They’ve changed the formula of Gun gum lately but the old stuff was shit. You could use Sikaflex. Personally I’d use those self tapping hex screws with a washer round them. Screw them to a box section or wherever is best.

Evening shiters. Vauxhall nowlidge required...

 

Astra H, went into limp home and wouldn’t rev above 1500rpm, anyway RAC recovered it who reckoned it was the accelerator pedal. Got a used one today, fitted it, still doing it, waggled the wiring and it seemed ok running absolutely fine and restarted after going into limp mode several times. It’s running ok now but seems to do this when it’s cold. Not sure on this whether I’ve waggled a wire enough for any break in the loom to be overcome or if it had got hot enough and it was the EGR sticking? It’s had the ECU out and contacts cleaned already with some contact cleaner to no avail. Any ideas?

What were/are the stored codes? Was the accelerator pedal position checked with live data before replacing it? Needs diagnosing properly before any parts changed.

The AA man scanned it and came up with the diagnosis. Going to strip the fuse box off tomorrow, give it a thorough clean on the contact pins, ditto the ECU connectors. Typical with these is it throws up a very vague TPS fault that could be the wiring, the pedal or the Underhood control whatsit. I’ve come in halfway through this job albeit, the connectors have been supposedly cleaned by a garage. How well is anyone’s guess, so I’ll crack on with that tomorrow night. I’m not about to start chucking parts at it until I’ve covered off the basic stuff that costs nothing.

Is it not a MOT fail with it removed? sure I read that somewhere..

My mot man said he'd only fail a car for a missing heat shield if there was a fire risk by it being missing ( ie if all that shit plastic shields under a car were liable to burn because of their closeness to the exhaust etc).

You need the Vauxbox scanning diagnostics, Opcom ?. That will tell you throttle position etc. Works on SAABs as well.

That might be the stage after if cleaning the UEC pins doesn’t work. Supposedly it’s been cleaned before but given it’s a damp time of year damp in the UEC is a possibility I think. The ECU itself is way down in the front bumper on these I think, so probably cleaning the contacts on that is a good move. After that then yes it needs some real time data to dig a bit deeper. That said it ran fine after I waggled the accelerator pedal wiring round a bit, though I’d doubt there’s a break in the wiring at this stage.

Which brings us onto, what are they worth?

 

The SAAB alloys, there's a dreamer on eBay asking £750.

 

Any ideas?

Was gonna say check the uec on the Astra for water and / or corrosion

Cleaned the UEC out, there was a tiny bit of moisture in there, cleaned it up with some contact cleaner, tested the voltage at the connector to the pedal and it showed 5v on the top 2 feeds as it’s supposed to so I can only assume it’s the actual pedal that’s fucked, so waiting on a replacement coming. But everywhere you read it says replacing the pedal never seems to work. All voxalls are shit.

Thanks for the input on pits, the mechmate GRP one, or a slightly fancier dual-level one with a seat on runners would be brilliant. Obviously a 2 port lift would be better, but that'll require a two storey (or at least V tall single storey) garage to accomodate, and I'd have the fear that the car would tip off or something, whereas the pit appeals because the car can't fall any further if its on the garage floor.

Knew a lad who put an old victorian iron tub in his leanto floor. Was just a soil floor/not a slab.

 

Was short, but deep, so needed the car to be moved about a bit to get in/out :/

Mondeo estate (mk3) rear calipers...

 

They have a reputation for being short lived. Mine is dragging on at least the rear left at least so seems likely they need to be replaced, which is handy as currently I’m more skint than I have been in a very long time.

 

Euro car parts want £150 a side, whereas fleabay wants 70quid a pair.

 

I wouldn’t normally entertain it, but it’s a big old price difference.

 

Can they be that bad? Mondeo Calipers are not high tech after all...

My oppo at work fitted a pair of eBay ones on his Mondeo (think it’s a mk3), one didn’t make a month and seller wasn’t interested in returns etc. I wouldn’t skimp on brakes personally. Look at carparts4you which is ECP online only or wait a day of two for a 30% off code.

Do I really need to remove the radiator to allow room for the inlet manifold to come off? Really. Fucking Haynes book of lies is shit.

The ECP ones will be Pagid ones on an exchange. I’ve used the EBay special ones before, you can tell them as the end of the piston is slightly different. The plating on the piston won’t last quite as long but Mk3 Mondeos aren’t worth a great deal now so I’d stick the cheapies on. Sometimes you can get recon ones as well which would be better. Be aware that the estate and hatch/saloon callipers are different. Could always chance £20 on one from the breakers if it’s not been in long. HTH

A friend has a Pug 307 Hdi CC of about 2007 flavour and the brake pedal occasionally goes very hard with poor braking. Going from the description I assume lack of servo, has anyone had any experience of similar on Peugeots? Vacuum pump?I haven't seen the car yet so am relying on Chinese whispers for fault description.

It was the Saab I had but I had that occasionally when the hard plastic pipe to the servo gained a crack in it, just where it plugged into the vacuum pump.
