The Oldsmobile is now nearing the MOT after much time and work. Lots done. Tyres though. It has four, all with plenty of tread and not cracked or perished. All brands like Nanking etc. All around 10 to 15 years old.

Am happy to take it it for the MOT with these tyres, but will driving it afterwards invite certain death?

Am no racing driver and only expect to do around 1000 miles in the next year on them. Have spent way more on the car than I wanted, so can the tyres wait?

I drove it all the way from London to north Norfolk on those tyres, and I didn't die once.  You'll be fine.

How many PAS pumps have you ever had fail?

One. Unsurprisingly it was a British made one on a Discovery.

Can anyone identify these seats?

They look a lot like mk1 Transit ones?

Fuel tank vent pipes.

Are they an MOT item? The Oldsmobile has two vent pipes running to what I assume is a carbon cannister. They are very crusty. Metal pipes between two rubber pipes. Rubber from tank, then metal, then rubber to cannister thing.

I have a question

what's the current SHITE process for sorting out this new stupid " you can't keep a tax with the car " rubbish , when buying cars from a very long way away ?

what's the current "get you home tax" process ??

You're supposed to go online and tax it straight away...

Or ask the seller nicely not to apply for the refund until you get home

Someone told me they went buy a car , tried to tax it , on the sellers driveway before heading home

And the DVLA told them on the phone that as the DVLA didn't show them as the owner , he couldn't tax it !?

So how can you tax it straight away ??

my brain hurts

You can tax it as a new owner either online, by phone or at a post office.

I would be tempted to ditch the whole system.

When I turned on my vans ignition a few days ago the charge light didn't come on, flickered a little while cranking and since has behaved. It's an alternator, actually from an old Rangy, big fat Lucas one I think. I assume this is the brushes being sticky or on their last legs?

Brake fluid - is worth spending more for a named brand??

Trivia request...

What was the first car sold in the UK with plastic bumpers? 1st Gen Renault 5?

Also, what was the last sold with metal bumpers?

Posted

The original Mini had metal bumpers right up to the end. Land rover defender too maybe?

I would personally say not really, it will be better than the what is in there!

Does anyone bother using a new sump plug washer when doing an oil change? I never have and not had any issues with reusing the old one but they must sell them for a reason.

I get them if I remember and they're cheap like 30c on rockauto but have done many changes reusing the old one and never had an issue. One of those 'good practice but not essential' things I think.

Quick question on sump gaskets, obviously need to scrape off the old one but does it need to be shiny bright steel all the way around? Wet and dry or steel wool a good idea or not? Definitely only want to do it once as had to jack engine off the mounts to get the sump off.

middle seat looks like standard LR Deluxe(fluting and piping and all that jazz; LR standard ordinary was/is plain unadorned vinyl), no idea about the outer two.

No, it's all made to the same strict quality standard so there's not much point.

Depends; is it plain copper, copper crushable or a bonded composite seal? The first can be reused many times if your mingebaggery is strong and you don't lean on it, either as-is or heat to red and allow to cool for a proper job. Crushables; reuse depends on whether it was done up by a gorilla or not, once or twice will probably work but it won't be pretty. Bonded seals; as long as the sealing lips are intact and flexible they'll continue to work.

Is scrap on it's arse at the moment? Want to scrap the CMax (mot fail!) and got offered £40.00. Is that about right or taking the piss?
