A Scully & Mulder moment, may we?

..... my mobile will tell me where I am (GPS Speak), if I ask.

My company has given me their fone... perhaps all of us might have a Company Phone at some time... does it follow that the company can lawfully put s/w on that phone so it tells THEM where it is [ &by extension ME], and is this ethical??

I don't lie to my company and am where I say I am, whenever they might ask  . Just like a human TRAKKER.

Lobster - judging by recent comments on here I think cartakeback? were offering reasonable money for cars and take them away for you as well.

Anyone know where I can get a car radiator rebuilt?

Its a 205 TD one, rare as rocking horse shit. Plastic tanks, copper core, just needs a couple tubes in the core sealing.

Tried K seal already.

www.kempston radiators.com Ignore application list on site and just ring. They also sell/fit cores by size and number of tubes. Rebuilt mine ('47 Rover) with bigger core for £200. Vintage Rads wanted 700

The EGR is leaking on my "new" Astra (1.6 pez).

Does it do anything as the guy my dad took it to said to just blank it off, so new valve or make a plate tomorrow from some random scrap of metal?

I thought Luton bodied extending over the cab were a fairly recent thing, I'm sure I remember them being just a big box up until the late 80s.

I binned the last four cats I had - I've tried before and couldn't be arsed with the bloke at the scrap metal place using a rod to measure the thickness and then offer me £1. Three were genuine Rover/GM and Fiat. I chucked them in the bin, less hassle that dealing with those people.

"Lutons" were so-named from their use in the hat trade (which was big in Luton) and have always been around, any lightweight cargo gave bigger earnings with a bigger body so the name stuck eventually....

I sold the last two on eBay - got around a tenner for them which is OK for saying they were aftermarket jobbies. Obviously that opens you up to a whole other world of pain, but generally I've been lucky with my dealings!

Its one thing some shed-dweller knocking out hokey shite like this but why link it to a perfectly good car in his listing so you have to see the shit when you are  looking for parts?   A child of 5 could see it won't work but otherwise sensible adults still buy the crap and throw it in their tank....

and these people also get to vote in General Elections. no wonder we are f**ked.

Ref cats, I swapped two old BMW ones for a pair of 255/60/17s for my 325 at my local scrappie, and he also fitted them using his well dodgy fitting machine. And they both leaked.

Still, he's a mate, what can you do?

The windscreen of my Transit Connect van has an area of small black dots which would be behind the rear view mirror, if there was one. (No rear window = no rear view mirror) Has anyone tried to remove this patterning from a windscreen, with or without any success? If so how?

I would like to remove it because it spoils the view.

A lot of vehicles now have these obscure areas on the 'screen. What is the point of them?

Anyone got any bright ideas for what to do when your bonnet cable ceases to open the bonnet?

Tried to open up the Sceptre today - was pulling and pulling on the knob and just could not move the cable at all. It's usually pretty hard to shift but I don't think I've got even punier in the last few weeks since I last did it, so something must be wrong...

Get someone to bounce gently on the bonnet while you try. Reduces the load on the catch/ cable . Sometimes that's enough to pop it open.

Does DAB digital radio work well in cars or is the interference and lack of bandwidth make it a bad idea?

The answer I can give you is "sometimes". The factory DAB system in my 998 911 wasn't great at all. The large buildings in central Belfast killed it stone dead.

The little Pure DAB pocket radio that I have plugged into the Aux socket on the Rover's Pioneer car stereo works very nearly anywhere, including on back roads in the arsehole of nowhere.

If you are happy with the awful sound quality of DAB in general, then you'll be happy enough with a car system, they have decently strong tuners nowadays.

I cannot abide by DAB at all though,  it's so compressed it's like listening to internet radio on realplayer, in 1998.

Yes but if I want to listen to 6 Music or Absolute with any quality I don't have a lot of choice.

If I remove the catalytic converter from the Rover of Doom (1998), will this cause it to fail its MoT, or does this only apply to modern DPF Eolys CO2   tax bracket shit?

Posted

Yes

Any car that was supposed to have a cat needs to have a cat otherwise it's MOT fail

Posted

Really? My 1991 Polo came with a cat.... Swapped it for a genuine VAG decat pipe and it passed two MOTs afterwards. It'll be tested at cat limits but a pass is a pass.

Posted

Cars made before 1992 weren't usually fitted with a catalyst, so the emissions tests for pre 92 cars are less strict ... and pre '86 less strict again. ... I think, hopefully one of our resident testers can clarify this, as I'm just going from personal experience.

Posted

1992 was change over date I think because I decatted my j reg 900 with no issues

Posted

For petrols, pre 1992 you don't need a cat. post 1992 you pretty much should have one - I've had a few pass the emissions test without, but it's not usually possible. Last year they changed the test so the tester has to make sure one is actually fitted, but if you have a tame tester they would probably ignore this if you fluke the emissions.

AFAIK diesels are just smoke tested, so as long as you can see behind you when accelerating, you'll be ok. This could be bollocks.

Does anyone have a link to completed auction prices for major car auctions?

Posted

It is straightforward to create a log in for BCA which gives improved searches and prices achieved. Other stuff too......
