Glass polish.

Basically, I've noticed on the Mondeo when I'm driving in the dark and there are cars driving towards me, their headlights catch little specks on my windscreen. It's not dirt, as they don't wash off.

I don't see them the rest of the time either, it's just oncoming lights that catch them.

Would glass polish help? I've never had this on other cars, and also the Mondeo has a heated windscreen. I've also never used glass polish before so don't know how one applies it, and don't even know where to buy it from / what brands are good.

I may be barking up entirely the wrong tree and the specks on the 'screen could be something else though. Yes, I've cleaned the inside of it too!

I've bought some because there are marks on my rear windscreen from scrapers etc. It is hard work and slow to get rid of them, glass is hard! I may try using a polisher rather than doing it by hand - but what you describe sound like stone chips, my relatively new windscreen already had a fair few and I don't think you'll get rid of them with polish. Like most things, car glass does not seem to be as hardy as it once was. My old screen was absolutely peppered with them, and that was already a replacement for the original. By all means try it, cheap enough off eBay but it will be a slow process, be warned! Rule of thumb is, if you can feel the damage with a fingernail, forget it.

Fully comp insurance & a hole punch gets rid of those...

What has happened to Cavcraft?  Once prolific on the tat thread, nothing for ages.

It wouldn't bother me, there's no level gauge though is there? 30l seems a bit small

The fuel gauge is buggered anyway.  It's got a terrible lash-up of the wrong tank underslung where the proper one should be at present.  After looking at that I found some "inboard" tanks which look better.  As for capacity - I don't tend to go far anyway, but if I was on a long trip, would probably appreciate a break every few miles :)

A colleague has an Alfa GT, I think it's a 1.9JTD but I'm not 100%.

It's making a loud whistling noise when on the throttle and in line with the revs, he's suspicious the turbo is going.

Any ideas what it could be?

A turbo "going" is usually a lot of smoke and/or a grinding noise that will make your bum clench. At a billion rpm even a bit of wobble will make itself known.

Whistling is going to be an air leak somewhere. Get the fairy liquid out!

Question: Do MGB headrests fit Marinas/Allegros/Princesses/Minis/Itals/etc.?

I ask this because there are many MGB headrests around as they were standard fitment and many other BL products just have blanking plates.

Yes, they do.  I've owned Allegros with MGB headrests, sold a Princess with Allegro headrests fitted etc

I'm currently trying to bolt on a brake caliper carrier: the top bolt goes in without issue, but every time I try and do up the bottom one the thread strips clean off the moment it's more than hand tight. I'm currently on my fifth brand new bolt and the issue keeps re-occurring. What am I doing wrong?

The caliper carrier thread itself is fine (I've re-cut it) and the other side assembled without issue so I genuinely can't see why it's happening.

any pics ?    does the bolt go in nice with no caliper there , threads look okay and clean?

i know on my vws you have to give it a slight shove to line up as the anti rattle things put a slight but of pressure on it

Is the top bolt done up tight? Or just in enough to hold the carrier on?

Right, here are some pictures (apologies for quality), it's the bottom bolt in these pictures that's at fault:

The threads are clean as the bolts are new and the carrier thread's been re-tapped. The bolts do go in fine if the carrier isn't attached to the steering knuckle, I'm only having problems when I try and attach them to the car.

I've tied it both ways and the same thing happens.

Could it be some surface rust on the hub pushing the bottom of the carrier out of alignment with the hole in the hub?

Have you tried lining up bottom first and doing top bolt second?

Posted

Just wondering if it is not completely square when retapped, I would put the bottom one in first and then you should see if it is out of line.

I've mitigated against this by taking all contact surfaces back to clean metal.

I have also tried this.

can you bolt it up to the carrier off the car then fit the carrier ?  might be easier to see whats going with it on the bench

So the ABS light is on my Celica. Has been since I bought it. It doesn't seem to have any affect on driving and stopping. But how do I test if the abs works. Do I get to 30 mph and slam on. If wheels don't lock up then all ok. If I wake up with a crowd round me cos if skid, then not good?

What sort of MPG should I expect from a 307 SW 2.0 110 HDi driving 60 miles each day at 60/65mph with the odd trip to the local shops a couple of times a week. I'm getting a measured 45mpg, I thought I would get more than this.

I'm starting to think the DPF is blocked, I get no warning messages but when I read the codes with Peugeot Planet when I was sorting the ABS a while back it said the adblue pump was open circuit. Giving this I'm assuming it hasn't done a regen for a while, it also has quite severe engine braking when you lift off, would this suggest a blocked DPF?

I used to get an average of 44 out of a 406 HDI 90 driven with 150 kilos of test equipment in it and also driven like a company car should be so you are probably right that something is not quite right.

What was the last car not fitted with a heater as standard?

I remember my grandad saying the work vans he had in the fifties didn’t have a heater on the basis the electricity board didn’t want them sat wasting time warming up in the van (he was an electrician with the YEB).

I  know the 1972 Lightweight LR I had didn't have one.

I’ve had cars that didn’t have a working heater so I can imagine what it was like. Just used to wear a thick coat and some gloves.

In a similar vein what was the last car to be sold with drum brakes all round? I had a very early 1983 Suzuki SJ410 that didn't have front discs but not sure of anything newer than that.
