This is more of a stupid owner rather then a stupid question but I just bought a bottle of Castrol Valvemaster and was tipping a bit into the tank of the Cortina when the plastic ring that the bottle tops attaches to fell of the spout and straight into the tank...

If it makes you feel any better Trig, I did exactly the same thing years ago with a bottle of Redex and a mini. Fortunately mini tanks dont have a neck as such and I was able to retreive it using a fish net from the local pet shop, squeezed to fit the filler neck.

Imagine how that looked to the neighbours, fishing in the fuel tank with a net?! :D

Thanks Volksangyl, but I'm guessing Northern Wastes is well beyond Watford Gap - I'm in Hertfordshire. Otherwise that would have been perfick!

If you don't mind an hours drive to the Norfolk/Cambs border there is plenty of shite here you can tinker with (Also our housemate actually has some mechanical skill so would be able to help. I'm more that that looks ok, breakdown on the test drive school). A bit light on French stuff (BL mostly) but there is a poorly Citroen AX that needs attention.

EDIT: Removed an approtrophy from hours beofre Mrs the Princess sees it and kills me.

Why can I only find three rings per piston piston rings for my 1275cc Marina engine? There are definatly four rings per piston (3 normal ones and a funny castle-top type ring at the bottom) but the kit I bought and all others have two normal rings and the funny other one.

Posted

It's not for that particular engine then. The normal is 2 ordinary rings and the oil control/scraper ring - the castle-topped one - but some A-series engines have 3 and one, but usually the smaller bore engines. Are the rings roughly the same diameter?

They are, it's just there is an additional groove. I think it is the normal BL thing of making a change mid way through as the engine is a late (1979) non-A plus one.

Problem is I can't find the 4 ring sets online.

Could you lose engine power through a worn clutch?

If the clutch is slipping you should be able to hear the engine revs going faster than the car. Try releasing the clutch with the hand brake on.

Hello I wonder if anyone can help me out on this one, I have a car imported to Ireland in 1993 from the UK and I was wondering if there is any chance of finding out what the old British plate would have been?

Posted

Type the chassis number into google. Some of the dealer network databases are indexed, having escaped into the wild as it were.

It's on your VLC.

If you have the old style logbook it won't be on it, so you'll need to ring the DOE in Shannnon. Or go to the local motor tax office and sweet talk whoever's behind the counter...

Any DiVLAds experts on here please?

Had a £70 SORN fine because my car was spotted 'being kept or used on a public road' and although it WAS being kept in a public carpark (for two sodding days!) it was NOT on the road stated on the letter which is probably 1/4 mile away or so.

Can I contest this fine on the basis of that (wrong information) or am I forced to pull my pants down and cough up seventy rips to the thieving tw@ts?

I've read of loads of people who've contested crap like this and got away with it. go on Pepipoo.com, they seem to give decent advice despite the frankly bizarre domain name.

Can someone tell me the name of that breakers that has all the CAT C writeoffs? It has a website that someone mentioned on here in connection with an SD1. Fucked if I can remember its name.

Cheers

You need to speak to Margret, she's the best

It's the hoseclip and yes it is about as accessible as the picture shows! I think it's a centre punch clamp so no worm screw :( , I can just about reach the mechanism from behind but can't work out how to remove it

That socket's too big Trig!

I'd just try chewing at it with some pliers like these:

It would surrender eventually, just take care of the rubber, and replace it with a topical jubilee clip.

Posted

Deffo the side cutters, but make certain you get a PROPER Jubilee clip, one that actually works..... to put back on.

I have suddenly developed very squeaky / creaky track rods on the T2.

Chap what mechanics it tells me that nothing will fall off or break, but as my next journey other than for petrol will be a couple of hundred miles to the South coast do you think its a smart move to replace them?

Posted

I'd probably chance it, but I don't want to be the one to tell you to chance it.

If they're gonna have you worrying, get them changed anyway, they're going to need doing whatever.

Next:

Car bought with HGF, now home and head removed, how does one tell whether it needs the head skimming or not?

If it is done, must it be stripped first? (Looks to be plenty enough meat before the valves would be touched if they were left in.)

Posted

When we had the C*rsa head skimmed we left all the valves etc in place. No idea if you can tell whether a head's been skimmed or not (unless you have a micrometer or whatever they use) but for the cost I wouldn't risk not having it done tbh.

Has anyone bought stuff off French Ebay before?

Basically I want these but I have no idea how to get them.

The problem I have is the listing doesn't seem to say anything about postage, plus I sent him a Google-translated question asking how much it's be to send them to the UK, and he hasn't replied. USEFUL.

Thanks!

Google probably asked him if his wallpaper had fish on it.

Try: Combien ça coute d'envoyer a L'Angleterre?

how much does it cost to send to England?

He should get the jist of it unless he can't be asked to go down to the post office to find out.

I believe the famous Mr_Bo11ox (a) speaks French and (B) is always keen to help shiteists with cross-channel tat missions (even if it's just for the hubcaps). Maybe try a pm to him if you're still having no joy.

'' Bjr. Combien a l'Angletere, svp?

usually gets a response... for me ,anyway.

Any masochists want Mrs Tone's '98 Mondeo 1.8 with loads of test for scrap money? The clutch is slipping, but the V5 is in Durham and the car is rooted on my driveway in Sheffield so it won't be getting weighed in for a week and a bit at the earliest.
