What are you living with?

Been thinking about this for a while, but working out the Applejack Allegro's made me think of it again. For about 5 years the fuel gauge works on a full tank for about 100 miles then plummets to zero. I seem to remember it comes back, but I chickened out at the 240 mile mark despite apparently still having 13 litres or so left.

The Multipla has some things in the live with it category, rear windows and sunroof don't open (like that when we bought it) I looked for the fuses but the car doesn't match the hand book. The car runs cold but the thermostat is about £125 so bugger that.

Mrs the Princess's Panda is an Eleganza so obviously the heater has done an Eleganza and the quadrant that controls the temperature breaks leaving the air on cold. This has been bodged to be hot but gluing it in which will be removed come summer. The replacement apparently is over £1000!

My Jag S type puts a 'gearbox error' up when I start it from cold. A quick restart sorts it but I really need to get it sorted. It has also previously flashed up abs fault and I think they are related. Apart from the parking sensors which packed up shortly after I bought it. It also has a sticky light switch so a flash of the headlights often means a full dazzling for the other driver. Oh, and the wipers need replacing as they smear.

The cmax has a heated screen which only clears the passenger side. Aircon is kaput. Various trim has fallen off in the back.

Not too bad I suppose compared with other cars I have owned.

Fucking annoying trim rattles mainly, but also the clutch goes screeee right at the bottom if you press it slowly.

I'm ignoring that as it works perfectly fine.

Massive problems.
Not.

Probably a serious gerbox issue......started making a rattling noise in gear, then stopped making the noise in gear and now only does it in neutral

unless i wobble the gearstick then it stops

Cranks for a while sometimes when it's really cold, probably a bad battery

slightly off centre steering wheel

it's fine, i'm sure it's fine

i hope

The diesel Borat is living with a flashing glow plug warning light because I insisted on using LED tail lights. Also an offside passenger door which sometimes agrees to work with the rest of the central locking.

We're a remarkably tolerant bunch on the whole.  I've had a lifetime of living with assorted minor faults in cars; some of them less minor!  At the moment Huggy is the one with the minors.  The electric locks don't work (I've disconnected them inside the doors so at least they lock on the key); one of the electric windows is very sticky, especially going up; the upholstery is at best poor; the horn and power seat have had to be isolated with a switch under the dash, because if left "on" they drain the battery; but for actual driving, it's still bloody lovely.  I'd be delighted not to have to sell, but I don't have the ability, facilities or funds to look after it any more.

My bmw fuel gauge doesnt work. Been like that since I got it. Just fill to the top, reset trip counter then do 300 miles max. Last time according to tank size I still had over 10 litres left. I also hate the stupid looking aftermarket chromed headlights. They look horrid on a dark green car, even worse since I gave it a big clean and polish.

Carlton - ABS kicks in at low speed when braking and turning right. Can’t find the fault, but it doesn’t affect it driving normally.

Landrover D3 - currently has an oil leak from the vac pump which it’s done for a while, it drips onto the exhaust crossover pipe and burns off.

Manta - rear heated screen doesn’t work. MEH.

discovery 1 - Everything. It’s a heap. But I’m tolerant of said heap.

and mrs Suttys 2018 Astra.... well that’s just an Astra.

Just on the Clio; vague steering, creaky steering, steering wheel off centre (couldn’t remove it from its splines without a special puller I haven’t got) squealing clutch release bearing, squeaky brakes, slight clutch judder when cold, tired engine mountings, perhaps a hint of wheel bearing rumble which just started yesterday, chattering speedo cable which causes the needle to bounce around, and an occasional knocking noise going round corners.

It’s also got no interior lighting at all, apart from the glovebox light so I’ve got a battery operated night light on the dashboard, oh and the wipers don’t self park.

As well as that, it’s an absolute shed and looks like it was dragged out of a scrapyard backwards!

Good engine though...

Bongo - intermittent glow plug(s) fault, starts on the key but after a few secs can run lumpy and get a bit of unburnt diesel smoke. Easy workaround is hold revs up after starting for 15 secs and it doesn’t happen. Needs a CV joint too on OSF at some point.

All the moderns are fine, moderns gonna modern

Heated front screen (one of the perks of driving an old Ford) doesn't work, nearside front and rear alloys slightly buckled so get a lovely vibration when going over 60mph. Slight judder when reversing, not sure what this is, the clutch isn't slipping in any forward gears just struggles in reverse!

It will get fixed, one day!

On the Corolla I've been ignoring leaks from multiple orifices, about the only thing that hold it's liquid are the gearbox and washer bottle. The 2nd gear synchro also think it's in a Ferrari box and wouldn't cooperate at all when the oil is cold. If it's a really wet day, on cold start the accessory belt area would emit noises which go away once the engine is warm. The suspension make noise too, clunking when hitting a bump while turning left at high speed. There's probably more as well that I can't recall.

2005 Citroen C4 1.6 SX.

-Almost every piece of trim is attempting to detach itself. Because French?

-Sunvisor always tries to detach itself when I return it to the up position.

-Aircon non-op.

-Speed limiter non-op (zero fucks given).

-No DAB or phone connectivity. (No usb,  aux out or even a tape deck).

-Desperately needs a 6th gear. Maybe a 7th. Two and a bit years of ownership and I still occasionally reach for that gear that isn't there.

-Boot lets in water occasionally.

-Steering wheel wobbles like it needs the wheels balancing, then fixes itself for a months before returning. Happens maybe 4 times a year?

-It probably needs rear pads as they're noisy for a few moments in the morning then STFU for the rest of the day.

-Cat N and the front hasn't exactly been repaired to factory standards.

-Seems to attract punctures. It's had 5 tyres in 2 and a bit years, except the crappy budget on the near rear which has somehow survived.

- It's neither fast nor decent on fuel (probably mid/high 30s mpg).

- It isn't a Carina E, or anything interesting in any way to me.

- It's painted a fairly nice dark metallic blue. When dirty (most of the time) it's 100% doom blue.

But;

-Heater works. My old Fiesta motorised heater valve thing jammed on cold in winter then the replacement jammed on hot in summer. Misery ensued.

-Cruise control how I love thee. This could be a negative as I doubt I could live without it now.

- It looks kinda funky.

-I don't have to spend hours of my life on the internet trying to find even basic parts and pricing up shipping from friggin' San Diego, Australia etc or somewhere absurd like that.

-I can park it anywhere and no gucks fiven (or "ducks given" as auto correct woukd have it).

Almera needs aircon regassing and the number 4 button on the stereo unit is hard to press. Minor things, thank heavens.

Rover mini: Squeeky rear subframe mounts, tightened up but think the captive nuts have detached from inside the heel board

Wife's Yaris: Aircon needs a re-gas

Honda Camino: carb always blocking so keep a guitar string in my topbox so I can pull over and unblock so I'm not stranded.

Mitsubishi Gallant: Idle is a little erratic but tuned it a little and not enough to bother me, also pulls a little to the left.

Vauxhall Mokka family Hack: on a 5 year guarantee which means I have to reluctantly get it serviced at Vauxhall every year to maintain its guarantee

God where do I start. Every car I own has issues, even the supposedly nice(r) ones.

 - 2010 A4: horrendous clutch judder at times from take off. Requires a clutch+flywheel job to fix and so been ignoring it for the last 40k+ miles. Oh and the suspension is a bit slack after 191k miles. Looking at £1k for the clutch+flywheel. Cambelt will be due soon too.

 - 2002 Laguna II: often likes having Renault faults like loosing contact with throttle body and other stuff randomly. Currently the automatic gearbox is giving me the most stress. Previously lost all gears twice in succession. Yesterday it was clunking while in gear and sat in stationary traffic. Then later on it started clunking occasionally between gears. I'm £700 into the car while only done 900 miles since bringing it back to life and spending that.

 - 2000 Boxster: Coolant is leaking. I think it's the coolant tank split. Also top mounts need replacing as they creak. You also need to hit the dash to get the ignition to fully switch off and ignition lock to engage. Aircon is a bit noisy too, so probably needs a regas. Probably a good £800 needs still spending on it mostly in labour - already spent £600 on parts that are sat in the car waiting to be fitted.

 - 1974 MGB GT: Really the only issue of note is that the fuel gauge either works perfectly or give a random reading. You need to tally up with the miles since last fill up and what the gauge is reading to get an accurate picture. Probably my most working car.

 - 1973 Triumph Dolomite Sprint: Currently in pieces while it is being welded up. Too much to list what is wrong! Not going to add up what it needs. Apart from parts, panels and me welding, it will need a respray - even if only partial.

Heated rear screen doesn't work, the only luxury, neither does the speedo. Back box fell off.

Tries to kangaroo at low revs. Nothing much else to go wrong with a BASE.

ML- oil leak from the oil cooler, TADTS, apparently . Funny that ours didn't until it had a new turbo and injector seals last year. It's a big job to get to the cooler so I'll wait for something else to go then get it done at the same time. I see it as self changing oil and top up 1/2 litre a week.

Bulb warnings , every time you start it comes up with " 4 messages"  2 for brake lights, 2 for sidelights- all work perfectly, but you have to cancel each message off before the screen will show anything else.

Fiat 500- rear wiper does 2 wipes every time it's started, done this for about 8 years- we'd miss it if it was fixed.

E class- outer led tail lights  randomly go out, sometimes together, sometimes individually, tapping them sometimes brings them back. It's gone through an MOT and Council test like it and neither mentioned it. Just replace them, I hear you say...

£240 per side !!!! There are pattern ones available from Germany but they put the bulb failiure light up apparently whereas the non working one doesn't . There's a YouTube vid of someone cutting into the lamp and resoldering a joint, I'm wary of fucking up the indicators and brake lights .

Just look at the back of any 2013-16 E classes you see and nearly all of them will have at least one side out.

And people used to take the piss out of Lucas electrics.

Daily modern Hyundai SUV - faultless.

W123 230E - steering that is so vague and sloppy that I’ve gone off driving the thing after more than ten years of ownership. Steering system and geometry are good, the steering box has been tightened up but I suspect it’s worn beyond adjustment.

W124 200E - crunchy second gear, needs time to change up quietly from 1st to 2nd but works perfectly changing down from 3rd to 2nd. Does that mean the synchromesh is ok?

2003 Forester:

  • Nearly impossible to get into gear from cold; yes, ideally I'd warm it up to operating temperature before moving off each and every time as I know Subarus prefer that, but sometimes it's not really practical... has got no worse over 20,000 miles, though.
  • Brakes make a kind of 'wubbing' sound when slowing down from about 50 - have had the calipers rebuilt twice which seems to improve it for about a week; previous owner seemingly replaced the discs all round so not sure if that was an attempt to fix the same problem. Hey, it stops and it's been verified okay at MOT time... now just ignoring it.
  • Wind noise is absolutely deafening anywhere above 40mph. That's probably the one thing that really bugs me about this car; I know it's kinda a Subaru trademark, but I don't get what benefit they think having no door pillars brings.
  • The stupid alarm system that re-arms the immobiliser 30 secs after unlocking. Carefully timed to activate just as I'm about to turn the key in the ignition, thus setting the alarm off...
  • ...and necessitating much pressing of the button on the key to turn off the alarm, lock the car, then open it again: which in turn has now worn out the micro switch on the (lone) keyfob. It's a really strange single-button jobber that seems to be unobtainium too, even through Subaru UK. So I'm often to be found in a car park repeatedly pointing the keyfob at it and swearing because it won't lock or unlock when needed (often in the rain when I'm carrying five bags of shopping).
  • And the alarm sets itself off all the time, for no reason, often quite late at night.
  • Large and spreading crack across the massive sunroof. Ignoring it has not, so far, proved an effective remedy.
  • Stereo CD unit is rather fiddly with tiny buttons and no steering wheel controls; I have a Pioneer head unit and adaptor ready to fit, but it appears most of the dashboard and ventilation controls need to be removed to do so; thus far, it's seemed too daunting...
  • ...and I also need to replace the blown dashboard lights while I'm at it, I guess.
  • Oh, and the air con doesn't work either, never has. Just needs a regas M9, etc. etc.
  • Front o/s sidelight sometimes works, sometimes doesn't and needs a thump with the flat of my hand to make it come on again.
  • Black pleather facing on the driver's seat bolster has come away, leaving the off-white cloth backing - every now and again I colour it in with a black marker pen, which is about the height of my car maintenance and repair regime these days.

Other than that, it's perfect though!

2005 Yaris:

  • Whistling noise from the n/s front at anything over 20mph - as I piled it nose-first into a ditch one snowy morn in 2013, and the front panels and arch liners no longer line up.
  • Very, very slow rear wiper.
  • The electric cooling fan comes on immediately when started, and may or may not go off while driving. I've replaced the temp sender unit to no avail, and the HBOL gives no clue since it's a late run-out model, and NOTHING matches their pics. Similarly, I've not been able to get anything from a motor factor to fit this car first time.
  • Stereo controls on the steering wheel haven't worked since I replaced the head unit with an aftermarket Kenwood capable of taking an aux-in; two sets of control adaptors failed to fit, so I just gave up.
  • Looks like it's been attacked by a herd of triffids. Bodywork is scuffed and scored all over, with bonus handprints from when I did a quick and dirty brake fluid change and pawed all over the bonnet and driver's door with fluid-wet gloves...

But it's needed little more than service items, plus the usual tyres, exhausts, a battery and a few bulbs over fifteen years/120,000 miles, so it's churlish of me to complain too much here...

MKIV Golf Estate that everyone hates.  Non-working rear wiper.  Particularly annoying on a flat-backed estate, TADTS.  No cruise control.  Dreadful bodywork.  Needs new front tyres.  Small chip in the windscreen.  Slight issue with driver-side seat.  Currently has a boost leak (as of Thursday), bit of noise turning left from somewhere underneath, not *quite* getting up to temperature (but within 10 degrees) and probably a few other things... Nothing serious - I'll get the boost leak fixed asap.  Car had its belts done the other day and I reckon it's just a loose hose.  I'll have a look later and if I can't seal it, I'll get the garage to seal it.

Suzuki GT250 which started/ran on left hand cylinder only so needs it's 125cc bollocks revving off it to initially move or it dies - then the right hand cylinder chimes in during the manoeuvre all hell breaks loose with the sudden appearance of a 250cc of revving two stroke.  Not for the feint hearted or those of a nervous disposition.

Amazingly neither of our cars have anything wrong with them to just live with, must be the first time in a long while. I mean things that have gone wrong rather than how the cars were from new.

It has made me think though that stuff that was broken and didn't work when I bought the car I can just live with, anything that goes wrong, I have to fix as I can't stand it...

Van:

Brake pad wear warning system has a mind of its own so the brake warning light flickers on and off as it sees fit.

Fuel tank vent line collapsed or blocked, so filling it with fuel takes about 15 minutes.

Heater blower is dead.

Xantia:

Heater recirculation flap is stuck about halfway.  This makes the heater noisy and significantly slows down the demisting process.

Rampant clear coat peel.

Worn CV joint(s?) cause a bit of vibration at full throttle.

Two dead bulbs in the stereo.

Invacar:

Heater is less than useless, though I do have plans afoot to improve that...not actually a defect though so not sure if it counts.

Let me see,

Boot light works about once a year

Fuel consumption figures are way off, think it's the clocks as OBD shows correct figures

Remote in the key doesn't work

Locks are faulty (TADTS) so interior light doesn't stay on long/lights on warning doesn't work

Other than that it's just deferred maintenance, need to get off my arse and do pads/discs/CV joints etc.

Carb on the AX is being weird, doesn't like hot starting, and stinks of fuel when it has been sitting with the engine off but warm. I'm going to get a HBOL and sort at some point, but as I mostly do 2.5 mile cold journeys, it is not urgent.
