT home cinema there.

I keep fancying an old Ferguson TX but they're pretty much extinct now.

In fact it's quite surprising how few CRTs there are left considering there were millions of the things ten years ago. All smashed up in YouTube videos probably.

I've my grand parents TX on/off swt its knackered so is on once plugged in, also a couple of B&W portables one the late 70's white case we bought new in mid/late 70's skegness high street when we had or static in nearby chapel-st-leonards ( I know roughly where it is but daren't go look for it as no where to store unless I win lottery then I will & intend to have it restored) but I digress also was given few years back an early video camera with separate shoulder bag type recorder.

want a 70's ferguson studio 7 hi-fi.

Loaded the bike into the back of the LDV van this evening, as I'm trying to clear the crap out of the Movano in preparation for its impending MOT.

First thing I noticed is that the LDV has a substantially higher loading height than the Movano - the bike required engine assistance to get up my (rather short) ramp.  Got it in OK though, stand down, into gear, then on with the ratchet strap to stop it falling over.  There was a conveniently placed hole in the side loading door, so hooked the strap onto that, then ratcheted it tight.  Then I jumped out of the back doors and eventually managed to persuade them to close properly.

Which was great, except I forgot that the back doors don't open from the outside.  And the side door now doesn't open because it's held closed by the ratchet strap.

Fucksticks.

Just got some parts delivered from the YouKay for my feral Rover.

This started out as a grump about the charges for postage, but I am editing my post to say that the seller turned out to be a top class bloke that made an honest mistake about the charges for the postage - he promptly sorted out the over charges and I am very happy to do business with him in the future.

Not much of a grump then I s'pose.

I found myself quite refreshed today - Ive wanted to do this for years but never had the courage.

Stuck in bloody Farmfoods shopping for the old dears behind two fat wobbly track suited greasy haired things - I went with my usual ''excuse me '' - nothing happened still kept nattering.

little louder as I was getting a tad irate ''EXCUSE me '' - Nope no beans .

Took a deep breath '' OI WILL YOU FUCK OFF AND LET ME PASS''

shop went all quiet - they stared and moved - damn  -  that felt bloody good :-)

Well it happened. White Transit on my arse this morning, going over speedbumps. As they are the cushion sort and the road is quiet, I usually go up the middle to speed things up. I though this increase in speed would have placated the driver but instead, before I can even see hom, he forces his way past and then tries to side swipe me off the road. I took his number and gave it to the feds right away.

Stuck in bed with sciatica in both legs that came on while i was consuming dinner at the dining table last night, big fuck off amounts of codine eans that walking 5 yards to thebog is only quite painful instead of excruciating.

Looks like I'll be paying the well named Dr Saw for a prick between the arse cheeks again to get me mobile for 6 months, bah.

Lots of pricks in the world, some drive new audis, some drive 5 year olds focuses and some drive 20 year old Rovers the trick is to just ignore them and not let it affect your day or you end up as a bitter man spending time complaining on a web site about cars.

The wife's Multipla has been making some clanking noises from the NSF wheel which seemed to be the drop link. Replaced the link last night in the cold and rain but noticed there was a score mark on the subframe. For some reason somethings moved and the bolt that holds the droplink to the ARB is fouling. Sounds even worse now. Fuck.

Fast forward to this morning and the XM has kippered it's starter motor. MOTHAFUKA. It's a bastard of a job to do and I've no idea when I can get time to do it. Gah!

Worn arb bushes on the multiplop allowing it to move from side to side.

Those crt tv's are so fucking heavy. I recently moved a 36 inch Sony trinitron and just about had to get in a fork lift truck . It took 3 of us to move it.

It got dumped as no one wanted it.

If you want an old but working perfectly CRT telly, get yourself to Torquay and collect this bugger! 28" (I think) but looks massive! It's sat at the end of my bed stopping the dog from going the other side and nothing more.

I cannot throw something away if it works properly which is why I still have it!

Yes, myself and Catsinwelder know very well about moving big heavy Sony Trinitron CRT TVs up to the first floor.

I bought some fuck off great CRT tele for £5 about 3 years ago of ebay for our work messroom, After killing myself getting it into the boot of my Mondeo, taking it into work, getting a workmate to help me with it through a turnstile and up 3 flights of stairs to our messroom only to find it was too big for the unit we wanted to put it on...

The following day i got offered a 32" HD TV for free of Freecycle so i needed not have bothered. :(

My rant for today...people who think the HowManyLeft website is the absolute gospel when it comes to accurate info about retro cars.  They tend to be the people who believe that liking a photo of a diseased child or dog on Facebook will somehow make a difference.

Just swapped the wheels over on the Subaru for the winter set, thought i'd slip a quick oil change in while it's up in the air.

Seemed a good idea at the time.

Gunna be a clever dick i am, can't be arsed to undo the 7 bolts which hold the undertray on, sure i can get the oil though the hole designed for it to flow, and it looks easy enough to reach the filter from round the back.

Off comes the drain plug, sod me i'd forgot how large the thread bore is on this motor, bloody hot oil's coming out like a hose, too much for the can to cope with, splosh, oil everywhere..

Mopped that lot up, right i'll get that filter off now...struggle bend swear cuss twist scrape previously undouble jointed wrists bang elbows, fuck it, have to undo the edge of the undertray after all, bollocks, got the arse by now and i'm more determined than ever not to remove the tray even if it kills me, idiot.

Try the filter strap wrench (had to buy that for the Landcruiser cos it's stupidly tight to the block), thats only sliding round, have to get me chain wrench out, that grips but starts to crush the filter, double bollocks, eventually, half an hour later, i've got the filter undone, as i undo it oils coming out the sides and runs all over the tray and pours out of about 6 different drain holes, treble bollocks, course then as i'm working cack handed trhe fuckin filter slips out me hand and sploshes the now everywhere in the undertray oil everywhere else, quadruple bollocks...why does that tiny filter appear to hold a further 5 litres of oil?

New filter on, clean up sort of, finish changing the wheels over, pump em up they all lost 5 psi since March, sod off indoors with the hump and tell you lot just what a useless twat i am.

Next time i'm taking the undertray off.

And i'm knackered, was going to grease the LC prop and give that an oil change too, too pissed off to do it now.
