If tomorrow goes well and I want to offload the Audi in Glasgow can anyone recommend a scrapyard?

I think the BM is in Govanhill / Queen's Pk so ideally not too far from there.

I may wish to keep the alloys if that's a factor.

Thanks

There's a couple is Paisley I know of. One's just off Great Western Road and the other's close to the Airport not far from the old St Mirren stadium at Love Street.

Now if I buy it, call my insurers (hastings) and tell them I need it on the MID pronto can I then buy some tax online?

And If I can, will it get me home without a tug from the rozzers?

Problem will be that the disc will go to the current owner's address. As far as I know you can't change the address/ownership details on the website, has to be done at a PO.

From what I understand there isn't an easy way of doing it.

You could insure it over the phone or online easy enough, then get the insurance co to email you a certificate of insurance, then go to a PO and tax it the old fashioned way, but if you're 'out and about' getting a printed certificate might present problems and it obviously depends on doing the deed during normal PO working hours.

I've got that 'new car fever' before (or everytime) I see a car that I want. It's just best to clear it out of your head and do it without worrying about the legalities, I'm sure it'll be there in a week. ;)

That's a scunner Tayne. It is annoying when the seller can't be bothered to sell the car they're advertising.

You don't know anyone with trade insurance who could tax it for you?

Posted

Why worry about the tax?

As long as its MOT'd/insured where's the prob?

If you get stopped, & reported to DVLA, they will offer Court proceedings to fine you, backdated to the day you bought it.

So, 1 days tax due -superceded by the fact you taxed it, for the month, a few days later.

At the moment you tax it, those few days later- any possible action is effectively nullified.

State doesnt really care -as long as you DO pay -eventually.

I want to replace the 8J X 18 H2 ET43 alloys on a 2006 Audi A6 S Line with 16'' rims.

There are three types listed in the parts catalogue...

7.5J X 16 ET45

7J X 16 H2 ET42

7J X 16 H2 ET35

Which of these will cause me the least amount of grief?

I iz confused.

All of those rims should fit fine.

The offset is slightly different, but not a lot and its less than the reduction in rim width in all cases ..... Hopefully that makes sense.

Posted

^Strictly they should carry an "E" mark to be legal, but that mark can only be used on like-for-like bulbs, ie filament for filament - so you can't have a conforming LED bulb for that fitting. Practically, however, any bulb that gives out sufficient light will pass an MOT.

Posted

Those lamps are incredibly cheap, my biggest worry with them would be the hassle of early failure, and it's probably better to look for the ones with the LEDs arranged radially so that the lamp is illuminated evenly as it would by a filament, rather than a small angled dazzling beam.

Posted

That type of bulb is more likely to produce a "circle" in the lens as opposed to lighting the whole thing

Any joy Tayne?

None at all.

I'd called the seller last night (thurs) at 5pm on his telesafe number, his VM was a bit crackly and I feared he might not get the message. I called agin at 2030 and left the same message, he called back 15mins later.

I wanted to see the car today, he was trying to figure out what he could juggle with his work schedule and told me he'd call me back just after 8am to arrange a time.

Guess who didn't call me.

I've tried his telesafe no and his mobile (with and without 141) and got nowhere.

I looked at a couple of 325s, a 330 which had been sold, was offered a compact or an ancient 5 series.

Wasted day all told.

Which brings me to the next car.

This ones down in peebles and the seller now informs me it has no tax. His insurance has lapsed so he can't retax.

Now if I buy it, call my insurers (hastings) and tell them I need it on the MID pronto can I then buy some tax online?

And If I can, will it get me home without a tug from the rozzers?

Next option is to ask Duncan if I can stash it at his for a week.

Dashes off to send PM...

Off course you can store it here...no probs and I can tax it on my trade policy if you want as well :D

Genuine retarded question...

Anything I should know before swapping the radio in my car? I just want to test the radio in my spare parts box before I sell it someone on the BX forum. I has code for it, which is probably a good start. Is it as simple as pulling it out and unplugging?

LED rear lamp bulbs. The ones that fit into standard holders. Are they road legal?

Like these ones:

Caution. If attempting to use on a more modern vehicle with a "Can-Bus" system, it works on resistance in the circuit, and as such, the LED isn't the same as a filament bulb, and can cause flickering, bulb failure warnings, and ECU failures.

Yes, just unplug. Make sure you have code for both the one you want to test, and yours that you'll be putting back in. There'll be a connector on the back, I'd imagine BXs are too old to have a variation on ISO but it'll just be one or two multi-pin plugs with a release clip.

My question that it didn't seem worth starting a new thread for:

I appear to have lost my V5. I want new car soon, and so will sell my car. I notice the DVLA now charge £25 for a V5, are there any loopholes to get it for nowt?

Back in t'day, I used to apply for a new one every 6 months for free when I taxed my car, since I could never be arsed to look for it.

If you have the new keepers bit and send that off with the form it won't cost you anything.

My son has texted that his Volvo XC90 has a faulty alarm. Garage want £90 just to investigate. Can we just remove the relevant fuse?

Posted

Almost certainly not, it'll all be linked to the immobiliser, relevant ECU, and other unpleasant boxes of witchcraft.

Posted

Bloody newfangled crap. I'll find out what the exact problem is when he comes round this evening. I think it is just that every time he gets in it tells him that the alarm has triggered but it hasn't. Is there a way to reset to factory settings?

Posted

Not sure what's involved [other than the obvious] if you disconnect, and then re-connect the battery. You may need radio codes etc. It may not help. but worth a go.

I used to have them in my Fiat which had 2 × stop/tail on each side. I had 1 × LED bulb and 1 × standard bulb in each side and you couldn't tell which was which with the lens in place. The difference in response time was perceptible though, i.e. the LEDs light up fractionally quicker.

That was my first thought, also low battery voltage, so I lent him my battery charger and he removed the battery, lugged it up two flights of stairs to his flat and charged it overnight. At least I hope that has happened! And I am assuming that the fault has reoccurred after refitting the battery.

My old 940 estate had a fault code thingy, I presume this more modern bit of tat has a more sophisticated fault diagnosis software?

Posted

i'd ring roung local "known" garages and ask if anyone of them has the software, I know that both Launch and Actia can get into these in some depth. I'd look under "vehicle diagnostics" in ye olde yellowing pages, you might even find a "mobile" bloke, who'll come to you.

Are camper vans cheaper in the winter or do they hold their value? I would have thought that they drop a fair bit TBH as everyone offloads them at the end of summer and there is a glut on the market.

Posted

When people realise summer has gone, the arse absolutely drops out of the market. it's not so much more people selling, its less people buying.

EG last year a mate and I converted a few T4 and T5 vans. Took about 3 weeks to a month to turn one round, and they would generally have sold before they were finished (from the advert for the previous van: "That one is sold, but this one will be done in a few weeks"), or at worst take about a week or two to sell. Come the end of October, we had two vans finished. They were 2 of the nicer ones we'd done, priced more or less the same as the rest. One took 2 months to sell and the other took about 5 months.

OK, so I saw this as a slight get-out on the doovla site.... but I'm not registering a new keeper? At this point I will mention that I've sent off the V5 ages ago with a change of address, but I reckon I got it back all correct - I can remember seeing the form with my new address on.

Can I send the green slip off with the form and say "I changed my address and never got the V5 back, can I have another copy please?" - will they still do this for freebies?
