Abs usually clears when driven if faults gone .

Seconded. Most if not all modern ABS systems self test on every drive cycle so if the light is still on you still have a fault. That's why they store fault codes, so you don't have to play parts darts.

^ Thanks all

..but also sod

is 2004 modern ?  come to think of it,  is Chrysler modern ?

Posted

Yeah, that's modern. I meant not the old teves electrohydraulic things with the accumulator like you find on sierras and old mercs.

Parts darts ! I like it .

Get the thing plugged in ffs

That. Even my 1993 Jag when I had it would tell me the faults on the ABS system & it even got them right!

2005 3.0CDTi Signum with autobox (5spd).

It's recently had its EGR valve blanked off to try and deal with some poor running issues. Before it would show the main check engine light as well as the EML (apparently there are two) and tick over rather lumpily and every now and again would lose power which would be very noticeable under heavy load. Turning off/on would reset, which is why the EGR valve was blocked off.

After this it ran like a dream for a short while. Very responsive throttle, and it felt like all 170hp or so was back in the pen.

Today, however, accelerating sharply onto a roundabout no less, it decided to throw the EML light on the right side of the dashboard and the car literally lost as much power as it's possible to lose without it stalling. That was a hairy moment. It became clear the car was in limp home mode and wouldn't go above 2k revs. It took a whole 1km dual carriageway to get up to 50mph and the gearbox seemed to be having difficulty deciding what gear to be in, leaving it in 2nd gear right up to 40mph or so (which would, oddly, take it beyond 2k revs although only in that instance).

We nursed it home and sat with the car in 'park' with the engine on, and it seemed to tickover fine at around 650-700rpm. However, as soon as the brake pedal was pressed down to change into another gear, the revs would leap up to nearer 1000rpm.

It was then left for three hours, and then it was driven again from cold. The EML light remained on and the problem hadn't 'fixed' itself like it did before. The higher revs indicated a richer mixture and this was proved so as, using the tiptronic 'box, the car was coaxed up to 25mph without any accelerator input (in third).

It would seem that blanking the EGR valve hasn't fixed the problem, or maybe it HAS but a new problem has arisen. Either way, it feels like the fuel mixture is borked and the car isn't feeling like it's getting enough, making it run richer. This throws the EML and puts it in limp mode. There is no whooshing or other indications of a split turbo hose. The gearbox behaving weirdly may indicate a borked 'box but it's more likely to be struggling to work with the lack of power now coming through it.

Any ideas apart from bridge-it memes? It's got a fresh MOT and has just been serviced so would be a crime to scrap it, even if it has the boat anchor diesel engine...

Forget the richer / leaner thing -it's a diesel they run lean full stop . Get it plugged in and diagnosed my someone that knows their stuff because "parts darts - copyright scaryoldcortina" is bloody expensive on one of those .

It does sound like the Vgt is sticking tho

I've seen them as part of a bleed tube. I've got a couple & neither of them work as a one way valve.

I used to buy a rubber hose with a one-way valve in, cheap as chips.

Haven't seen any for a year or two but this seems to be the evolved version:

What is the laxative that makes you feel the world is falling out of your ring and you only have about 30secs from first twitch to Vesuvius.

If you are asking then I assume you need to know, please read what I consider to be one of the funniest threads on the tinterweb , Evar !

When does a horn fail the MOT?

To destupidify the question slightly, the S60's horn has gone from nice and punchy to a gnat farting in a cave.

Is it measured on decibles or does it just have to make a noise to pass?

Is it something I should rush to fix because it'll eventually go altogether (and be a definite failure) or can I prevaricate?

Posted

It has to make a noise that the tester considers sufficient for an audible warning. If it sounds like someone trod on a dead duck it might not pass, but at least I'd get a laugh out of it.

I have a car (F163 JGT) that on a previous MOT said:

Advisories:

horn emits slighty poor tone

("Slight poor"? Fucking muso golden ears.)

Go to someone who tests Honda's. It'll probably pass ok. I've yet to hear a stock Honda horn that puts out a decent noise....

try tapping it while someone pressed the button....often restores them to full rage

Is it possible to paint a leather trim part that won't be touched with flexible vinyl spray paint?

Posted

you can get fairly hard wearing leather paint, but if you're going darker you can usually dye it pretty well.

You can normally work this out by remembering that frogs are incapable of using spanners etc correctly, hence their cars fall apart when given a sharp look.

I used to have a mate who did it with everything, keep ya foot down as you flick it on & off for the loudest bangs. He did it less after blowing the rear box apart on a sunny.

I've yet to encounter a Honda that would have the slightest business sounding a horn, being on the receiving end however is quite a different matter.

What is the score on buying a car with no V5? I'm interested in one a dealer has, he retained £100 from the local guy he bought it from to ensure he got it. It is still taxed until April with the previous keeper currently in Switzerland so probably not about to do anything quickly.

wtf? my reply has had a FTP!

i will type it out again then :

as far as i am aware it is impossible to tax a car without the v5/new keepers green slip.

this can lead to a 4/5 week wait for road legality , until the dvla has gone through the motions of writing to the previous owner and issuing your new v5.

new v5 has a fee of £25 i think as well.

if its still taxed i would get a receipt and a discount to cover getting a new v5 - dont forget as soon as it is in your name the tax will be voided

;-)
