What makes you grin? Antidote to grumpy thread

I wouldn't worry about standing too near flames, quite a lot of fast fashion garments contain more plastic than cloth anyway, and most of us survived the shellsuits of the 80s and 90s without getting too badly incinerated.  Pat'll be fine, he stopped smoking earlier this year so he's low risk for spontaneous human combustion these days.

Left work and walk over to the harpenden classics on the common.  Meet up with my work friends who are running a stall there.

I leave them to go hunting for interesting cars, hard in this show as alot of willy wavers pay extra to put a mondern high performance car on display.

I find  One stall there selling used parts, i spy a chrome bumper a black bumper and a steering rack.  Bumper looked allegro ish, so did the rack. Asked the chap and he confirmed its aggy parts.

20 quid if you want all three parts mate

I decline the black bumper and leave with the rack and chrome bumper for 15 quid.  Absolute bargain and he seemed glad they were going.

I bought one of those electric oil pumps. Within 30 seconds of hooking it on the battery it started pumping, went a bit grumbly, seized up and then went on fire. Unless you spend a fortune they're very poor!

I once laid some slate slabs for my brother-in-law. All the ones around the edge needed cutting, and with about 6 slabs to go my old Chinese grinder expired. Brainwave! My late father in-law had bought a new Blackspur grinder and it had never even been switched on. It lasted 1½ slabs before catching fire.

Chinese stuff can be surprisingly good, also surprisingly appalling.

Washer decided to expire earlier this morning. Horrific burning smell and suspiciously warm drum. Obviously not the grin.

Two week old listing on Gumtree with the generic title of "Beko washing machine" at £80. Got it for £75. Looked like a fairly newish model on the potato cam photo.

Few months old at most, same model selling on AO for £430. Bargain! Too snazzy for me though. A washer does not need Bluetooth or a light in the drum!

After slowing sometimes to a full stop, the flasher relay on the Elantra decided to release the smoke today and pack it in. The grin is I kept the one in the old Elantra when it went to the rusty plains, and managed to restore blinking yellow lights in about a half an hour. Hoarding is sometimes good!

I went to get some trousers from TK Maxx, I need them at shorter notice than I can make a new pair so needs must.  Anyway, spotted this incredible 100% rayon shirt on a neighbouring rack and ended up coming home with it too.  Not for me this one, it's for Pat, and fortunately it both fits him and he loves it.

TK Maxx sometimes has some proper gems for not a lot.  Earlier this year they had magenta velvet blazers with brocade interiors and I wanted one SO BAD but they were all both not my size and not my budget.

Nice shirt. One of those mushrooms looks more magical than the others.

Been having a pretty rough week mentally so I drove the Austin to the sea and watched the waves for a few hours, definitely gave me a much needed grin

My eyes paused on the word 'mentally', to check I'd read it right, and my brain then assimilated 'so I drove the Austin into the sea'. So glad that's not the case, and it helped lift your spirits.

Big grin for me. My house has one of these. Bollox! It's Australian.

I love the coast, wouldn't live anywhere else. It will also give you a lift.

Agreed 100%.

I’m within a couple of miles of 3 beaches. It was a godsend during the early lockdowns.

But in the U.K. we’re still in a mixed situation.

Motoring is especially mad. We still say it’s x miles to somewhere, our cars do 100 mph and 50 mpg ( not at the same time unfortunately), but the car has a 2 litre engine and we buy petrol by the litre. Tyres are 205 mm wide but fit 17 inch wheels and are inflated to 30 psi. All road signs are Imperial too apart from weight limits (tonnes) and height limits are normally shown in feet and metres.

We buy draught beer in pints but 500 ml bottles and milk is sold in litres as well. Soft drinks are sold in litres too.

Food is sold in kg but you’ll still hear people ask the butcher for a pound of mince. Eggs are sold by the dozen although you can get packs of 10.

Drug dealers seem to be metric though I’d guess that’s more to do with the gram being a convenient unit rather than anything else.

Most people can tell you their height in feet and inches and their weight in stones but not in metres and kg, and most men will claim 6 inches rather 15cm.

Land is still measured by the acre as well as hectare.

Energy is sold by kWH but you’ll still see therms mentioned on your gas bill.

Humans race over metres apart from the marathon,( and hurdle heights are in feet and inches) but horses still use furlongs. Rugby pitches are measured in metres but football and cricket in yards. ( the length of a cricket pitch is actually 1 chain).

Oh and we still have back yards, New Scotland Yard and Yardies.

What about the absurdity that is tyre sizing . A metric width , aspect ratio as a percentage but a rim measurement in inches .

I do find all of it bizzare myself….

Even us in metric lands have theses.

Cycle components are still made and measured in imperial.

Brake pads are sold in thirds of a dozen!

After months of kicking stuff about in my head, I think I've found the idea that'll make me £lotsamoney.

Or at least give me the opportunity to spend investors money trying!

I read once that it if it weren't for drugs americans would have no concept of the metric system at all.

Guns also.

I have one that takes 0.357" rounds and one that takes 9.00mm rounds.

Somehow this isn't confusing to most.

Considering the size of the gun industry in the USA, it’s not surprising inches are still used there.
I used to work in electronics where the USA is obviously a big player. They measured everything in 1/1000 in (thou) , while Europe and Asia was mm or microns.

You soon get used to doing the conversions in your head.
