At work.  Have to give four presentations this evening.  I'm covering for two other people that can't be here and it's to people that I haven't met.  And I'm the most junior person in my department (of the three of us!).

Help.

The advice I was once given was to imagine them all naked, it was horrible so not doing that again.

Better is just do it as if you know them.

Best of luck

Go sick. That’s exactly the sort of emergency sick time was invented for!

Hah!  There's a reason that's funny, Dan.

I quite like public speaking.  Just not when I'm the last person that should be doing it!

I’m guessing that’s what the other people your covering for did?!

If you quite like public speaking you've got an advantage over most folk, probably including the ones who should be doing it!

Agreed with local builder for some work to be done, price agreed on, that he'd do it as and when he could, and that he'd bill me at the end of April.

Bill's come in now, less than I expected but still six weeks before I planned to have the fucking money to hand. Ten day 'pay by' on it as well.

I'd phone him and explain the problem.  Tell him when he can have his money, and hope he's not got a cash flow problem himself.  Meanwhile max out all your zero interest credit cards.

There’s a reason I do the fire announcements at events.

Actually went very well. Nobody cried and nobody was staring into blank space. Up to half an hour of hearing me witter on (2 presentations twice, each 15 minutes). Outcome is yet to be decided but did fine...

I don't have any credit cards.

Called him as soon as I opened it - "Nowt I can do, mate."

YOS, definitely give him a bell and explain, he may be happy to not cause you a cash flow issue, or he might not, but will appreciate the honesty, particularly if you tell him he *can* have the money in 10 days, but it will be difficult for you.

What would actually happen if you didn't pay him now but waited until the end of April as agreed?  Would he send the lads round with baseball bats, or would he just whinge a bit?  If the latter, why not just tell him that to pay him early would cause you major issues so you'll pay when you agreed to pay.

If the agreement was payment at the end of April, then pay on the day agreed.

Assuming that the work is done and you are happy with it are you able to pay something on account and the balance at the end of April, he may be happy with that,

Wow, a builder who does a sound job, under budget and in a quicker timescale. Keep hold of his bloody number FFS.

I can see this 'problem' from both sides.

If I as the provider of services had agreed an end of April payment then I wouldn't go back on that unless absolutely desperate.....and even if desperate I'd be open to discussion on the matter.

'Nowt I can do' is a pretty naff response from the builder and breaches his verbal contract.

I think the above response is a very sensible one.

Might not be worth holding onto? Sounds to me like the builder is in financial trouble.

'Let's do it cheaper in the hope that the customer will stump up quicker than agreed and we get some cash in'.

The only time I used a builder was for a loft 19 years ago. He required payment for materials 2 weeks before he started, and then stage payments. Basically he limited his risk to one week of work.

He's still in business. You book him 3 months ahead and he keeps to about 3 days of his target start and finish.

Only does lofts thou.

Depressed seeing the news this morning, and what level of stupidity does it require for a non-aboriginal Australian to go to another country and kill people based on an anti-immigration standpoint? The world is a horrible place sometimes.

I guess you can only progress so high in the building trade.

Best get out whilst still young. I’m in my 30th year teaching in a secondary school. Too late for me to change career and earn the same money-but I’m fairly lucky as I’m 55 next year so coul£ take my pension and work somewhere for a third of the pay.

I wasnt thinking to name and shame though but I guess morpeth would be to far for them anyway.
