Allow me the first BAH HUMBUG of the season, if you would.  It will certainly not be the last.

A customer on Friday asked what our hours were over Christmas. I said we haven't decided and that I haven't had my summer holiday yet.

My colleague puts all those who mention the C word before December on a metaphorical naughty step. Two counts and they're out!

I think it’s a bit daft (and slightly disrespectful) places are turning on lights before Remembrance.

It bugs me also because it’s not even my birthday yet!

Rememberance is Nov 11th. There's at least another month after that before you need to start worrying about the other thing. ;)

The annual “let’s not do any work in December because it’s CHRISTMAS!” attitude that plagues Britain really used to piss me off. You are all sorts of pariah for trying to get people to do what they are paid to do, and thn everyone expects not to work for about a fortnight.

My overseas colleagues really couldn’t believe it, and have you ever tried to explain the ‘concept’ of half term to an American director in the context of why 75% of his staff asked for the same week off?

Got in the white Rover to start it and move it about a wee bit. Started first turn of the key. Went to push the clutch pedal in........ couldn't do it. I had no strength in my leg/foot to even push the clutch part way in. Utter fucker. Far from a happy bunny.

Most American directors don’t like the concept of workers having any time off period (as they would say -cocks). I worked for a yank company briefly but told them to stick it up their arses when they tried to tell me I couldn’t have three of the four weeks holiday in a year that they allowed me. They couldn’t understand why someone wouldn’t want to work for free just to make them even richer. It’s a large part of why America is such a messed up dysfunction shit of a country.

I read Slashdot regularly (US based, IT news website famed for it's reader commenting system from before it was something every site offered if anyone doesn't know) and it's interesting to read about the working cultures in different counties. Seems it's easy to "get yer ass canned" if the boss so much as takes a dislike to you in America so they end up not bothering taking their "vacation". Sounds like we have it pretty sweet here on the whole.

I was in work on Christmas Day last year, not for long I admit, but needed to check something was turned off..

My brother in law has had a couple of very good job offers in America ( Cambridge degree and Oxford DPhil) at about double his uk salary, but from what he's heard from existing employees they're working 12 hour days and few holidays with absolutely no flex i time. So no home life and no picking up the children from school.

His best gag is from when he was a post doc. One of his group ( an American PhD student ) asked why they weren't having July 4th off as a holiday!

Sigh... I knew I wouldn't last long. Got a note from some building company on both my cars (a circular to all cars parked in the area) to say they want to start work in the area where we are currently parking so can we not park there from next weekend, sorry for any inconvenience, yeah right, like you give a toss.

Looks like the Rover will need to be moved, again. And alternative parking found for the BMW.

Be easier to speak to the builders first? They might be happy for you just to shift them into a corner

I've finally taken the decision to sort myself out with some small wheels, settled on a 205 diesel or 1.1 petrol, something a bit tatty for around £600.can I find one? Can I fuck.

Well, I'll shift the Rover as its not easily start-able but might leave the BMW nearby, but yeah if I see the builders I'll have a word with them, though I doubt they'll be accommodating, don't know why, just a feeling.

Thing is, the road on which the spaces are found are on an access road to official parking for residents who live abive the shops on the high street.

Bought a new stop solenoid twelve days ago. What do I need to get on Monday ?  Yep ! Another one. What crap.

Yea, I know, not a huge deal. "Whip" it out, plunger out, stall it. Still a pain  in the arse.

Interesting.

Certainly not my experience of working with - and representing - frontline public service workers, who continue to provide said services throughout the "holiday period".

Nor mine, from decades of working in wholesale, in mostly food-related fields.  How about "Nobody can take holiday time for the whole of December"?  *Except of course the boss, who will be hosting his teenage kids for their school hols while Mum and Stepdad fly away to the sun.

Poverty is making me grumpy again, as it does every time I go to the Kings Lynn car auction.  Absolutely gorgeous 1941 Buick Straight 8 went for £14,800 - bloody bargain if you ask me, it was absolutely stunning.  Except that at the moment I'd struggle to raise a tenth of that (without taking out a massive bank loan, which would be stupid).

Try getting things done in the pampered financial services sector in this country.

Last year I worked 60 hour weeks over christmas, largely because all of our staff are students who piss off home. The only day off I had was christmas itself. Finished work at 11 on NYE, was in the pub by 10 past and back in work for 3 new years day.

A big contrast from what was meant to be my full time job at the time, where everyone stopped working a week before we were basically forced to take annual leave for most of december.

Is it your leg or the clutch that is knackered?

Neither is good I admit...
