Fscking Autodoc...

Not even so much their existence or anything, I do use them often enough.  My particular grump here is that they have popped up now under so many different names and web domains that about the first 3000 matches for anything you search for on Google in terms of car parts winds up redirecting to them...which is fine if they have what you need - but if they don't it just gets absolutely maddening to keep coming back to the same damned page over and over and over and over again just with a slightly different graphic in the header.

It's a really horrible practice on their part as it's clearly intended to simply wipe any other providers off the search results so they can pocket all the customers.

Searching for apparently completely extinct consumable parts is frustrating enough as it is.

Add to that substituting their own brand vs your chosen brand and taking weeks to process the refund..

Mrs 206 needed some welding for the MOT. The garage did a good solid job, but it wasn't pretty.

Over the last couple of weekends I've filled and flattened the area, a bit of high build primer and all that.

Today it is dry and sunny here so I took the opportunity to get a top coat on it. 

(No photos because I never think of that until half way through).

Well the colour match is pretty good. But something has reacted with the paint and it looks like a fucking map of the moon.

Bollocks.

A local pub which has been in the news a lot recently, local and national, spontaneously  burst into flames last night,  built in 1765. 

I remember standing in the grounds with my arms around my now wife asking if she’d be my girlfriend under the fireworks on bonfire night when we were 16.  And more recently our daughter working behind the bar and having a pint on a Sunday lunch.

Apparently it was, and had been sold 6 days ago to a private buyer who  had an alternate use for it. I hope he had his insurance in place.....

Yeah, sold to a private buyer, much speculation as to who it has been sold to,  no one actually knows. 
 

This happed to another local pub, the one my wife and I had our wedding reception in ironically, less than a mile from this place, it’s recently been knocked down and planning has been approved. 

At least they made it look less suspicious than this and screwed it over, over the course of a few years. 
 

The crocked house is not only a local icon but an international one. Brilliant pub in the wrong area sadly.

If it's anything like in Glasgow, the demolition crews will be on the scene as soon as the fire engines leave. Funny* how they're always available at short notice in these situations. Check your local councillors' back gardens next summer  for suspicious looking new swimming pools...

I read about the Crooked House this morning. Very sad end. Haven't been for years admittedly but it was something interesting and different

That is just a little bit suspicious!

I wonder if it was an inside job to ensure it could become a building plot, or the work of a bitter 3rd party, unhappy at the change of ownership?

Reminds me of a story I was told about a backstreet car dealer who would engage the services of a mysterious figure known as "The Dragon" who ensured that troublesome cars no longer required any warranty work once they had been brought back more than a couple of times.

They weren't still putting asbestos into new builds by 1985, surely?

I'm sure* my pandemic-grade blue fabric mask will be super-effective at offering protection, if so...

Sadly they were.  Use in building work wasn't outright banned until well into the late 90s as I recall.

The previous landlord had a real passion for the pub, genuinely wanted to make it a going concern. 
 

I doubt we’ll ever know who was responsible for it, but I know people will fight against any planning on this site now.

They don’t make them like this anymore! Tuff old girl still standing.

Thanks for that - I've had a careful look, and I'm pretty sure what I'm dealing with is just gypsum plasterboard, unlagged copper piping, wooden beams and glassfibre insulation. I can't see anything resembling asbestos insulating board, or asbestos lagging, or anything else highlighted by the HSE advice documents. The walls here have never been plastered - it's just wallpaper over jointed plasterboard - so there's no Artex or anything present.

Peeling off the silver heat foil backing on the board only indicates gypsum content, and not some sort of asbestos board.

The bit of paper with the asbestos warning on it was twisted up and then skimmed over with Polyfilla to block gaps in the wall around the central heating pipes, presumed retrofitted in the early 1990s.

It might have just been from some scrap paper kicking around the back of the fitters' van, maybe from some pipe lagging  - I really can't see what it could refer to here.

Still - not something you want to see...

I work in the heritage sector specialising in surveying historic buildings and this sort of thing is increasingly common. Historic buildings especially listed ones are especially at risk as owners or developers see them as a pain in the arse to redevelop. Also it is hard to get change of use for a commercial property such as a public house for housing which is where all the money is. There is little risk to the developer in all this, they’ll get what they want and it’ll keep happening.

I was at my 87 year old mother-in-law's on Saturday, and she asked me to look at her house insurance renewal as she thought it seems too high. €800 through the AA for a plain 100 Sqm bungalow. And on their figures €165k to rebuild, which is definitely low. AXA online €316 insured for €210k. I looked up her previous premiums and the literally doubled in 3 years. 

AA = Exploiters of the elderly.

Looks like it was a nice serviceable place, completely surrounded by Utilities. You will... in a few years time after the public have lost interest, moved on, and planning* has stealthily gone through one way or another. Might as well get your 'NO TO (insert industrial expansion here)' posters printed, ready.

@fairkens - which part is funny?

Back on topic, apparently the access road was blocked for the fire service to access due to 'flytipping'. 

The whole thing smells fishier than Mel B's character on Bo Selecta - it'll be interesting to see what happens next. I was reading about The Claremont in Eastbourne burning down recently - will it be rebuilt in the style of the original? Place your bets.

Who remembers the fire at the Royal Clarence in Exeter seven years ago? Grade 2 listed and from what I remember,  the then owners took the hefty insurance payout, sold the ruined shell and ran.

There's a lot of social media coverage on the Crooked House fire, the whole thing does appear to stink.  One sure fire way (pardon the pun) of now having to tear the shell down and build faceless houses or whatever.

The Black Country museum have said today that they are not in a position to take the remains, and were not in a position before the fire either so that's another nail in the local coffin.

Bloody Halfords! 

Bought their all singing and dancing 5 year guarantee battery right at the end of 2019 but the Passat has been struggling to start recently. I've had them test it several times and it says good/recharge - but it doesn't charge properly. 

Yesterday I put it on charge for several hours, left it disconnected overnight then did a 22 mile drive without turning off on my way to them. They tested it and yet again "good/recharge". They then offered to test the alternator etc (which I'd already done) and the battery was so flat it wouldn't start - they then jumped it and tried telling me 14.1v is low! Bloke just walked off after we asked about contacting their head office.

Battery is clearly fucked but because "computer says no" they're not interested. Now talking to their live chat/Facebook bods 😡
