Mega rare Opel Astra with the 1.2 powerhouse

357739732_10209879810989540_896560652508

Meets my minimum brown content requirements with ease

357528295_10209879801309298_369231046569

Failed its MoT on some welding (doesn't sound too serious looking at the test) but it's from 1983 so SOD MOT and be dammed. Inexplicably only £1250 which seems aight for a genuine slice of extinct street furniture

https://www.facebook.com/marketplace/item/1506663796798120/

As far as I can see in this pictures it seems quite rotten or previously repaired in the usual places unfortunately (under the headlamps/indicators, the wings, sills, rear arches). This one is especially worrying, my own 1.2 failed on rot there and after a bit of poking most of the footwell turned out to be toast:

Quote

Nearside Front Lower Suspension component mounting prescribed area excessively corroded significantly reducing structural strength suspension arm (5.3.6 (a) (i))

Also, this may put me at risk of sounding like an ignorant foreigner, but were rear seat belts already mandatory in Britain in 1983?

Quote
  • Nearside Rear Seat belt missing (7.1.2 (a))
  • Offside Rear Seat belt missing (7.1.2 (a))

It doesn't look like it had seat belts originally:

No they weren’t.  I had to specify them as an extra on my new  (company car) Cavalier in 1984. When it was replaced in 1986 rear belts were mandatory on new vehicles, so I didn’t have to ask for them to be fitted.

Wearing  rear belts was not mandatory until 1991.

you’re right. They didn’t become mandatory until 1991

EDIT: seat belt wearing.

The above post is correct. 1986 for actually having them.

I wonder if that was the reason for the retest 4 days later as it’s the only thing that’s different.

Also tester is a clown. It’s obvious the car has been round the clock.

Some real gems around at the moment, if you're handy with a spanner.Wish I wasn't such an inept mechanic so I could afford to buy something good.

This might be the coolest thing I've ever seen, actually

3.6-litre V6. Off the road for 20 years but looks pretty good to me. £2750 which sounds like a mega barg

https://www.facebook.com/marketplace/item/1390853538151784/

I've been seriously looking at MGBs recently (I'm approaching middle-age, sue me) and this looks like a belter tbh

It's all sorts of brown, but it's also in the arse-end of Wales. Off the road for 20 years again, but does look fundamentally sound, honest and appealing. £2750 again, which doesn't get you much in the MG world these days

Those 'B's' are very nice - look very good. Introduced 1965 - upper glasshouse styled by Pininfarina. Funny thing - BMC/BLMC would put a hatchback on a sports car...but not on any small saloon...😆

That was on eBay the other day, only made £1,040.  I was tempted but I have no time to get to Shropshire and back in the foreseeable so had to pass.

Always been in the same family. Been off the road for 3 years. Abs and  air conditioning that does not work. Plus power steering, on board computer, electric mirrors, electric windows. There is part of a two hitch too.

Vauxcast or coscast head?   One goes porous.  Used to be a company that repaired them.

Either way it's the engine to have.

Any one for the Festival of the Unexpected?

Can we have a 'golden buzzer' on here where the poster gets 1,000 'likes' for putting this up?

Get it running, fix the brakes and run it home on cherry. If you get pulled, tell VOSA that you're a showman and you'll be ok*.

You can also scour the streets for cars out of tax and simply take them home - innit.

Apparently RHD pick ups ,Hilux in particular are in  great demand in Ukraine.
Stick  a dummy in the passenger seat and the Russians shoot “the driver”.
