There's a drop down bar below the title input which is labeled as "tag". At least it was there the last time I checked.

Spot on, muchas gracias.

Bit of a long shot, but does anyone know anything about Rover 75 (and / or BMW E46) sat nav setups? I'm trying to fit one to my 75 - it looks like this:

post-190-0-38027000-1536446644_thumb.jpg

(It's not fully in the dash yet as it needs the mounting brackets modifying).

I plugged it in but it won't power up. I've tried swapping the other bits around with the BMW units (apart from the tuner box which isn't the same as the Rover one) but can't get any joy out of it.

I've checked the fuses which look like they could be stereo related and they're all fine. I tried a multimeter on the multiplugs that plug into the dash unit and there didn't appear to be any power getting to them, although I'm not 100% on that as I'm not sure my multimeter probe was getting far enough into the plug to hit the contacts.

I did however find a multiplug inside the dash which wasn't plugged into anything - it's only a 10 pin plug rather than the 12 pin job that plugs into the stereo, but the colours of the wires are suspiciously similar.

Only problem is I can't find anywhere under the dash for it to plug into.

Like I say, appreciate this is a long shot, but I can't find anything online about how these things are wired, not even on the Rover / BMW forums, so I'm kinda hoping somebody on here will be able to point me in the right direction...

OK, I have 2 questions -

1) Anyone have experience changing an engine in a RWD car with conventional auto (torque converter) transmisson? Mainly I am interested in not having an Exon Valdez type scenario on my driveway and I vaguely recall something about torque converters being full of transmission fluid that you can't drain. Or something. Google hasn't been my friend so far.

2) I have been considering for a while getting hold of one of those old Crypton tuners for my shite. Anyone had one/used one? There seems to be only one Youthtube vid of one in use.

Torque converters will have autobox fluid in them but you can pull the engine without causing environmental armageddon. There'll be an inspection plate at the bottom and front end of the bell housing. Remove it then you'll see the converter. Spin it using a bar on the ring gear and remove each bolt that comes into view. When all the bolts are out you can remove the engine as normal.

I've had my Colour Tune for donkeys and it's useful when I need it. They do work.

Wuvum - depends on the car. If a high line system (tuner in the boot) was fitted, you need to delve down behind the ashtray etc and unplug the iso connector (but it sounds like you might have done this.

The high line stuff is very like BMW e46 as the “head unit” isn’t- it’s just a screen and casette deck with the unit in the boot

Posted

The wiring for speakers etc goes all the way past the “head unit” and plugs in in the boot - but there is an iso plug and socket behind the dash the cheaper models so you can unplug that and use it for front mounted (conventional) stereo head units.

On really early cars it’s a BMW plug/socket instead of iso but I have never seen one

What does FYFY mean? Wuvvum always says it....is there an abbreviation page there are freaking loads I can’t make sense of??

Check out the autoshite lexicon page. Linked in read this first post

Btw not 100% but I think that other multiplug is for the cd changer

That'd make sense - that's where the changer would be located isn't it?

It is a high line system with the tuner under the boot floor.  There is an ISO plug behind the dash as well, but to use a conventional stereo I'd have to run an aerial extension from the boot - not a major issue and the cables are only about a fiver off eBay, but having spent a load of money on the nav system it'd be nice to be able to get it working...

When I had one of those replacement head units there was a fuse in the unit itself - from memory it was hidden under the big multiplug that goes into the unit. Another couple of thoughts - could the acc/ign be reversed? Shouldn’t cause an issue but I recall VAG and Vauxhall (I think) having them the other way around from other cars.

How about trying another head unit? That’d prove if it was the head unit you have or the wiring?

Posted

Btw I had the same issue with the aerial extension although since the unit was already in the car someone had already done mine.

Ok looks like a BM unit. In which case you need to leave the ISO plugs alone. There should be two much smaller plugs one white and one blue that connect to the rear of the BMW unit. In order to power up the unit in the boot you need to plug the ISO plug back into the wiring loom behind the ashtray and connect the blue and white plugs to the “head unit”

Had a similar looking one in a Beemer and the plug just fitted in the back and all was good. I don’t remember a great deal but pretty sure the plug completely filled the hole for it. It did do weird stuff for a while though and turned itself on and off randomly but then settled down and was fine.

Is this tyre fucked?  Front tyres from my Mini are both like this, but only on the inside.  They're date stamped 2015 and made in England.  7 year-old Chinese tyres on the back are fine...

Has the car been stood up a while? I would carry on using

It has, only covered 150 miles last year.

If it still holds air and no cords start showing, it should be fine. You might get an advisory at the next MoT. Just check the rest of the tyre for damage from being rested and if the cracks start eating bigger then bin it.

Yup it's a BMW unit. The blue & white plugs are present and correct and plug straight into the unit.

The two ISO plugs are also there

However upon closer examination these are in fact part of what appears to be an after market adaptor, which plugs into this:

So should there be an equivalent male plug behind the dash for the one above to plug into? I couldn't immediately see one behind there.

Can anyone identify the burnt out component on this circuit board? And what are the chances of replacing it for somone who can twist and solder wires reasonably competently.

Thanks to the helpful replies on this I ordered a capacitor of the right spec (2.2uF) and managed to solder it on with a ludicrously oversized tip (fnarr).

Fitted to the oven and it started right up so instead of $100 for a new board it was 98 cents for the capacitor.  Will have to see how long it lasts...

Yep, that big plug is a BMW one - there will be a socket buried behind the ashtray - you may need to take out the climate panel and the ashtray to get at it.

This is the only pic I can find on t'internet - obviously yours won't have anything plugged into it

I know it sounds weird, but that's hewn from granite German engineering for you - once you plug that BMW plug into the socket behind the ashtray, it will supply power to the box in the boot and that will energise the blue and white connectors and the screen should power up.  One thing the more beardy 75 folk have established is that if you have a cassette deck under that screen it's plug n play - but apparently the single CD player version doesn't work with the original Rover/BMW box in the boot.

Is this possible with the use of a wire from my phone to the tv? And if so which wire?

So I have an iphone 5. I also have two standard lcd tele’s. Neither of these are smart tv’s. How would I go about getting youtube from my phone to play on the tv?

Thanks,

James

I don't think that's possible, you need a TV box (basically an Android device with YouTube and various streaming apps) that plugs into the HDMI port.

This claims to do what you (I think) want - but I have not personally tested it

As mentioned on my Jaguar X300 thread, my OSR ABS sensor is not working, and a new one is 200 quid. The wire runs loose over the rear suspension and so gets a regular bumping, which obviously makes them prone to failure. I will cough up the £200 if I have to as I'm pretty sure that's all the car needs to pass its MOT (other than an exhaust section which ought to be being delivered this week), but I figure I might as well have a go at bodging a new wire in to potentially save myself approx £195.

The wire is question is a coaxial one with a stranded core; the core's reasonably thick, maybe 1.5-2mm, and doesn't seem to be made of copper; the shielding is also silver in colour and quite a dense weave, not like a cheapo TV coaxial cable. The dielectric is quite thin, so the overall diameter of the cable's only 5mm or so. Anyone know what cable I should be trying to buy and where to get approx 2m of it for a reasonable price?

Excellent, cheers for that - I'll have a crack at it next weekend.  Looks like the climate panel will need to come out to get the ashtray out anyway, it won't slide out in the "normal" manner as it hits the centre console.
