The grumpy thread

But the, "New advert on the telly", misogyny, and "Women we want to shag" sexism are OK.

Moderation in the open forum - only visible to members - is in my view, a joke.

Close the place or leave members to discuss what they want to, subject to to legal restrictions.

That's your view and you're entitled to it.

Your last sentence however is a false dichotomy. The policy regarding the open forum sits somewhere in the middle of those two extremes, like most things in life.

To take the specific examples you've given, the new advert on the telly thread was a fairly engaging debate where all participants managed to put their point of view across without hurling abuse at each other and a good healthy spectrum of views were represented without any one side dominating the discussion. If all debates were like that we'd never have a problem.

The celebs thread has never to my knowledge received a complaint about it and NSFW content is not allowed. UNLIKE the cars and girls thread certain members don't think it's funny old lark to keep trying to post images that push the bounds of what constitutes NSFW, thus giving me a thumping headache every time I open my browser.

When you look at the history of Nikka and Suntory, they copied the Scottish methodology very closely, the original protagonists studying distilling over here in the 1920's and taking their new found skills and knowledge home with them.

Nowadays Japanese whiskies compare very favourably with the more traditional Highland beverage.

If it makes you look like Bill Murray does in the photo, I'll give it a miss.Has his head started melting or something?

I trust those braying fucking morons outside a children's hospital beeping their horns, gobbing off and shouting abuse at the staff who are there to save lives won't take their kids to that hospital if, God forbid, they fell seriously ill.

Silently, peacefully protest by all means. Anything else, take your social media mentality and piss off.

The sad thing is that people are falling out over things they have seen in the news which as we all know is 'based on a true story' and not 100% representative of what has happened.

I would be happy to see a debate based on facts but very few people actually know what the facts are so it's hardly worth falling out over.

I for one am glad its been binned and that I had completely missed it.

Syria is something very close to my heart as I am from Syrian heritage if you hadn't already noticed and therefore a VERY contentious issue for me. I have to put up with bastard politicians talking shit about a country they have no knowledge of or interest in, so to watch someone talking the same utter crap on here and most probably going to drag religion through mud for the heck of it, in the name of what? Expressing an "opinion" or "freedom" or whatever can and will bring out the worst in us.

Yes, I never read the thread and didn't know of its existance until it was mentioned here. However having seen so many of these threads before, particularly during Daveb47s time, I can certainly imagine how it went.

'Don't open the thread if ya don't like it' I hear? How would I know whether I do or don't like it if I don't open it and find out? Some threads have genuinely surprised me, opening it up thinking it'll be a shit slanging match yet turns out to be a nice and calm debate where we can all genuinely learn something from. But others that involve politics or religion have always turned to shit. Usually because there are some shit-stirrers here who enjoy nothing else but goading others, yes I've seen it and have been on the receiving end of some of the shit slanging and personal attacks.

I'm unsure as to why some of us here, sitting in our suburban houses in England, working in our boring jobs trying to make ends meet suddenly think they can solve the crisis in the Syria? Most of you probably know shit-all about the Middle East, it's politics, culture and religious values outside of what the papers tell you or what you hear down the pub.

We all have opinions about what is going on, how it should be solved. Fuck, the world "leaders" are making a right meal of it and are actually making it worse, so I doubt if anyone here, sitting on thier arse at home has the answer, they don't. No matter what some 'mate'/newspaper tells you, you will never know the full story. So yeah, keep opinions to yourself.

I've said my piece, I support the admins decision. End of.

Feckin' BT Openbreach have screwed the cables outside our office, so no e-mail or net service.....and no meaningful work either. And it looks like everyone else on this stretch of premises is screwed as well.

Went home early to play with CX gearbox.

Went home early to play with CX gearbox.

I had a Cx gearbox rebuilt once after the forward drive clutch went pop.

I wrangled that fecker back in, took the car for a test drive, all good ☺.

Had a few beers to celebrate and went to kip.

In the morning I couldn't get out of bed, turns out I'd ruptured a disc fighting with that gearbox

I hope yours is just a nice simple fluid change ☺

I was never into that sort of thing either to be honest but my son had such a good time, I'm beginning to think I might have missed out.

I think Air Cadets/ Army Cadets etc don't start till you are at secondary school maybe not in the first year either.

Hopefully you will get some news on the waiting list when you give them a call or they may know which packs/ troops in the area have a spaces.

Dodge, if you think you've missed out then I can guarantee there's a local beavers, cubs or scout group that needs helpers! You'll get all the same benefits - climbing trees, building fires, camping etc - regardless of age ;)

Whilst many leaders start off going along with their own kids and helping out occasionally, the numbers that stay on and do the training to become leaders after the kids have left tells me that grown adults can still enjoy it. If you can spare a couple of hours every few weeks, they'll bite your hand off.

I have very good memories of being a scout.

The leader was a friend and workmate of my dad's and had a fine balance of authority and friendliness, liked and respected by all.

My grandson tried the cubs a year ago and had the same sort of experience as the Alabama Shrimplet - the leaders were friendly enough but the focus was on having all the right kit and then they spent most of the time colouring in, no outdoor activities whatsoever.

And Mo - I sympathise wholeheartedly.

I know less than nothing of Syria and am in no position to be an amateur pundit.

All I know is second hand, I have no Syrian acquaintances, but my daughter works with many from the Arab countries, almost all refugees who are very thankful to be in the UK. All are hardworking, pleasant, polite and friendly people doing their best in the world for their families and set a good example for us with our petty whinges.

A mate was so unimpressed with his sons beaver troop that he ended up as a leader.

Before, they pretty much got badges for turning up. Now they do astronomy, they know cloud formations and weather patterns, cook stuff but best of all, they go outside and set fire to things..

Night hikes with Beavers are brilliant. They can now camp under canvas too, before they could do overnights but only in a building. And with a "dynamic risk assessment" (i.e. be sensible but don't be scared) you can do cooking over camp fires, we do abseling and archery too.

I left scouts after they banned wide games. We used to go up Highdown hill and play manhunt, it was great fun but then we had a game with the ruffians from the Little-Ampton pack and they turned up with friggin weapons. I climbed out of some undergrowth after a big chase, thinking we'd got away from them and got clouted over the head with a sock with pool balls in it. Other kids got it worse.

After that wide games were banned and we were just doing stuff like tying knots and shit and who needs knots when you have cable ties. Not me.

I was in Beavers and Cubs, fortunately for me in Cubs, the local leader liked my attitude and made me a second sixer, and then sixer ahead of people that had been around longer than me - unfortunately the pack was made up almost entirely of people from my primary school, so these were people in the year above, and for the most part they were smug cunts and just made life difficult for me.

It was never fun, because I was too busy telling people to stop being pricks, and as such not wanting to go on any expeditions etc (besides I'm not sure we could afford it) and anyone I was remotely friendly with (ie people in my class at school, that I wasn't even that popular in) was in a different six. As such I packed it in and never went to scouts as I just couldn't be arsed with it - it'd just be full of the same people (and I'd have to climb the ladder again), and besides, I had fairly severe social anxiety, and I just didn't want to have to deal with it on top of some prick bullying me at school - which my y6 teacher who was the deputy head, and the head teacher KNOWINGLY LET HAPPEN as they didn't like me and thought I was a smart arse.

In my last year at primary school it became very fucking obvious what was going on thanks to a run of bad luck - whenever anything happened the head responded by dragging me and the bully to her office and telling us to 'agree to disagree' (the bully was never punished, and why the fuck was I involved?). One morning this happened, the following lunchtime I happened to accidentally whack the guy in the face with my arm while playing football, having no idea he was behind me. Cunt conveniently starts crying, and goes and whinges to a dinner lady who bitches to the head. The head instantly takes the bully's side and refuses to listen to me, and  she in turn goes to the deputy, my teacher, again she takes sides with no prior involvement, as soon as she was informed - my mum was summoned at the end of the day, I have no idea what was said but I think she basically told them to hold the fuck back as the issue went away the very next day.

Nothing changed, and the deputy kept deliberately doing things to spite me such as moving the bully to the seat behind me, and so on. It was at the point even the bully thought he'd be expelled, and my parents wished the same, but of course it never happened. Quite a few people in the school knew what was going on but couldn't do anything to support me. My mum even volunteered there and to this day is a patron of the associated church (RC school), which added insult to injury.
Some years later I was diagnosed as having Asperger's, one day my mum bumped into my Y6 teacher there as a class mass was going on. Silly bint asked how I was doing, and was fucking mortified when my mum responded 'he was diagnosed Asperger's actually'.

I only wish I could have told the fat cow myself.

I wish someone would have sooner known I was autistic, because I'd fucking well have had their jobs for it, the heartless corrupt twats.

Excuse my rant, but that issue can't really be put to pasture.

The other side of the coin are those teachers who indiscriminately "diagnose" children with no correct procedures.   Mrs Rocker's first-born was apparently "dyslexic" and "unlikely to succeed".   Funny how he has managed to run a huge printing press operation, rebuild his house and operate nationwide computer networks for a living ever since.   Apparently this supposition was based upon his tendency to write some letters of the alphabet back to front when he was 10.

Still no e-mail or Internet in the office. BT Openbreach think they might have someone available to fix it.... tomorrow.

On the other hand, it is less stressed without the facility.

I'm convinced that most 'issues' kids have are just crap teachers/parents making excuses for not doing things properly.

So do I. It would be cheaper, for a start.

There were no labels when I was younger. I was either called thick, disruptive or a menace.

You’d be surprised how many cars I saw driving around with no lights on at all!

No I wouldn't.  See it all the time WTF is wrong with people?

Nowt changed then :D

I was called disruptive too. Oddly just after an idiot headteacher put me back down to my normal year (I was about to go two years up at eight years old) and I was slightly* bored due to knowing everything they were pretending to teach.  I still blame her for my crap education as she used up my lifetime's tolerance for crap teachers.

Schools, a place where you might learn but only despite the teachers best efforts.

IMO, just because someone doesn't fit in with society's measurement of 'normal', by doing really well at maths and science for instance doesn't mean there is anything wrong with them, they might just have a brain tuned to excel at something else.

For poor kids these days who are labelled with Autism, I once read somewhere that the current 'autistic spectrum' was devised by a man who used it to save children from the Nazis. By massively widening the definition and labelling these children, even though there was little or nothing wrong with them they were saved from the concentration camps. This definition is still used today to label children who might just look at the world differently to those who make the rules as to what 'normal' is.

It sucks. I think that yes a lot of these people might need a different type of learning but it's not them that's wrong it how and what we are teaching them.]

But that's just what I think.

I was also branded disruptive and a little shit, but they could never figure out how the disruptive clown always knew the answers and excelled at things you actually had to think about like technology the answer was I was bored and perhaps have the dreaded adhd but I never got tested theres no point, I even flummoxed the electronic tech teacher a few times once was when we were doing circuits from scratch, no one's worked including his, mine did though I had spotted the problem while making it and modified it and he couldn't figure out what was wrong, when I pointed it out his reaction was "how the fuck did you figure that out" he was a good bloke he bought his wankel engine that he was rebuilding for his Norton in for me to have a look at because he mentioned it in lesson and I knew what a wankel was and showed interest, when it was parents open evening he used to ask me to come in and show talents of building things while people walked around

Someone I know had this - quiet sensible little lad of about 10 whose teachers were desperate to get him diagnosed with ADHD because the school would get extra funding if he was - never mind what it'd do to the poor kid's chances.  Fortunately his mother basically told the school to GTF.

Bloody sodding network hardware.

Router for some reason has decided not to be a router, but be a bridge...but bridging from its WiFi to the switch for the wired network elsewhere in the house rather than the internet...and only for Windows machines. Android and Linux can see the outside world just fine.

No idea why it's decided to do this...nothing has changed, and it shouldn't even be possible to do what it's doing with this router.

Factory reset for everything involved I think and then see where we are...

I hate networking with a passion these days. At least back in the days when 10Base-T was the norm it usually worked or not...the faults these days are so much more random!

On the coffee topic, (late to the party I know) I hate it how I can buy 6 large Latte's from McDonalds - fill up with those card sticker things then the robbing arseholes ask me for 30p when I ask for a Large latte on my card full of stickers, why can't I have a free large? I can only have a regular free unless I pay 30p. Robbing arsewipes.

I do like a morning coffee on the way to work though.
