Ah, motorway remoulds. That takes me back to the time when one of those which had done less than 100 miles blew out on me. A hole the size of my fist right in the centre of the tread. Sounds like they weren't the best quality remoulds, but never again!

Since 2004 remould have to be tested to the same specs as new tyres (speed and loading). I use 'em on the Rangie as I just pootle around in it.

Now you come to mention it, it was mainly ~Motorway remoulds Dad fitted to the Cortina, and they'd regularly have sidewall punctures which dad blamed on the shite Dunbartonshire roads ruining the tyres, and that there was no way that he'd pay more for "better" non-remoulds because they'd just get punctured too. Funnily enough, once he'd been forced (by the Cortina being written off) to by a car with non-motorway remoulds on it, the sidewall punctures disappeared!

I'll never forget one of their remoulds coming in to the tyre depot I worked at, straight from the back of their lorry with a nail through it. I think Motorway are also the ones who (possibly) still have an underground tyre fire still burning/smouldering away after quite a while.

You know on the the X300 XJ Jaguars the XJR is super charged and therefore much faster than the rest of the X300 range? Does the previous XJ40 XJR model just have the standard 4.0 NA engine as found in the standard XJ and fancy body kit or does it have any extra oomph (different cam, exhaust etc)?

I'd like a rev counter for my VW T2.

If I lok in the VW mags I seem to have the choice of a couple of massive devices marked up to 10 or 12 thousand revs.

Seeing as mine has a limiter at 4,500rpm, I think that the needle would just flutter about in the corner.

Anyone know if there's anything about in scrappers with 4,500 or 5,000 at the red line?

Ideally I'd like it to be about 3 inches diameter so that it will fit the hole in the dash, but bigger stuff could be put in a pod on the top.

Thanks,

Diesel stuff will suit you revs wise, but older diesel stuff (that you could easily separate the revcounter from the cluster) tends to run the revcounter off the alternator, and they are wildly inaccurate especially if transplanted, but you're often able to adjust them with a variable resistor on the back.

EDIT: thinking about it you'll be running either a dynamo or those crazy VW air cooled moon alternators, neither of which will have the pulsed output for a revcounter. You could probably wire it to the usual feed on the coil and hope you have enough adjustment, there is often quite a range.

Rear windows:

When did they stop winding down flush with the door top?

Do they wind down flush or is it only certain models that don't ?

Do they not wind down fully as they will fowl the wheel arch?

Was driving about with heater on BBQ setting and windows down and noticed this and it got me wondering

My old stuff does but range rover and sovereign don't and I think I've noticed it with other cars too

Once they did away with rear quarter light windows

Ditto Cortina rear windows. Beleive me, though, after 7 years of being carted about in various Heralds, suddenly having rear doors and window winders that you controlled yourself was bloody luxury!

I always assumed it was some old 'safety' feature to stop kids climbing out of the window, a hangover from before rear seatbelts were compulsory.

Or perhaps I made that up.

Boring answer is usually...

Do they not wind down fully as they will fowl the wheel arch?

Look at the shape of the inner door (as opposed to the shutline, there's often quite a difference) and just imagine where the window would go.

I can remember as a kid feeling very short changed by the fact that the rear windows in Dad's Renault 16 stopped a good 6" short of the bottom, but then again if they hadn't I probably would have climbed out.....

range rover has a quarter light, I think estate cars tend to have them more than saloons

I thought child lock but if so wouldnt it be switch off able too?

Any of you fine people bought a car with a V5C(W) ? I thought it was written in some sort of Middle Earth jibberish but infact the (W) means it's written entirely in Welsh on one side and English on the other.

The thing is there is no green slip. One side of the red and blue part is in Welsh and the other side in English. The part that the new keeper fills in is again one side in Welsh and the other in English.

My question is : when I sell the car does the new owner fill in his/her details and I send the whole V5C off or do I hand them back the red and blue part ? The car is taxed but the front red and blue part doesn't have a bar code.

Peugeot 206. 2003. See that STOP lamp on the dashboard? What the buggering FUCK is that supposed to do? When is it supposed to come on?

Thanks in advance.

It normally comes on with another warning light. I think it can be low oil pressure/level, low coolant, overheating or low brake fluid among other things.

Cheers Richard, noted for future reference. This one is coming on by itself. Anyway, I've just found out in the last 2 minutes that this means one of the doors isn't shut properly on a car with the 2002 BSI software version.

French shit. Laudable to have a warning for a door not shut, after all, it is a potential safety issue. However, to have it use the same indicator as the OMG FUCKED ENGINE light is pish.

Daughters first C3 flashed all the interior lights to say that a door wasn't shut. They drove back from Manchester to Washington like that, being unaware of what it was and thought something was broken. They had only bought the car the day before taking it to Manchester airport for an outbound flight.

Plymouth Roadrunner / Superbird. V cool.

Indeed. I thought the carryhandles at the back were part of the scenery, not part of the car.

Just been on Youtube watching Creep by Radiohead. If it's not a stupid question, why are there "suggestions" on the right hand side of the screen to click on Korn, The Pretenders and Top Gear & Jeremy Clarkson?

As i understand it, theres some sort of memory type thing on ootoob, as well as sponsored links, and record company linkage.

So it could be that Korn and Radiohead are on the same label (either here or in yankland), and that you've previously searched for the Northern Car Based Humour of J Clarkson - so it's "remembered" you.

What gets on my tits is the adverts in front of your chose video...VEVO branded stuff is the worst, and the advert is not connected to the chosen subject....ie i chose to listen to "War Ensemble" by Slayer, and the preceding advert was for those whining twats "The Killers" new CD. Not interested at all, and I would assume that 95% of Slayer fans wouldn't be either. But you can't skip it!!

Why is it sometimes when you type stuff on your computer keyboard that when you correct a mistake it sort of jumps into a space and shortens the rest of the message in front of it? For example if I typed 'I would likean Allegro' then corrected it, it would turn into 'I would like n Allegro'.

Secondly, if I smoked one 38th of what TooSavvy was on, how many weeks would it take to recover? :D

If you press the "Insert" button near at the top right of the keyboard it toggles between inserting and overwriting. Normally the default is insert, but some web pages seem to default to overwrite.

I've fucked myself over buying tools in the past, so double checking this time.

Is this the correct way to measure for the correct size socket? I don't have one big enough for the zx rear hub but so will have to buy one
