Anyone got a decent city runabout for about £1k?

For my SIL so she wants fiat 500, Mini or Polo but I am sure I can convince her of others.

I have tried Wuvuums wee beastie but that was rejected as ugly.

Sell her something of yours, then replace it with a Clio 172.

Wanted.

Some sort of old 2 stroke 50cc moped.

The more obscure the better.

Prefer something old and French if possible.

Who was it that was bringing them back in estate cars from France?

Wanted.

2nd generation Kia Magentis nearside wing mirror in black (and ideally a new pair of specs) for my amusing giffer neighbour who sees every part of his car except the driver's door as a proximity sensor.

Does any one have a MIG welder up for grabs? I need one as welding quotes are miles more than I thought/remember. I've never used one before. I have only 13amp spur into the garage, so can't be mahoosive. Prefer gas as advice I've been given says they're better. Any advice?

Gas are better, but you need a big bottle.

Sic is the man to ask, he's resident expert with zero training, but he paid a fortune for his.

Where are you based?

Posted

It depends on how much welding you intend to do, whether or not you need a big bottle. I have done quite a bit of welding to my 190 and some on my sons Punto with two of the small bottles from  Machine Mart.

Big bottles or a lot more cost effective, but Im very limited on spce and dont weld very often, so the little bottles suit me.

I have a Clark 135T MIG and find it a uperb machine, especially for beginners like me. It runs off a 13 amp plug from my shed.

I would happily recommend it to anyone who wants to start welding.

I'm only on my second disposable gas bottle welding my Mercedes.

If you buy the argon/argon mix bottles they last about 2 minutes of welding, the co2 bottles last a fair while.

Posted

Big bottles aren’t stupidly expensive though, mine has been going about five years now and has done two minis, a Capri and various bits and bobs on others and has about 10-15% left at a guess. Refills are cheap enough. When using disposables I would burn through one in a morning easily.

I would normally use a big bottle but the Mercedes needs me to be inside welding for half an hour then back outside again for a bit then rinse and repeat so it has to be very portable at the moment. I can get a fair amount of time out of them, enough to make it worthwhile for what I'm doing at the moment. As I say, I tried the argon/ argon mix and they didn't last a morning either but the pure co2 seem to last long enough.

For all the body stuff I'm doing I'm only using a little Clarke 90 and the whole thing can be lifted with one hand and moved where it needs to be.

I leave my bottle on the floor by the side and use a long tube, I have the Clarke 150 turbo (or is it 152?) and it’s not the most stable with the big cylinder on.

I'm near Manchester. Thanks for all the advice. I'm just reluctant to buy a new one when I don't really know what I'm looking for. I bought an old Wolf weld one a few years ago, but it I struggled with it. I gave it to couple of mates who knew more about them and they confirmed that it was indeed shit.Id rather not make the same mistake again. Are the Machine Matt ones many good?

Posted

Leave it with me. I've got a lot on but I'll try and look in the garage tomorrow.

It may not be there though, and I've never used it. But if it is I'll give it a whizz and see. I do give cash refunds if it's shit.

You are right to be wary of used ones though, some are crap to start with, many others have worn pulleys and/or liners.

Machine mart are good enough for the job and smaller ones a reasonable price.

Ive had my 135te for around 12 years now and it has had some hammer in that time, I really can't fault it.

Posted

The clarke ones are pretty good. Mine has had more hammer than a blind cobblers thumb.

Right I've found it.

Unfortunately it's an SIP Migmate150, which are not the best.

It's got a tiny, empty bottle and no wire.

The spool turns, but it's too much faff for me to see if it works correctly although I'm sure* it will.

Wife's ill and every time I go out the phone rings and wakes her up.

Also it stands me at £50, someone gave it to me that owed me that amount.

So, I wouldn't recommend it at all, but if you are brave and live close to OL15 you can take it for £50 and if it fails to impress bring it back within 3 months for your money back.

Or weld the car for free if you are quick :)

You sir, are a gent! If you've gone to the trouble of digging it out, it would be rude of me not to relieve you of this box of sparkly, spangly magic.

Would it be O.K. to come on Monday?
