What makes you grin? Antidote to grumpy thread

This weekend has been ace, loads of sun and t-shirt warm (provided you are busy) for the first time in forever. Managed to score 4 good mowers with the all-important matching grassboxes for a fiver each at the tip yesterday, got two of them running today using spares I already had, and put up for sale today. If the weather stays nice like this for a couple of days these will be gone almost straight away and the funds raised can pay the water bills which landed on friday.

The other two mowers have been stripped down as the engines were knackered and are now ready to accept new engines as soon as I find something with a crusty deck but good engine - so 50% of the work is done with these too.

If I can shift all 4 of these for close to what I'll advertise them for I'll have made almost a grand from tinkering with mowers since last September, and its hugely satisfying bringing something someone else has chucked away back to life, usually with relatively moderate effort.

Off to the beach now for a run about.

My water bill arrived yesterday as well. I was pleased to see that despite using my new hose to wash the cars several times, my bill has only gone up by about a fiver. So fuck you Rumanian, Polish, Lithuanian, Bulgarian car wash buggers that do a shit job and charge me at least a tenner a time - I am quids in!  :)

It was nice weather so I dug up the flower boxes outside my house as they were all full of grass. Then I took the 1850's battery out to charge it so I can at least move it around the drive on the starter.

I also took some photos of it, use a Photoshop filter made AMAZING* 70S STYLE ARTWORK* that ANYBODY* would be PROUD* to hang on their wall.

We (i.e my missus) got our dog on looks, but with research as well. Haven't looked back to be fair, he's not always as housetrained as he should be, but he's non-moulting (good for my asthma) soft as a brush and brilliant company. 99% of other Bichon Frise owners we've met are smitten with theirs too, they do seem a great breed to own.

Anyhow, today for the first time in a very long time, I've been for a decent walk, about 10-12 miles I think across country. I've been bird counting by the Mersey estuary (as a complete novice) and saw birds I'd never even heard of such is my ignorance of these creatures. I've got cramp now and am absolutely knackered but it was brilliant and we had to get a small ferry across the ship canal. Saw work from the other side too, which made a pleasant change.

I can only endorse the theory that most people who show dogs appear to do so because they are pretty hideous themselves.

I despise the inbreeding and history of avoidable health problems that result as much as anyone.  It's good that the trend is moving away from this now; our cocker was bred for health (and we would never show him anyway, that's not our thing at all).  I was at Crufts partly out of curiosity, partly because the trip was a gift for a friend who's always wanted to go and partly for the agility stuff, which is great.

I've never been there before either the reason I got mrs fp tickets was for the agility, flyball, heel work to music and displays from the raf and police, we are avid fans of working and pastoral dogs

I was disappointed and disgusted that the "best in breed" for the gsd was a dog that ticked every box for a deformed freak when most of the Gsd's there were healthy straighter backed dogs and we're excellent examples of the breed, the dog that won Couldnt even move properly due to its rear end it really breaks my heart to see, the runner up was a bit better but still had a pronounced slope, the judge needs to retire in my opinion if they are letting dogs like this win they shouldn't be placing let alone win,I'm so glad I didn't watch the judging of the gsd I only saw them in the preparation area, saw the result on tv, one reprieve was I have not long put on crufts as I wanted to see the final of flyball and there was a section saying they were disgusted at the health of the gsd that won etc and that it shouldnt of won.

Spring has well and truly sprung across North Yorkshire... I popped over to York this afternoon to collect a (bargainous Ebay win) king-size bed in the Pleasure Wagon. Harrogate looks well with its crocuses in full bloom, bathed in hazy sunshine, and all sorts of notable chod is crawling out of the woodwork. These are the ones from memory I saw from the driving seat during my three hours on the road:

Classic 900's, one black, one white

Karman Ghia with non-matching hard-top and yellow VX220 (same drive-way)

Lowered 760 estate

Red Renner 4 on full hoon (29mph on Harrogate's twisty streets)

Ariel Atom (twice)

Megane "Classic" Saloon in filthy doom blue with two flat tyres

A smart, dark red Laguna-II, moving under its own steam

Yellow TR7, top down

90's Skyline

Jag Mk2

Jag XJ6 S2 in that maroon

Asia Rocsta

Boggo black mk2 Golf (minging)

Turquoise lowered mk2 Golf (scened)

Stretched six-door Omega

White 70's Yankee hearse thing, and

Matching limo

MR2's a-plenty

Little Tykes Cosy Coupe

And a Korean mini-SUV thing, whose DRL's made it look like a bloody warthog.

TL;DR: Loadsa tat coming out of hibernation now spring is here.

I had some pidgeon (wrapped in bacon and covered in onion gravy, top tip) a few years back and picked loads of shot out of it with my teeth.

On my walk today:

This is a listed building, I'm very reliably informed. Explosives building from when the Manchester ship canal was built...

Random shed, sadly not especially nice inside as contained remnants of long since since dead sheep

Naturally, because I went bird counting/watching not a single sodding picture of any actual birds came out well enough to even look remotely good.

I presume it committed suicide by flying into the path of flying shot! Pot roasted over onions and carrot, with sauce made from chicken stock. Not bad for£2.50, And leftovers for tomorrow!

I utterly adore dogs (as you may have gathered) but I cannot watch Crufts or indeed, go to any fog show. I despise with a passion breeders if the poor little buggers that are destined to live in pain or discomfort for an unacceptably short amount of time. I am not even that keen on people who buy pedigree dogs, certainly not over bred ones.

Chester is a proper mutt while Phoebe was 'bred' and he is as strong as an ox (touch wood he stays that way) while poor old Phoebe is utterly fucked and has been a sickly dog since she was a pup.

All my dogs over the years have been mutts from the rescue centres ( I volunteered in one when I was young) and they have all been strong and long lived. I love Labs and Retrievers but they have huge problems - a mate has just lost his at a year old due to be badly bred - he is fucking heart broken,

Chester was actually bought (much to my disgust - £150 for a mutt!) but only because the rescue centres would not let us have a dog due to having kids and cats! I was so annoyed, I stopped sponsorship and now sponsor 'Sidney' at the dogs trust because he will never have a home (scared of people, just like Phoebe).

If you look at the 'breed standard' from the 19th century, you will be amazed at what the various breeds were supposed to look like. They have become a caricature of themselves.

Old age insurance capparis spinosa

Went through some compare the car insurance the went to SAGA with some small print about beating any quote for over 50s so quoted them the cheapest quote which they then beat by a pound. Now renewal time and the Post Office have

"...... guaranteed to beat £50 offer for Over 50's Car Customers.............This offer applies to new Post Office® Car Insurance customers only, purchasing a Car Insurance policy and who are 50 years of age or over at the time of the purchase of the policy....."

It all looks fine, one drawback is having to pay then getting the difference back later if I qualify so I cannot get a quote from them then go back to SAGA and get it even cheaper.

It'll be £96.99 unless I bugger it all up.

Just completed the most hassle free car sale of my evah.

Put Mrs Spud's Panda on Bumtree at the weekend for £1000 - as an afterthought bunged it on my Facebook page as well to see if anyone wanted a nice little car. An acquaintance from some years ago was straight on it, anyway I picked him up from Corby station this evening, he gave it a once over and left us Pandaless but 950 notes richer. Sorted!! Anyone got a volvo estate for sale??

Managed to purchase luxury car mats from home bargains -£3.99 for a full set.

Surely the pinnacle of mankind has been reached when we can buy that kind of luxury for such a low low price

Hmmm, I "liked" the comment, but I'm not sure... they're not tailored ones are they? 'Universal' (yuk) ones?

Sadly you did run through my mind when I purchased them! Tbh they will do for now. But can't get over how cheap they were.
