When I asked my tame MOT tester about a similar thing I was informed that I would need a cat for my 1992 Alfa, as it had one from the factory … Even though they weren't a requirement until 1994, if it had one from the factory it should still be there.

 

Can any of the testers on here confirm this is true?

 

does that rely on them having encyclopedic knowledge of how every car and variant left the factory ?

 

my 91 car had a cat and somehow its gone missing , nothing ever been said sinse 1999 when i got it....sometimes they point at the small can where the o2 sensor is and think its a cat lol

91/92 is the cut off for the cat test iirc. There were a few crossover grey areas such as mpi minis , kit cars and Suzuki’s I think

Where do people in other countries think Fords come from?

The ones I've owned were probably all made in Ghent or Valencia, yet I don't really think of them as foreign cars. Perversely, a Sunderland-built Micra would be.

I believe cats were mandatory on petrols from 1993 model year onwards (K reg on), but I may be wrong. I think it's related to the date the chassis number was assigned to the car rather than the registration date for added confusion. Or something.

It's always passed the emissions sans cat. So did the 45 in fact.

These old 90s designed diesels don't have a catalytic converter, it's more of a primitive particulate filter.

They can pass emissions tests without it fitted but still emit harmful particulates.

It might be at the tester's discretion to pass it if the particulate filter is clearly removed but I imagine a lot are playing it safe.

It's hard to find any information about the post 1995ish diesels fitted with particulate filters so I guess they're treated like any other diesels with particulate filters.

It always grinds my gears when lazy hacks refer to Fords from Dagenham and Vauxhalls from Luton.

I still hear Capris being referred to as Dagenham dustbins, or ‘the best budget British sports coupe’ or whatever, despite the fact that Germany is their home really.

A Frenchman has a tendency to think everything is French.

 

 

As far as I can make out, most of our Continental cousins seem to think of Ford as German.

Yep, Ford had been based in Cologne since long before WW2 and became the European headquarters of Ford Motor Company in the 1960s.

Well it's at least 23 years old, because if it was newer than that it'd say Mumbai rather than Bombay.

Anybody know anything about Army regiments

Bini 1.6 pezzer. Rough idle, stalling, and rough at speed once warmed up. I'm getting O2 sensor and thermostat codes.

 

I can't find an intake leak.

 

Do I rely on the codes and just change the O2 sensor? They're said to last ~100k, and it's done 93. Or is there something else, preferably cheap, that I should be trying first?

 

I'm not convinced fault codes make anything easier.

Look at live data on the O2 sensor.

I'd try it on EE :D

What year ? Early bini O2 sensors are service items .

Later prince ones can suffer with high pressure fuel pumps causing 02 issues

It went when Stanky and Slartibartfast took over the hosting from daveb47 and has been replaced by a monthly appeal that Stanky posts as a topic on the main board.

Business fuel cards - does anybody have one? Currently going through 200-300l of LPG a week, none of the websites say anything about gas

In front of myself here, but I see a problem.

Have a 75 on Classic insurance, 3000 miles a year, must have use of another car.

My other car, wife's motability, will be going back.

Thus I have no 'other car' and 3000 miles will not be sufficient,

I'm answering my own question here, but obviously I need to contact my insurer, and expect my premium to rise from £200 to £1000+ as I have no NCB.

There is a possibility I can get some sort of NCB entitlement from the Motability insurers, we will see.

I do have a bus pass, my next door neighbour has kindly explained what I do with it, as I've not been on a bus for 30 years.

If you have access to any other vehicle at all, insured on your son's for example, then that would technically meet the requirement.

The insurance company should give a no claims entitlement for years of use, they did for Marianne after just being named.

I found myself in this situation after about 15 years of cars on classic policies then insuring one a mere 17 years old. I phoned a few brokers and found a couple who contacted insurers explaining my situation. In the end I had to sign a declaration stating that I had not had any accidents/ claims in the last ten years and giving permission for them to access the insurers database to confirm this (no idea why as I thought they could do that anyway). They then ‘mirrored’ no claims discount whilst I built it up in the more traditional way. After three years of that I found a company who were just happy to give me max discount.

I am insured on my sons Tranny Van.

Am sure they said had to live at the same address though, and not sure they will take a van, but worth an ask.

Here's one for the assembled crowd..

 

At motorway speeds (60mph+), the steering on the Merc feels a bit 'vague and twitchy'

 

No obvious thinks/bangs etc from balljoints, could it be the steering box needing adjusted?
